Carrier takes 1st Harvest 50 Win! Andre Awesome In Sprints
Johnson Jumps for Harvest Cash!! Takes Road Warrior Challenge

STEWART, Ohio (September 17) - A nearly full house and lots of on track action was the highlight of the 28th annual running of the Harvest 50 at Skyline Speedway (Stewart,Ohio) where Salt Rock, WV driver Eddie Carrier, Jr. brought home the $5,000 victory for the AMRA Late Models, over longtime leader Josh McGuire. Kenny Johnson made a late race pass of Chris Stotts to claim the Road Warrior Challenge $1,500 to win, 30-lap main for the AMRA Modifieds; and Grafton, WV driver Andre Layfield captured the companion 25-lap Harvest 50 Sprint Car win in the Ohio Valley Sprint Car Association series.

As a surprise gesture to the McVey family, the night's racing activities were dedicated to Paul Pappy McVey, who spent most of his life around racing; and up until last year was active in the C & S Racing Photo stand. McVey also owned race cars for many, many years. The McVey family expressed its gratitude to track owner Billy Jarrell and all fans, drivers, and track crew.

Said Carrier in victory lane, "The caution was the key to the win. I don't think I coulda got him without the caution, but I might have. Up to that point, I just kept my line and hadn't really tried another line."

"It was to a point where I had to make a move, and then the caution flew. To get by Josh I had to try another line, so I moved to the lower middle and the car was fast there. I had to make sure I cleared him coming out of four. The car sure was good tonight. I've been coming here a long time to get a Harvest 50 win and I finally got one! We've put together a few wins here lately, so maybe this will give us some momentum going down the stretch."

"Thanks to Carl, the fans, and Skyline for this great track here tonight."

Second place Josh McGuire was somewhat disappointed, but chalked it up as one of those racing deals. "Right before the caution, I felt like I spun my tires in lapped traffic. Up to that point it was pretty quiet. The caution hurt, but I'm gonna put it down as a mistake on my part. After I spun them, the tires really sealed over and that was the race."

Fast time of the night for the 47-car field went to West Virginia invader Tim Senic, of Elkins, WV. The first lap of the late model main was a drag race around the 3/8 mile red clay oval between McGuire and multi-time Skyline winner Chris Carpenter. Side-by-side the duo raced until McGuire flexed his muscle for what turned into a 39-lap cakewalk.

Racing back in the pack was downright torrid. B-main winner and 15th place starter Chris Garnes highlighted that action with what turned into a 15th to 5th place run. That spectacular run earned Garnes the hard charger award in his Swartz Extreme #42. Only four cars dropped out and three of those were behind Garnes at the time of exit.

By lap eleven Chris Carpenter and Carrier's Rocket/Grover Racing Engines car were engaged in a full-bodied, fisticuffs of a fight for second. That battle endured some 20 laps before Carrier broke free for second. Also, by lap 11 McGuire was already in lapped traffic and endured the heavy traffic-jam was Carrier and Carpenter minimally cut the gap.

Rod Conley and Ricky Williams battled hard for fourth, then Freddie Carpenter moved into the mix. Around lap 30 the leaders moved out of lapped traffic and were again free sailing. With a clear path ahead McGuire turned on the afterburners some 6-7 car lengths ahead of Carrier.

One at a time Garnes was picking his way to the front. Conley finally shed Williams as Garnes strategically worked by fast timer Tim Senic, Delmas Conley, and Tim Dohm, who now was the last car on the lead lap.

By lap 38 heavy traffic again was the thread of drama Carrier, the Salt Rock Express, had hoped for. But on lap 40 traffic moved out of the picture as Dohm looped it after showing visible contact and gnarled front end. Rod Conley broke during the caution after a solid attempt at 5th place. On the restart, Carrier was all over McGuire. Carrier led lap 41, but McGuire came back to again grab the lead. Side-by-side, Carrier made it stick on the next circuit, then blitzed to the checkered in the same domination McGuire had show earlier.

Father Freddie Carpenter passed son Chris on the 46th circuit. The battle was not the least bit passive as Chris Came back two laps later to recapture third. Rounding out the top ten were Eddie Carrier, Josh McGuire, Chris Carpenter, Freddie Carpenter, Chris Garnes, Ricky Williams, Tim Senic, Delmas Conley, Tim Dohm, and Tyler Carpenter.

In the 25-lap sprint main, Josh Davis and Andre Layfield paced the field to the waving green of Todd Gorrell. Layfield hooked the cushion momentarily, but recovered and was fast, smooth for the next 25 laps. With Layfield comfortably out front, the battle of the night was the torrid dual between teammates Jimmy Stinson and Jimmy Nier in B&J Welding and Contracting entries.

First Stinson, then Nier as the two sliced and diced form the first 15 laps of the main before Nier finally broke free and gave chase to Layfield. Layfield sported a new Barry Jackson GF-1 Chassis with Charlie Fisher power.

When all was said and done the top ten trickled down like this: Andre Layfiend, Jim Nier, Jimmy Stinson, Josh Davis, Aaron Higgins, Dave Dickson, Brian Benson, Greg Mitchell, Eric Martin, and Jesse McCreary.

Said Layfield, "We bought a new car and it is really fast. We shoulda won the first night out but we got the job done tonight. I just tried to go fast and keep it straight and it worked so well, I just went along for the ride."

What was the key to the win for AMRA defending champion Kenny Johnson? "Lapped Traffic," Johnson grinned. "I think we had a decent lead," the winner of 17 features this 2011 quipped. "I tried getting by traffic the best I could. Chris caught me in traffic and drove right by and I just hung right there with him. It was one of those deals where we got in traffic again and I just happened to have the right line. "

"The car was great and I can't say enough about my crew and thanks to the fans. You have to be good and lucky sometimes and tonight we were a little of both," summed up Johnson.

Second place Chris Stotts, visibly dejected, had a different take, "Nobody wants to pay attention to the lay-over flag anymore. Yeah, that was huge, but bottom line was we just got outrun tonight. Kenny was fast all night long."

Third place Doug Henry, visibly pleased with his run, said, "We struggled all year long and tonight I think we found it. We finally found what we were missing and it turned out to be a good night, just a little late in the season." Henry stormed from 8th to third against a very stout field of modifieds.

Johnson jumped into the lead early and for the first couple laps met some resistance from up-and-coming Mike McPherson. Johnson soon started to check out, running anywhere on the track in his Billy Lloyd Engines/Shaw Chassis #1J. That left McPherson, Deana Groves, and Chris Stotts to battle for position. The battle of the eleven's were strung out down the line in a hot, competitive battle as Roy Roush, Matt Holcomb, the defending Road Warrior Champ; and Shawn Donahue shook up the field back in the pack.

Meanwhile, Doug Henry was making his move up the ladder and toward the front. Passing was at a premium. Although the track laid down rubber, the surface was spongy and had some tack, making for great racing throughout the night. Rick Venham, Jr. and Andy Bond worked hard to crack the top ten with Venham eventually moving from 11th to 7th and Bond 12th to 8th. Vince Conrad earned hard charger with a 17th to 11th place run after winning the B-main.

By lap 20 Stotts and Johnson were locked in a battle-royal with side-to-side racing amid a gaggle of lapped cars. Initially, the wall of traffic helped Stotts make his move, but in the end the roles were reversed. On lap 24 Stotts pulled Johnson coming out of four and led the next two circuits, nearly three, when Johnson was in the right spot to break clear for a milli-second and make a high-side pass over Stotts.

Stotts fought back, but not enough time remained as Johnson stormed across the line for his 17th win of the year. Roush won the battle of the 11's with a strong fifth behind another good run from McPherson.

Rounding out the top ten were Kenny Johnson, Chris Stotts, Doug Henry, Mike McPherson, Roy Roush, Matt Holcomb, Rick Venham, Jr., Andy Bond, Matt E. Holcomb, and Deana Groves.
The racing finalized Skyline's point's racing. Points will be posted when they are available. Possibly Skyline will run another race or two, possibly with a Sprint Car/ Late Model Invitational with Modifieds on Oct. 8. Again this date is just tentative and fans should visit the website or facebook for further announcements. The AMRA Road Warriors race again Saturday, Oct. 1 at K-C Raceway.
