Cook captures $4,000 Carolina Clash victory at Wythe Raceway

RURAL RETREAT, Va. (September 17) - Ray Cook left Rural Retreat Virginia Saturday night with a $4000 Carolina Clash victory, the XS Power Batteries Fastest Qualifier Award, and a new track record. During qualifying Cook set a blistering time of 16.082 on his second lap to set a new track record. It was the 3rd time this season the track record has been broken. Jonathon Davenport broke the track record back in July then Chris Madden broke Davenport's record at the first of September. The previous record was a time of 16.188.

Kenny Compton Jr. turned a fast lap of 16.130 to pick up the front row starting spot beside Cook. Dennis Franklin, Tim Allen, and Ray Tucker filled in the top 5 qualifiers. At the drop of the green Cook battled Compton through the first turn and pulled out to an early lead. Compton was followed by Rambo, Tim Allen, and Ray Tucker. On lap 9 the first caution flag flew as the 14 car of David Taylor slammed the outside wall off turn 4. Cook was directly behind Taylor and nearly got caught up in the incident.

On the Delaware double file restart Compton maintained control of the second spot followed by Rambo, Tucker, and Autry. Jeff Smith was on the move as he moved up to the 7th spot by lap 12 and up to 6th by lap 21. On lap 20 Craig Shuffield's night came to an end as he made hard contact with the inside retaining wall down the back stretch.

As the laps started to wind down Compton began to close the gap running Cook down and looking for grip on the bottom grove. On lap 38 the caution flew for the last time to set up a green, white, and checkered. On the restart Compton gave one last bid trying to overtake Cook but Cook held on to take his second Carolina Clash victory in a row. Cook was followed to the line by Compton, Rambo, Smith, and Tucker.

In the JE Pistons Roush/Yates "Chase for the Championship", Kenny Compton Jr. moved to the point overtaking Rambo by 2 points. Roffers held onto the third spot in the Chase with his 6th place finish and Jeff Smith holds onto 4th place in Chase points. Mike Gault moved into the 5th with his 7th place finish. Gault started 14th on the grid and gained 7 spots en-route to take the Safety Kleen Hard Charger of the Race Award.

The Next event for the Carolina Clash will be September 24 at the Dublin Motor Speedway in Dublin North Carolina.
