Isaac no Match for Keith Jackson, Romps to Winchester Third
Justin Weaver Scores Career First in Greg Kerr Memorial

by Doug Watson
Winchester, VA- With remnants of Hurricane Isaac looming all through the Mid-Atlantic region on Saturday, Winchester speedway was able to defy the weather gods, as Odenton Md.’s Keith Jackson registered his division-leading third late model feature win of the season.

The heads-up start placed Jackson and Duane Harbaugh on the front row to start the event. Jackson out-dragged Harbaugh into turn-one as the green was displayed, and from that point on, it would be a race for second as Jackson would go on to lead all 30-laps and collect the $2000 pay day that went along with it. However, a lap-25 caution set the stage, for another epic Winchester finish. Duane Harbaugh, who had run second since the drop of the green, tangled with the lapped car of Bryan Driver, forcing the field to scatter, and bunching up the mob on Jackson’s rear bumper. Defending track champion DJ Myers, who started fifth, gave Jackson a fit over the final five circuits, but Jackson would hold tough and drive his Jack Bland owned Rocket no.41to the popular victory.

“This was our kind of race track tonight.” Jackson stated in his post-race interview. “With all the motor problems we’ve had the past few weeks, it sure does feel good to get all that behind us and get back to victory lane.” Jackson, second in the late model standing coming into the event, spoke about his title hopes. “Kenny (Pettyjohn) has kind of put it out of reach.” Jackson stated. “He’s been so consistent all year and it’s been a pleasure racing with him. Things would be a little different I guess if we hadn’t missed two-shows early in the year, but I have to thank Jack, all the people who help with the car and especially my dad. We’ve had a pretty good season.” Tenth-starting Jim Bernheisel came home third, nineteenth-starting Trever Feathers was fourth and Bryan Bernheisel rounded out the top-five. Heats for the 20-cars on hand went to Jackson and Harbaugh.

Justin Weaver became the sixth different limited late model winner of the season with his first-career Winchester feature win in the 20-lap “Greg Kerr Memorial”. Weaver, who lined-up fourth for the start, wrestled the top-spot from former Winchester late model champion Doug Jones on the tenth-lap, and would then go on to lead the remaining ten-laps to score the break-through win. “We’ve run second so many times here this season, and it feels great to finally get a win here at Winchester.” Four-time winner Andy Anderson came home third, Mike Walls was fourth and Scott Palmer completed the top-five. Heats for the 24 cars entered went to Tanner Kerr, Bubby Tharp Jr. and Justin Weaver.

Defending track champion Mike Corbin drove to his third feature win of the season in the 15-lap pure stock main. Mike Grady Jr. lead the first three-laps before Corbin would take the race lead for good on lap-four. As Corbin lead to the checker, twelfth-starting and current points leader, Mike Franklin dogged Corbin over the final three-laps, but would settle for runner-up money. “It feels good to win again.” Corbin stated. “We had a third or fourth place car tonight, but I guess we were good enough to get out front quick and hold everybody off.” Buddy Wilson was third, Terry Staton fourth with Donnie Kenney coming home fifth. Heats for the 18 car field went to Mike Bennett and David Kaiser.

Mark Vegh drove to his first Winchester win of the season in the 15-lap enduro stock main. Vegh, who started second, zipped into the race lead on the first-lap and would never look back, as he would take the win over Bryan Neff, Jamie Mills, Bryan Green and “Krazy” Kenny Thomas. Heats went to Vegh and Green. With his fifth place feature effort, “Krazy” Kenny Thomas became the 2012 enduro stock track champion. “What a relief!!” Thomas stated. “We worked so hard all season to get this championship and I couldn’t be more proud of what we’ve done here at Winchester this season.”

Randy Linaburg was the winner of the 15-lap four-cylinder feature. Linaburg started second and would eventually lead every lap to collect his fourth feature win of the season. “This has been a great season!! There’s nothing like winning here at Winchester.” Ryan Laye took runner-up honors, Hunter Crane was third, Gary Newell fourth and point leader Tommy Whitt was fifth. Heats for the 15 cars went to Linaburg and Laye.
