Title: Skyline Speedway - 7/13 Results Post by LMR on 07/15/12 at 9:25pm Skyline Speedway July 13, 2012 ________________________________________ Mayle Manhandles AMRA Late Models at Skyline Speedway by Scott Wolfe STEWART, OHIO- It was a typical Friday the 13th, but the mythical gloom and doom couldn't overshadow the good racing at Skyline Speedway Friday night where Chillicothe, Ohio's Danny Smith out-foxed the competition in the 410 $1,500-to-win Ohio Valley Sprint Car Association outlaw sprint feature. Chesterhill, Ohio's Ronnie Mayle edged Fast Freddie Carpenter in the AMRA Tru-Tech Late Model Feature, and Jeremy Berwanger won his fifth Skyline AMRA Malta Modified main during the "Wix 100 Nights of Racing" event at the 3/8 mile Southern Ohio Speedplant. Cole Mayle won the Mike's Auto Body Mini-Wedge main. Although officially Danny Smith led every lap, the battle between the Danville, Indiana native and Mineral Wells, WV driver Wayne McPeek was a classic. Twice McPeek took the lead in turn two only to have Smith come back with a vengeance to lead at the start-finish line. Due to the Century-mark temperatures over the past several days, some dust started to kick up on the speedway, but the conditions didn't hamper the on-track action. McPeek dogged Smith wildly over the first six laps and pulled up alongside the leader on several occasions. McPeek actually took the lead the first time on lap seven, then Smith made a great comeback move to lead once again. McPeek continued his charge as Smith's mount became increasingly loose, while the West Virginia Invader entered the turns hard, but scrubbed off speed upon the exits. Once again, McPeek got by Smith ever-so briefly and nearly clipped Smith's rear nerf on multiple occasions. A Nick Forcum spin brought out the caution on lap 15, tightening the field. McPeek gave chase once again. All the while Josh Davis ran a strong third, but Greg Mitchell began to charge with Nathan Skaggs in tow. Davis fended off much of the field, but began to slow somewhat late in the race with Mitchell in third. On lap 18 another restart bunched up the field. McPeek, Mitchell, Skaggs and Davis battled while all huddled under a blanket for a shot at second. When all was said and done Smith brought home his sixth Skyline win of the year. Rounding out the top ten were Danny Smith, Wayne McPeek, Nathan Skaggs, Greg Mitchell, Josh Davis, Eddie Slone, Jesse McCreary, Bob Tucker, Dave Dickson, and Nick Forcum. Jesse McCreary won the first heat and Smith won the dash. After three attempts to get the Late Model feature underway, it was decided that the track would get some water. The result was a fast track and high quality late model main. Not only was the track fast, but it was super fast, hammer-down style. Ronnie Mayle blasted into the early lead on the newly prepped track and for the early portions of the race was never seriously challenged. After a lap 14 caution for Corey Delancey who tangled with Chris Garnes, the contenders Freddie Carpenter, Andy Bond, and Larry Bond made it a three-way race with Larry Bond eventually taking over third. Bond would exit a lap later with mechanical difficulties. Two circuits later Bob Adams, Jr. and Bub Crum made contact coming out of four. Crum throttled up under the rear quarters of Adams the length of the front chute, then Crum lost control and went headlong into traffic, where he was t-boned ultra-hard by Tony Roush. The hard hit continued as both cars pummeled hard into the turn one concrete, eliminating both Roush and Crum. Another caution for debris with three laps to go set up a late race shoot -out between Mayle and Fast Freddie Carpenter. Tooth-and-nail, the high-speed chase continued flat-footed to the checkered. Mayle bobbled somewhat in turn one of the last lap, his only miscue in the 25-lapper, Carpenter took advantage and led by a car length coming out of two prompting Mayle to drive it in hard while playing catch-up going into three. The cars came out of four side by side and raced to a photo finish with Mayle's Kryptonite Chassis / Malcuit powered machine carrying enough momentum to win by an inch at the finish. Rounding out the top ten were Ronnie Mayle, Freddie Carpenter, Ralph Withem, Andy Bond, Nick Corbitt, Randy Arms, Bob Adams, Jr., Nelson Freshour, George Klintworth, and Chris Garnes. Jeremy Berwanger, the Murray City Bandit, led from green to checkered in the lightning fast AMRA Malta Modified main event. Although Berwanger led the entire distance his task was not easy. Nick Corbitt did double duty in the lates and modifieds, doing a great job in each venue. Berwanger withstood early challenges from Andy Bond, who later spun and went to the tail, then fought off a hard-charging Nick Corbitt and Roy Roush. Mike McPherson had a pair of great runs going but a couple bobbles dropped him back to tenth. There McPherson fought back to third before scraping the turn two wall and breaking his suspension. Kenny Johnson, the defending AMRA Champion, moved from back in the pack to third before he too experienced mechanical woes. That left Berwanger, Corbitt, and Roush to fight it out the last three laps with Berwanger taking his fifth win of the year. Rounding out the top ten were Jeremy Berwanger, Nick Corbitt, Roy Roush, Andy Bond, Jeremy Blake, Toby Roush, Jason Brooks, Gary Gould, Tyler Hendrix, and Mike McPherson. Next week, July 20 is the Jack Shutts Memorial race, memorializing the longtime Skyline flagman and head scorer. July 27 is Bicycle Racing Night for the kids along with a winged Mini-wedge Special. Coming August 24 is a triple header of $3,000 to win races in all three Skyline classes. Details will be released soon. The make-up date for the Greg Schilling Memorial Race will be Friday, September 7 in a race that pays $1,699 to win as part of a $17,000 purse for the AMRA Malta Modifieds.
