DROWN DOUSES HILLTOP LATE MODELS; SMITH SNARES 1st MOD CHECKER; DICKERSON BAGS STREET STOCK BONUS

MILLERSBURG, OH (June 16) - It was another close and action packed night of racing at Hilltop Speedway Saturday night that had the crowd buzzing all night. Heat winners Ryan Markham and Mark Gardiner would start on the front row of the Holmes Tire Late Model main with fast qualifier and dash winner Doug Drown in third. As they came out of turn two on the opening lap, they were three wide and with Markham edging into the lead at the end of the 1st lap. Both Gardiner and Drown moved past Markham on the next lap as Gardiner was able to keep Drown in second for the next six circuits. Wooster’s Drown would take to the highside of turns three and four at the end of lap seven and edge past Gardiner for the lead. Behind the three front runners, a five car war between Brad Malcuit, Mike Lonas, Rick Bond, Eric Myers, and Charlie Duncan as they were changing positions on every lap. As the race wore on, Drown, in his second night in the drivers seat of the Weekly Electric & BHR #63 began to pull away to score his 1st win of the year and his 19th career win at Hilltop and his second of the week end after winning at MCS on Friday. Gardiner and Markham would hold their places for second and third as Malcuit would finish fourth. With five laps to go, Bryan Casey was ninth and in final laps, stormed past Duncan, Myers, Bond and Lonas to capture fifth.

The Raceday Photos Modified feature would start with heat winners Darrell Mayer and Nashport’s Jimmy Smith up front with dash winner Norm Aronhalt and Jess Hartman in row two. At the drop of the green flag, Mayer grabbed the lead and held it for the opening two laps but slipped high in turn two on lap three that allowed Smith, Hartman and Aronhalt by. With numerous cautions slowing the pace, Smith held the lead as fast qualifier Jesse Wisecarver moved past Hartman at the halfway mark. During a caution at that time, Aronhalt had to go pitside to change a tire as Kevin Morehouse and Mayer was in the top five now. On the restart, Chris Basich took over fifth from Mayer as Wisecarver was working on Smith for the lead. With four laps to go, Morehouse stopped on the front stretch as the red flag waved. A piece of debris hit Morehouse’s car, bending a roll bar and hitting him in the shoulder, severely bruising it. On the restart, Wisecarver did all he could but Smith and his B&G Painting #280 kept the door shut to post his first Modified win at Hilltop. Aronhalt worked his way back through the field to take third as Basich and Vic Hottinger filling out the top five.

Points leader Kenny Daughriety Jr. started on the pole of the Street Stock Main but it was Mansfield’s Jeremy Dickerson taking the lead at the drop of the green flag. Brandon Gardner moved past Daughrierty Jr. on lap three and moved in on Dickerson’s rear bumper as Scott Wolford and Kyle Dickinson overtook Daughriety Jr. three laps later. Dickerson built up a comfortable lead in his Ohio Door & Sash #44 over Gardner but a caution with two to go for Wolford, bunched the field together. Gardner tried to slide under Dickerson on the restart, but could not make the pass as Dickerson notched his third win of the season and pocketed the bonus money after winning at Wayne County Speedway on Friday. Dickinson, Daughriety Jr. and Larry Jarrett, in his first trip to Hilltop, rounded out the top five. Daughriety Jr., Dickerson and Gardner were the heat winners.

Killbuck’s Terry Adkins jumped into the lead from the outside front row and led all the way to score his fourth Mini Stock win of the season as Brett Adkins and Gary Hensel Jr. wheeled and dealed for second with Brett Adkins winning that duel. Jerry Adkins moved up from his 8th starting position to take fourth from pole starting Jason King. Heat winners were King, Terry Adkins and Dustin Daugherty as Lester Berry won the last chance race.

Jack and John Large won the Bugs-R-Gone Truck heats to start on the front row of their feature and John Large leaped into the top spot when the green flew and never looked back aboard the Warsaw based L &L Motors & Advance Auto Parts #17 to pull into victory circle for the second time this season. Jack Large finished second as son David Potts out ran Dad Kevin Potts for third. Jerry Gardner rounded out the top five.

Last weeks feature winner Cody Stillion and Zanesville’s Tanner McLoughlin was the front row of the Wedge main and as the pair ran side by side on the opening lap, Stillion spun, but kept going, as McLoughlin pulled away and built up a sizable lead and take the 2 Brothers Motorsports & McLoughlin Auto Sales #59 into victory circle for the fourth time in ‘12 at Hilltop Speedway. Destiny Bates finished second as Stillion nipped Tristen Brown at the line for third with Braxton Wilson taking fifth.

Regular racing is set for Saturday, June 23 with all six divisions in action and then on Thursday, June 28th, the UNOH All Star Sprints come in to Hilltop Speedway for the Ohio Sprint Speedweek show with the Raceday Photos Modifieds also on the racing card for that night.
