Jackie Boggs wins $10,000 in the Southern 50 at Southern Ohio Speedway

WHEELERSBURG, Ohio (September 2) - On one of the hottest days of the summer, the action was fast and furious on the track for the running of the “Southern 50” at Southern Ohio Speedway. A great field of cars from 5 different states assembled at SOS on Friday, September 2nd for the “Southern 50” which boasted a $35,625 total purse.
Jackie Boggs took the lead to start the “Southern 50” Late Model A-Main. With Boggs leading, the racing back through the pack was furious. On lap 14, a very scary moment happened when third place runner Eddie Carrier Jr. got sideways in front of the field and was hit hard several times. When the carnage cleared, 12 of the 21 cars that started the feature were collected in the wreck. Thankfully, everybody emerged from the crash ok.
On the restart, Boggs continued with the race lead as all eyes were on Wooster, Ohio driver Doug Drown. Drown worked the high side of the track to perfection and moved all the way up to the second position on lap 32 when the caution flag flied. On the restart, Drown tried to get around Boggs but would have no success as the Grayson, KY driver pulled away. Boggs would lead the remainder of the race to come to the checkers and win the $10,000 “Southern 50”! Greg Johnson finished second with R. J. Conley third, Rod Conley fourth, and Doug Drown fifth.
Proctorville, Ohio’s Craig Christian took the feature win in the UMP Modified division after having an exciting battle for the lead with Late Model drivers Doug Drown and R. J. Conley. Conley would finish second with Drown third, Jeremy Berwanger fourth, and Rick Hensley fifth. A strong field of 23 UMP Modifieds was in attendance.
The Southern Ohio Speedway will be in action next on Saturday, September 10th for “$5 Family Fun Night.” On the card will be Steel Block Late Models, UMP Modifieds, Bombers, Sport Mods, and an Enduro.
