DEESE JR. ENDS TWO YEAR DROUGHT TO BECOME HAGERSTOWN’S NINTH DIFFERENT WINNER

Hagerstown, Md. – Roy Deese Jr. began Saturday in a dunk tank and ended in victory lane. Just three days short of two years, Deese finally landed a long overdue victory at Hagerstown Speedway on Saturday evening for Law Enforcement Appreciation Night where representatives from the Maryland State Police, Hagerstown City Police and Washington County Sheriff’s Department were on hand earlier for Community Safety Day with various exhibits and demonstrations. The win was the 21st for the eight time and defending late model champion from Laurel, Md.

Chris Ebersole of Big Cove Tannery, PA stretched his lead in the closing laps of the 17th Annual Cornett Tribute for the Ernie D’s pure stocks to 3.153 seconds to post his career second win while Knoxville, Md’s William Crook posted his first win in the D & D Auto Recycling hobby stocks following disqualifications on the final lap.

Deese started third following a random drawing of young fans with starting positions hidden on prizes given to each. Deese started third and was into second on the opening lap, chasing pole sitter, Ashley Barrett until finally making the bottom work and slipping past him for the final five laps and get the win by .586 seconds, his first since August 14, 2010.

“I kept trying to make the bottom work,” Deese said. “I knew Ashley was good where he was and I had to try and do something on the bottom. I kept choosing the bottom on the restarts and it worked out.”

Following an opening lap incident involving Alan Sagi, Frankie Plessinger and Scott Cross whose car ended up on top of Paul Crowl, Barrett opened up a lead on Deese right on the start and pulled ahead by two seconds which he was maintaining. Sixth starting Rusty Sites powered past Pancho Lawler for third on the fifth lap while eighth and tenth starters Jerry Bard and Marvin Winters passed him by the next circuit.

Lawler came to a stop on the 12th lap and Larry Baker II brought out the yellow the next lap. The field regrouped as Sites blasted past Deese on the restart, but Deese came roaring back the next lap as Barrett had a near one second lead on the 16th when Sagi stopped in the fourth turn.

Barrett continued to round the top while Deese was worked the bottom. He pulled alongside Barrett on the 19th which didn’t hold but the next lap, Deese charged past while Gary Stuhler had come from 16th to move into fourth and begin challenging Sites.

Deese drove on to capture the triumph by .586 seconds over Barrett while Sites held off Stuhler for third and Bard ended fifth. Current point leader Nick Dickson was sixth with Stevie Long. Winters, Brian Booze and Kenny Moreland completed the top ten. Bard, Deese and Barrett were the heat winners.

“We’ve struggled for quite awhile," Deese said. “I made some major changes on the car the past two weeks. The car was fine tonight and now I have a new car to race with. I didn’t know if I’d ever see a checkered flag again when I was sitting in the infield watching. This is awesome. Dad and I spend a lot of nights in the garage, seven days a week. When we’re not winning, it’s not that we’re not trying.”

Tony Stoneberger took the pure stock lead from Brandon Churchey on the second lap and stretched out a lead only to coast to a stop in the fourth turn when he developed a transmission problem. Churchey again took the lead as Ebersole arrived in second and began challenging. Ebersole was ahead on the tenth circuit when the caution waved but Brian Miller broke free of the two and three wide racing to get to second after starting ninth. Miller got to within two lengths but Ebersole got up on the wheel and began noticeably pulling away each lap until arriving at the finish with 3.153 seconds to spare.

“These guys are really good drivers and don’t make many mistakes,” Ebersole said. “This class is really good. We have 10-11 different winners this year. It’s really tough. I really had high hopes for this race, it’s the last double points race of the year and here I am.”

Third was Bruce Leibowitz from eighth with 14th starting Keith Koontz followed in fifth by his brother, Kevin Koontz. Billy Ecton Jr, Leibowitz and Ebersole were the heat winners.

Joe Rodgers pulled from the pole to lead the hobby stocks as ninth starting Mark Vegh was into second by lap three. Kyle Durboraw was being challenged by Kenny Thomas who came from the 13th spot with Durboraw taking second on the 14th. On the white flag lap and subsequent restart, two incidents resulted in disqualifications for three drivers with William Crook the next driver in line and the race called official.
