Madden Charges From 10th for SAS Win At Cleveland Speedway

by Richard Allen
CLEVELAND, Tenn. (August 20) - Chris Madden may not have had the start to his night that he wanted in the Southern All Stars race at the Cleveland Speedway on Saturday night but he certainly had the finish he aimed for. After a somewhat lackluster qualifying effort that placed him 10th on the starting grid, the Gray Court, South Carolina driver charged forward right from the beginning of the 50 lap Jean Johnson Memorial feature event to take the lead by just after the halfway point.

Skip Arp of Georgetown, Tennessee earned the pole position over an impressive field of 32 cars by posting a lap of 13.927 seconds around the 3/8 mile clay oval. The SAS locks in the top-10 starting positions through time trials so joining Arp in that privileged group were series points leader William Thomas, Johnny Chastain, Billy Ogle, Jr., Chris Ferguson, Ronny Lee Hollingsworth, Brian Reese, Dusty Carver, Mike Marlar and Madden.

Tommy Kerr of Maryville, Tennessee and Mike Hill of Rockwood, Tennessee won the two consolation races that set the rest of the field.

Once the main event began Madden’s charge started immediately. The driver of the familiar Bloomquist Race Car, which recently sat in victory lane on this same track in July’s Southern Nationals race, was able to maneuver his familiar #44 lower than most of his competitors which allowed him to get around the other top-10 drivers, especially as the front runners negotiated lapped traffic.

Just after the field saw the indication for the halfway mark of the race Madden moved around Arp for the race lead. From that point he would not be challenged in a race that ran its full distance caution free.

“We had an awesome race car tonight,” Madden said in his post-race interview. “I kind of screwed myself qualifying and missed my line but we worked on this thing and got it ready for the feature and had an awesome race car tonight.”

Billy Ogle, Jr. eventually worked his way around Arp as those two drivers would finish 2nd and 3rd respectively. Fourth went to Thomas followed by Chastain, Ferguson, Hollingsworth, David Payne, Todd Morrow, Marlar and Reese.

In a rare showing at the track for Ronnie Johnson the Hall of Fame driver finished 12th overall after starting from the 16th spot. The ‘Chattanooga Flash’ had not raced at the Cleveland Speedway for years until this season in which he has made at least three appearances there.
