Title: Hagerstown Speedway - 8/18 Results Post by LMR on 08/19/12 at 3:26am Hagerstown Speedway August 18, 2012 _______________________________________ JERRY BARD WAS TOPLESS FOR HIS ERNIE’S BOWERS/DURHAM CHAMPIONSHIP TRIUMPH by Bob Vores Hagerstown, Md. – Former multiple time four cylinder champion Jerry Bard exited his late model Saturday night, the winner of his second career victory and one of Hagerstown’s Speedway’s prestigious events, the topless Ernie D’s Shorty Bowers Bull Durham Championship event. Bard collected $2,500 for the win plus another $500 in lap money for the 25-lap event, one in which he held off challenges from Austin Hubbard to win by .56 second and became the 10th different winner of the late model division. “This is the highest paying race I’ve ever won,” said Bard of Shippensburg, Pa. “I want to dedicate this to my wife Tiffany and my uncle is in the hospital and not in very good shape. This is for him.” J.T. Spence of Winchester, Va. took top honors in the Hoosier Tire Mid Atlantic late model sportsman event while Frederick, Md. drivers Kevin Boyer and Mark Vegh were victorious in their respective Ernie D’s pure stock and D & D Auto Recycling hobby stock events. Following a redraw of the top nine drivers, Bard lined up on the pole but it was second generation driver Kenny Moreland that swept around the first turns and drove ahead with the lead over Bard with Rusty Sites taking second on the third lap. Sites got slowed up before a fifth lap caution was displayed for a slowing Moreland who had to pit with a left rear tire and Bard had got past him for the lead. “I saw his tire going down and I knew once that happened, I could get him on that restart, but if he’d stayed without a flat, I don’t know if I could have caught him,” Bard said. Hubbard quickly got past Dan Stone on the restart and kept the pressure on Bard as they moved into rear traffic on the 15th circuit. Exiting the fourth turn with the lapped car of Brian Tavenner ahead, Hubbard went low and Bard around the high side as Hubbard led the 17th lap by a few feet in the three wide move, but Bard wasn’t about to let the win get away. He powered around the first turns to retake the lead and continue hitting the cash register each time around for the lap money. Hubbard remained strong but Bard was equally as forceful and carried his momentum to the finish. “I saw Austin when we got into lapped traffic and I saw him shoot to the bottom,” Bard said. “We had to split Tavenner and I thought ‘Well, it’s all or nothing. I’m going to go as hard as I can on the top’ and it worked.” Stone was a close third with last week’s winner Roy Deese Jr. from 11th and taking fourth from Jeremy Miller with five to go. Marvin Winters ended sixth with Sites, 23rd starting Frankie Plessinger, Gary Stuhler who came from the rear following a fourth lap incident and 15th starter Ashley Barrett completing the top ten. Scott LeBarron, Moreland and Miller were the heat winners. Tyler Castle led the late model sportsman from the pole with Ronnie Dennis trailing until a fourth lap restart when Dennis powered off the fourth turn to take control and quickly stretch his lead to three seconds by the time Spence had come from 11th and passed ninth starter Justin Weaver and Courtney Shreiner for second on the 10th lap. Spence could visibly be seen closing the gap and by the 15th circuit, was on Dennis’ bumper and quickly dropped him to second and he was just as fast pulling away to speed past the checkered by 3.532 seconds over 12th starting Pete Weaver who got past his son Justin and also Dennis on the final lap. Fifth was Andy Fries who came from tenth. Terry Flaherty ended sixth over Wayne Walls Jr. from 15th, Kyle Lear from 14th, Shreiner, and Mike Walls. Heats went to J. Weaver, Castle, Flaherty and Dennis with Paul Cursey taking the B Main. Tony Stoneberger led the opening two laps of the pure stock feature until a red flag waved for a Drew Fitzsimmons and Rick Stouffer incident on the backstretch with Stouffer rolling several times. Stoneberger’s car was leaking an excessive amount of fuel while parked on the front stretch and was sent pitside to check the safety issue. Darrin Younker led on the restart with Kevin Koontz moving to second and challenging while Boyer moved in to make it a three wide race with Koontz leading the 11th lap before previous week’s winner Chris Ebersole joining in to make it a four car battle as Boyer broke free and took his second checkered by two lengths over Ebersole with Koontz, Younker and Brian Miller completing the top five. Younker, Billy Ecton Jr. and Stoneberger were the heat winners. Fourth starter Matt Smith took the opening lead of the hobby stocks over Nathaniel Younker as Vegh came from ninth to second on the sixth lap and started looking under Smith. The race remained under the green flag as it only took one slip by Smith in the second turn for Vegh to drive by and hold to a less than two length lead at the finish. Younker was third with Kenny Thomas and Gary Proctor ending fifth. Proctor and Smith were the heat winners.
