Satterlee’s Slide-Job Gets it Done Friday at Winchester
Franklin Impressive With 3rd Pure Stock Score

by Doug Watson
Winchester, VA- “That was the most intense race I’ve ever been in.” Were the words from Rochester Mills Pa.’s Greg Satterlee as he was triumphant in the 35-lap “Red Ninninger Memorial” last Friday night at Winchester speedway. The win for Satterlee, aboard his Satterlee Petroleum Rocket no. 22, was his second Winchester late model feature win of 2012 and netted him a cool $3000 pay day.

Last Saturday’s late model winner Kenny Moreland and Greg Satterlee paced the field down to the initial green flag of the event. Moreland blasted into the race lead as the mob exited turn-two. Moreland was on a rail as he lead the event through lap-fifteen, with Satterlee in tow. Moreland’s undoing came on lap-sixteen as he jumped the cushion in turn-four allowing Satterlee to grab the top-spot. Meanwhile, eighteenth-starting Dan Stone was rim-riding the topside of the speedway and had reached second with the Moreland miscue on lap-sixteen. Stone would then shoot by Satterlee on lap-seventeen to become the race’s third different leader. However, the race was far from over. As Stone continued to lead, Satterlee re-asserted himself as the duo raced in and out of lapped cars for several laps. As Stone took the white flag he went low in turn one to negotiate a lapped car. Stone cleared the lapped machine, but Satterlee drove in deep as well, catching Stone off guard as Satterlee’s perfectly executed slide-job would put him back in the lead and the eventual win over Stone.

“That track was crazy fast tonight.” Satterlee stated in Winchester’s victory lane. “I saw Dan go low going into one there on the last lap and figured I’d drive it in there as hard as I could and I don’t think he saw me coming, but there was enough room to get by and get the win. Dan and I raced hard together for a lot of laps and I want to congratulate him on finishing second.” Wednesday Camp Barnes winner David Williams was third, Twenty-eighth starting Jamie Lathroum was fourth and Daryl Hills had a solid run as he would complete the top-five. Setting fast time in time trials over the 31-car field was Kenny Moreland with a one-lap time of 14.442. Heats went to Moreland, Satterlee and Keith Jackson with Brian Tavenner winning the consolation.

Mike Franklin picked-up his division-leading third feature win of the season in the 15-lap pure stock feature. Franklin started on the pole, but lost the early race lead to last week’s winner David Kaiser. Kaiser’s lead would only last for two-circuits as Franklin found the high-side of the speedway to his liking as he would assume control of the event on lap-three. From that point on, it would be a race for second, as Franklin held-off current points leader Mike Corbin in the closing laps to post the win. Kaiser held on for third, Mike Grady Jr. was fourth and Buddy Wilson rounded out the top-five. Heats went to Franklin and Donnie Kenney Jr.

The limited late model, u-car and four cylinder features were lost to curfew and will be made up later in the season.
