ANDERSON TWO FOR TWO AFTER CAPTURING STEEL BLOCK BANDIT OPENER AT HAGERSTOWN

by Bob Vores
HAGERSTOWN, Md.  (April 27) – Making only his second career start in the Steel Block Bandits Late Model Series, Andy Anderson was in Hagerstown Speedway’s victory lane Saturday evening after capturing the series fifth season opener and fourth overall event held at the speedway.

Tony Catlett of Hedgesville, WV and Gary Proctor of Big Pool, MD each drove to victory lane for the second time of the season in the respective Ernie D’s pure stocks and D&D Auto Recycling hobby stocks.

Anderson, of Bunker Hill, WV, also was two for two, having won the Small Car National qualifier just two weeks previously in the Doug and Dougie Timmons racer.

Anderson started sixth and swept around the outside of both Justin Weaver and Rick Hulson on the 19th lap and scored the leader on the 20th. He later beat Weaver by .804 seconds in the 30-lap feature.

“I wasn’t sure I was going to get them,” Anderson said. “Hats off to Justin, he could have used me up there on the front stretch and he didn’t. That’s what won the race, that lap right there. I think I went a little harder on left rear tires than they did but it paid off.”

The Steel Block Bandit event got off to a skirmish in the second turn when Hulson and several others got turned around in the second turn, but got their starting spots back for the restart. Hulson pulled to the front over Mike Walls and fifth starter Weaver who quickly advanced into third and then into second on the fourth circuit while Gene Knaub came from seventh to grab third on the sixth.

Following a seventh lap caution for Joey Leavell and one on the ninth when Kris Eaton rolled to a stop, the remaining laps were under green.

Hulson continued to lead with Weaver in tow but Anderson passed Knaub on the last restart. Weaver closed on Hulson and was giving it his all for a few laps as Hulson resisted but then Anderson was on the scene and tried his luck around the outside. His effort paid off when he came away with the lead. Weaver got around Hulson the next lap and chased Anderson into rear traffic two laps later.

With five to go, Anderson continued the charge to the checkered and won by .804 seconds as Weaver finished in the runner up position for the third consecutive time in SBB competition at Hagerstown. Hulson was followed by Knaub and tenth starter Tyler Armstrong.

Anderson said, “I wasn’t sure in the beginning, Hulson went down there and parked and I got in the back of him there and the 86 had to check up. We fell back there and then we got rolling. I have to thank Dougie and Doug for letting me drive this thing. It’s almost a dream come true.”

Kyle Lear was sixth after starting 11th with 18th starter Rick Singleton next followed by Chad Myers from 20th. Brad Ritter (13th) and Bruce Kane (15th) completed the top ten. Scott Palmer, Walter Arthur, Mike Walls and Hulson were the heat winners with Paul Cursey and Singleton winning the consolations.

Keith Koontz pulled to the pure stock lead from the outside pole to have brother Kevin take second and challenge him as the front pack ran two and three wide. Catlett came from seventh to squeeze past the brothers and take the lead on lap eight. Kevin K. held to second with Kevin Boyer taking the spot with five to go while Darrin Younker got past Koontz for third with two to go. Koontz ended fourth over Mike Warrenfeltz. Catlett and Boyer were the heat winners.

After a spin by the polesitter Devin Welsh on the opening lap of the hobby stock feature, the race remained under green until the finish. Gary Proctor charged from third into the lead over Kenny Thomas. Thomas led the 13th and 14th laps until Proctor got under to retake the lead on the backstretch of the final lap and win by less than a car length over Thomas and Mark Vegh. Joe Rodgers and William Crook were next. Thomas and Proctor were the heat winners.
