MORAN, ARONHALT, DICKERSON, HENSEL JR., K. POTTS, M. CRIDER, & BATES SCORCH THEIR WAY TO HILLTOP WINS

by Mike Swanger
MILLERSBUGH, OH (July 7) - The racing on the track matched the hot temperature at Hilltop Speedway Saturday night as heat winners Ryan Markham and Ross Nicastri would lead the field of Holmes Tire Late Models to the green flag with dash winner Devin Moran and fast qualifier Doug Drown in the second row. Markham would lead the way for the first lap with Moran squeezing by on the low side on lap two to take over the lead as Markham and JR Gentry dueled for second. Following a lap four caution for Dave Hornikel, Moran, from Dresden, would start to pull away from the field as Gentry slipped past Markham on lap seven for second as Drown took third on the next circuit with Charlie Duncan taking fifth. As Markham and Duncan raced for fourth, 14th starting Wayne Maffett Jr. had moved into the picture and he powered past both on lap ten for that position. Duncan came right back on the next lap to reclaim 4th place as those three battled to the checkered flag for fourth. Up front, Moran and his Custom Cutters, CJ Excavating & Donnie Moran Driving School #99m was building up a straightaway lead over Gentry with Drown in pursuit. As the checkered flag flew, Moran would see it first for the third time this season at Hilltop as points leader Gentry held off Drown for second as Duncan and Maffett Jr. filled out the top five.

Raceday Photos Modified heat winner Matt Samples started on the pole and set the pace for the opening four laps of the feature with quick timer Norm Aronhalt and dash winner Jimmy Smith riding his bumper. Using the unfamilar low groove for him, Aronhalt edged past Samples on lap five with Smith slipping past Samples three laps later for second and then Samples would spin out on the next circuit, giving up third place. As Smith kept pestering Aronhalt and his Ports Petroluem #309 for the lead, Kevin Morehouse, Vic Hottinger and points leader Ryan West were back and forth for third. With the race winding down, Aronhalt, of Warsaw, kept the door closed on Smith to claim his third win of the year as Hottinger claimed his best finish of the season at third followed by Morehouse and West.

Mansfield’s Jeremy Dickerson has been as hot as the weather as he out dragged fellow heat winner Bob Chilcote at the drop of the green flag into turn one and then cruise to his fourth win of the season at Hilltop and pick up the Wayne-Hill bonus money for the second time this year as he won at Wayne County Speedway on Friday night. With the Ohio Door & Sash and Griff’s Engines #44d out front, the fans had their attention on the race for second between Chilcote, John Wilson and points leader Kenny Daughriety Jr. Wilson would edge past Chilcote for second at the halfway mark and with a caution with five to go, would get a shot at Dickerson on the restart, but to no avail as Dickerson sped off for the win. Wilson took home second with Chilcote, Daughriety Jr. and Joe Spearman filling out the top five.

Points leader Terry Adkins and defending track champion Gary Hensel Jr. won the heats of the Mini Stocks to start up front of their feature with Hensel Jr. getting the advantage at the drop of the green flag and then spent all race keeping the McKenzie Concrete, Nold Avenue Bar and DJ Directional Service #28h out front despite several attempts by Adkins to get by as he could pull alongside of Hensel Jr. but could never get by. Jerry Adkins ran third all race long as Brett Adkins, Jason St. John and Moose Workman changed positions nearly every lap before finishing in that order. For Hensel Jr. of Apple Creek, it would be his third win of the season at Hilltop.

Sunbury’s Kevin Potts swept the Bugs-R-Gone Trucks as he won the heat and led flag to flag for his sixth win of the year aboard the Proscape Landscaping, JWC Electrical Services and Welders on Wheels #8k. The points leader was challenged for the first two laps of the feature by Jack Large, who would spin out on the next circuit. David Potts would inherit second place and he would keep John Large at bay for second with Cole Lillibridge recording his best finish of fourth followed by Jack Large.

In the last three Mini Wedge features, Coshocton’s Destiny Bates had finished a close second twice plus a third place finish but Saturday night, she took the lead from points leader Cody Stillion on lap two and never looked back for her first win. Driving the A & B Roofing and Constuction #500, who also won the heat race, she was followed across the finish line by Stillion and a fast closing Taylor Huggins with Tristen Brown and Braxton Wilson rounding out the top five.
Making their second appearance of the season were the ModLites as Millersburg’s Mike Crider took the lead from heat winner George Engelrt on lap two and then hang on to score the win. Josh Crider finished third.

Next Saturday night, July 14th, Hilltop Speedway will host the ADRA Late Models with $3,000 going to the winner. The Street Stocks, Mini Stocks, Bugs-R-Gone Trucks and the Mini Wedges will also be in action as the Raceday Photos Modifieds take the night off.
