Title: Chris Ferguson Victorious in Ultimate Series Stick Elliott Memorial Post by LMR on 10/05/11 at 2:41pm FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE October 4, 2011 ________________________________________ Chris Ferguson Victorious in Ultimate Series Stick Elliott Memorial at Cherokee by Kelley Carlton Mt. Holly, North Carolina – After a whirlwind day that saw him compete in 4 different racing events in 3 different cars Chris Ferguson parked his #22 Warrior Race Car in a long cherished Victory Lane. Ferguson dominated the 27th Annual Stick Elliott Memorial at Cherokee Speedway. Ferguson was 2nd quickest in qualifying and then led flag-to-flag to pick up the $4000 Ultimate Series-sanctioned win. “This is a race that was on my list. I have always wanted to be able to put a check mark next to it. I grew up watching my heroes run in this race and to add my name to such an impressive list of past winners is just amazing.” Ferguson said of his win. Ferguson jumped into the lead at the outset of the 40 lapper with an aggressive maneuver which gave him the lead and ultimately the win. “I knew I kind of got a good jump on Chip there. I had maybe a nose ahead of him at the flagstand. I knew if I pinched (turn) one I could pick up a car length or two exiting the corner. Chip raced me clean and I appreciate that. That’s how we want to race. I felt him there on the backstraight and hustled the car back down so I didn’t get into him. It feels good to get a win in front of a lot of our friends and supporters. We needed a win and this is a big boost for us.” Ferguson said. When asked about the point lead Ferguson was evasive “we just want to come back to the Blue-Gray and try to win the race. If we can do that the points will take care of themselves.” Ferguson began his day in the early afternoon competing in a US Legends Sprint Car at East Lincoln Speedway in Stanley, North Carolina. In his first ever stint behind the wheel of a fender-less machine Ferguson finished 3rd behind East Lincoln champion Will Evernham and regular Danny Bohn. In the 2nd race Ferguson incurred some suspension damage and wasn’t able to finish the race. “That was a lot of fun. Those cars are really fast and have a completely different feel than anything I have ever driven. I ran pretty well in that first race and I think we would have been about the same in the 2nd one but we broke something in the front end. I want to thank Ray Evernham and all the people over at East Lincoln for inviting me over to run that deal. I had a great time and hope to drive one of those US Legend Sprint Cars again someday.” Ferguson commented. Ferguson also piloted the Mike Mercer owned GM Performance Late Model at Cherokee on Saturday. Ferguson started in the 4th position and moved up one spot to finish 3rd in his 2nd appearance in the Chicken Hauler Barry Wright machine. “I appreciate Mike offering me a chance to run his crate car. He has really nice equipment and is great to work with. It had been a while since we ran a crate car but it came back to me. It’s a little different than driving the super car for sure. But we had fun and got those guys a good finish so it was a good deal.” Ferguson added. Ferguson’s victory coupled by the misfortune of Chip Brindle, who led the series points entering the Cherokee event, along with Casey Roberts’ 6th place finish indeed vaulted him back to the top of the Ultimate Series point standings. Ferguson now leads Roberts by a slim 2 point margin headed into the late November series finale at Cherokee. The Blue-Gray 100 is a 100 lap event that will pay $10,000 to win.
