Ruhlman posts Sunoco ALMS Baltes Classic victory at Eldora Speedway

ROSSBURG, Ohio (September 4) - With Sunday’s Baltes Classic victory at Eldora Speedway, Brian Ruhlman entered into a 3-way tie for the most Sunoco American Late Model Series (ALMS) wins at the legendary one-half mile clay oval. That win gave him a total of 5 feature wins to date, the equal number of wins gained by Kris Patterson and Jeep VanWormer. In other feature action Sunday night, Matt Westfall captured the UMP (United Midwestern Promoters) Modified finale, while defending Stock Car champion Mike Dirksen etched yet another feature win.

In an Eldora Speedway first, the ALMS Late Models took the green flag three-wide, with outside pole-sitter Ryan VanderVeen shooting into the early lead over quick qualifier Andrew Reaume, Ruhlman and Duane Chamberlain. VanderVeen, a previous winner of the Most Improved Driver award at Eldora, lived up that hype by turning in a new flawless performance up front.

A lap two caution flag failed to deter VanderVeen, as when the green flag action resumed, he again shot into the lead. The top four runners pretty much were setting the pace in the early stages of the 33-lap WIX Filter sponsored event, but content to sit status quo was Curtis Roberts, who was moving through the field from his 17th place starting slot.

A rash of caution flags slowed the pace considerably, yet each time VanderVeen ruled supreme on the restarts.

However, on lap 15 Reaume made incidental contact with VanderVeen, with the result being a swap of positions. Four laps later, Reaume, while leading, charged into the pits under a yellow flag, giving the lead back to VanderVeen. But, hot on his heels was Ruhlman, a former Late Model champion at Eldora.

It took another three laps for Ruhlman to gather the momentum to move into the lead that he was to hold to the finish.

Through all of this, combined with attrition, Roberts steadily inched forward and appeared that he may have had something for Ruhlman, but time ran out and he settled for runner-up honors. J.R. Hotovy advanced to third at the finish, with VanderVeen and Jerry Rice completing the top five. Chamberlain had originally crossed the line fourth, but fell short of the minimum weight requirement at the post-race weigh in.

Westfall’s win was a thrilled, as he repeatedly held back the challenges of multi-time winner Jeff Babcock.

At the onset of the Modified finale, it was former champion Scott Orr out in front in rim-riding style; however that ended at the end of two laps, when something broke on his mount and he retired to the pit area. Westfall had been riding in second spot, and capitalized on the Orr misfortune to take the lead he was to hold to the finish.

By lap five, Babcock was on Westfall’s tail and the veteran Eldora fans were confident it was only a matter of time before he took the lead and yet another win. However, that time never appeared as Westfall did a fantastic piece of driving to negate every more that Babcock could throw at him, to take the win.

Babcock held on for second, with Ruhlman doing double duty to finish third. Mike Dirksen and Jerry Bowersock completed the top five.

Dirksen had an impressive string of track championships built up going into Sunday’s season finale for that division – but this year things just weren’t going right for him.

He turned all of that around with a strong win over Dean Pitts, Bob Burch, Ed Johnson and Shawn Phillippi.
