Track Champions score final wins of the season at Independence

by Christine Rublack
Independence, Iowa (August 27) – With the track champions being crowned the full grandstands witnessed some great season-ending racing action at Independence Motor Speedway.

Tyler Droste added to the show by taking the challenge to start in the rear of the IMCA SportMod’s. By virtue of starting the feature Droste had locked up his first track championship. Danny Dvorak took the lead early as yellows plagued the first few laps. Matthew McCahen moved into second as Jim Buhlman closed in. By lap five Droste had made his way into the top five and looked to be on a hard charge to the front. Droste began to work under Dave Schulze for fourth as Dvorak began to pull away. Droste found himself in second prior the halfway point as he chased down Dvorak. The top two was advancing from the field as Droste looked to the inside of Dvorak. The crowd stood up as Droste exited the corner and took over the lead with 5 to go. Droste pulled away from Dvorak as Buhlman began to challenge for the second position. Droste scored the victory, Buhlman, Dvorak and Schulze followed.

Jon Passick scored the IMCA Late Model victory along with the track championship. Greg Kastli and Tyler Bruening decided to take the challenge and start from the rear of the field. Darren Ackerman took to the lead early but not for long as Passick shot under and into the top spot. Dain Sires moved into third as Travis Smock and Dale Hackwell Jr. were side-by-side for fourth. A yellow bunched the field and upon the restart Smock moved into second with Dean Wagner moving into fourth. Passick had distanced himself from the field as Hackwell hugged the bottom and found himself in third. Passick had worked into lapped traffic as Hackwell began to close in on Smock. Just passed the halfway point Hackwell worked to the inside of Smock and into second. Passick got the one thing he didn’t need a caution allowing Hackwell and Smock to be on his rear bumper. Curt Martin made use of the restart as he shot low and into second as another caution occurred. Wagner worked around Smock and into fourth as the top four checked out from the rest of the field. Passick took the checkers first, Martin, Hackwell and Wagner followed.

It was a good night to be a Johnson as Adam and Sean both scored the track championships and feature wins in their respective divisions. Adam took command early in the IMCA Modifieds as Troy Cordes quickly moved into second. Jerry Luloff moved into third as Darin Duffy made it’s a three wide battle as he moved into fourth. The halfway point was reached as Johnson checked out from Cordes and Luloff. The field went under caution as Cordes and Luloff now had a chance to strike. Johnson took off as Duffy moved to third and Luloff second. Johnson pulled away as he moved into lapped traffic. Duffy went around Luloff and into second as the laps wound down. Johnson scored the victory, Duffy, Luloff and Cordes rounded out the top four.

Sean Johnson also scored the victory and the track championship in the IMCA Stock Cars. Johnson took off early in the event as Jarod Weepie moved into second. Dave Stricker and Norman Chesmore were running third and fourth as the top four extended their lead. The field went single file until Stricker worked to the inside of Weepie and into second. Johnson’s lead increased as the halfway point was reached. Weepie began to close in on Stricker and made his move back into second. Johnson scored the win, Weepie, Stricker and Roger Ciesielski followed.

Vince Buchholz also doubled his night taking the championship and the IMCA Hobby Stock victory. Rod Grother shot under Buchholz at the start but it didn’t take long for Buchholz to take back over the lead. The top two were in a side-by-side battle for the lead. Grother kept looking into the inside of Buchholz as Steve and Chris Wiltse battled for third. Buchholz lead increased as Quinton Miller looked to the high line around the Wiltse’s. Buchholz scored the win, Grother, and Miller followed respectively.
