FLAHERTY ENDS HAGERSTOWN DRY SPELL WITH LATE MODEL SPORTSMAN VICTORY

HAGERSTOWN, MD – With his dominating triumph at Hagerstown Speedway on Saturday night, Hagerstown’s Terry Flaherty ended a dry spell dating all the way back to April 25, 2009. Coming on Fire/Rescue Appreciation and ARCH Fan Night, it was his career third in the Hoosier Tire Mid Atlantic late model sportsman division and ended 3.163 seconds ahead of the divisions opening day winner, Paul Cursey.

Also getting to the checkered flag first were Darrin Younker of Berkley Springs, WV, his season first in the Ernie D’s pure stocks, Gary Proctor, Big Pool, MD, his third in the D & D Recycling Hobby Stocks and Ryan Laye of Ft. Loudon, PA who is two for two in the National Speedway Supply/Dave Padula Motorsports four cylinders.

Chad Myers and Andy Fries occupied the front row for the late model sportsman as Myers quickly jumped out front over third starting Flaherty and Fries as Flaherty sped past Myers to take command on lap four and was nearly two seconds ahead when the caution came out on lap six just as Fries took second.
Flaherty again asserted himself and pulled away while Scott Palmer grabbed second but could only see Flaherty getting further away and had opened up more than a 2.5 second lead by a 13th lap caution.

Flaherty again distanced himself from Palmer while Paul Cursey and Justin Weaver were furthering their travels from the tenth and 12th respective positions. Cursey took third from Fries with two to go and then disposed of Palmer on the white flag while Weaver got past Fries with two to go. Flaherty was touring his final lap to end 3.163 seconds ahead of Cursey who was the Liberty Auto and Tire Hard Charger.

“The first two nights we were out in it, we had a problem with it, so I didn’t know what was going on,” Flaherty said. “It feels a lot better now. This win is long overdue.”

Palmer, Weaver and Fries completed the top five while Myers, Courtney Shreiner, Frankie Plessinger, Michael Walls and Dominic Defino from 17th, rounded out the top ten.

Dave Stouffer Jr. took the lead over Rick Stouffer when the pure stocks began as seventh starting Younker charged forward and was past both Stouffer’s before the caution came out on lap three.

Younker led three laps before R. Stouffer got past and Charlie Pensinger joined them at the front. Younker battled back with three to go as some contact was made exiting turn four as Pensinger followed into second place and trailed by .237 seconds at the finish. Stouffer was third with Kevin Boyer and Craig Kline to complete the top five. Younker was the Bill Ecton and Son Hard Charger.

Justin Hansberger led the hobby stocks for the first seven laps until Proctor battled with Kenny Thomas on the way to the front to lead lap eight. Proctor stayed out front as Thomas got into second with three to go while fending off Michael Hyatt. Thomas closed to three lengths at the checkered. Hansberger and Joe Rodgers completed the top five. Jason Sarver, who finished seventh, was the Kline Auto Body and Towing Lucky Seven winner.

Kevin Thomas went from fourth to the lead on lap two for the four cylinders while Laye was into second by lap three. The two broke away from Jeremy Ott and had their own race swapping positions several times in the closing laps as Laye led the 11th but Thomas battled back. Thomas led the final lap but suddenly was off the pace in the final turns as Laye went on to get the win over Ott and John Stoll as Thomas limped to the line in fourth. Fifth finisher Kurt Knepper was the J&S Salvage Hard Charger.
