Brandon Thirlby and Dennis Taghon Score Cherry Raceway Topless Wins On Michigan Auto Racing Fan Club Night

Fife Lake, Michigan (Friday, June 8th, 2012): It was a thrilling night of racing on Friday, June 8th at Cherry Raceway in Fife Lake, Michigan as it was Topless Night / Michigan Auto Racing Fan Club Night with all six weekly divisions in action led by the UMP Super Late Models and UMP Modifieds who took off the roofs and were going for “Double Points” throughout the night! It was also "Operation Home Front Night", with the Hooters Girls from Traverse City, Michigan & Operation Home Front Sponsored Race Cars on Display!

The Four-Cylinders Compacts Feature was first on the night and it would be 16-year-old Cara Neverth and Defending Track Champion, 13-year-old Autumn Beeman, who was making her first start of the season, leading the field to the green. Beeman took the early lead but had to deal with a hard-charging fellow 13-year-old, Chris Casey as well as 14-year-old Rheanna Doberstein.

After a lengthy battle throughout the event, Casey was able to overtake the reigning champion and from there, the Williamsburg, Michigan teenager in his #00 Wilson Plumbing / Mercury would hang on to collect his third Feature Win in three starts. Beeman finished second while Doberstein and Neverth rounded out the field. Beeman picked up the Heat Race win.

The Street Stocks rolled out next for their main event and it would be 16-year-old Andy Nickerson III and 19-year-old Rookie Points Leader, Allen Oyer bringing the field out of turn four to start. The front row battled for several laps before Current Points Leader Bob Green joined the battle. Oyer and Green collided sending both to the rear and giving the lead to Nickerson III.

Green was a man on the mission after that and in the end; the Fife Lake, Michigan veteran in his #23 Olson’s Auto Body / Chevrolet would overtake Nickerson III to score his third straight Feature victory in three starts! Nickerson III finished second over 17-year-old Richard Clay Jr., while Dan Klinglesmith and Oyer finished off the top five. Oyer collected the Heat Race win.

Up next were the Four-Cylinders Warriors Feature and it would be Current Points Leader Mark Nienhouse starting on the pole along-side Rookie and Teammate Jim Durga. Nienhouse paced the field for the first six laps before 15-year-old Nick Olds charged through the field and the battle was on for the top spot as they sliced and diced through lapped traffic.

In the end though, Olds would finally overtake Nienhouse and the Empire, Michigan teenager in his Taghon’s Garage / Chevrolet would score his first ever Warriors Feature Win after moving up from the Compacts division this season. Nienhouse settled for second over Ron Doberstein Jr., Durga, and 75-year-old Ron Doberstein Sr., wrapped up the top five. Nienhouse and Olds won the Heat Races.

The UMP Modifieds rolled out next for their main event and Paul Johnson and Dennis Taghon would lead the field to the green flag. At the drop of the green flag Joe Rokos and John McCaul began to make their charge through the field after starting mid-pack. On lap four, McCaul and Rokos would collide and end both drivers nights early.

When the smoke cleared and the dust settled, Dennis Taghon would lead flag to flag en route to his first ever feature win with the UMP Modifieds as the Empire, Michigan veteran in his #37 Taghon’s Garage / Dirt Werx Racecars machine climbed out of his car to the roar of the home track crowd. Tony Gokey finished second with Paul Johnson, Wayne Taghon, and 16-year-old Rookie Points Leader, Andy Nickerson III, who was doing double-duty, was fifth. McCaul and Rokos scored the Heat Race triumphs.

In the Cruiser Bombers division, 2010 Track Champion Roger McQueen and Defending Track Champion Emery Smith brought the field to Chief Starter Tim Beebe’s green flag and it would be McQueen leading the field into the first corner. 14-year-old Jimmy Hiller charged from his fourth starting spot into second and began stalking the former champion.

Hiller would grab the lead away on lap 10 and from there, the Kalkaska, Michigan teenager in his #95 Forest Area Car Company / Chevrolet would make it three for three on the year with his “Three-Peat” in winning the Feature. McQueen was second over Smith, while two Rookies, Alicia Roszczewski and J.J. Arbour were the final top five. Ty Phillips and Smith scored the Heat Race victories.

To close out the night, the Topless UMP Super Late Models Feature went out onto the track as Andy Chester and UMP DIRTcar Racing Series Michigan State Points Leader, Michigan Dirt Cup Late Models Tour Points Leader, and Current Track Points Leader, Brandon Thirlby started on the front row. Thirlby rocketed by Chester to grab the early lead and he would bring Seven-Time Track Champion Eric Spangler with him.

Spangler threw every trick he had in his arsenal at Thirlby, but the Traverse City, Michigan stand out hung on as the driver of the #m14 Thirlby Automotive / Mastersbilt Racecars entry would pick up his second consecutive Feature Win in two starts and extend his Track Points Lead in the process. Spangled settled for second with Greg Gokey, Rookie Brook Brasington, and Chester completing the top five. Thirlby and Gokey were the Heat Race Winners.
