Dennis Franklin Captures Carolina Clash Win #29 at Wythe Raceway

by Mark Huey
RURAL RETREAT, VA (September 14) - Vic Hill of Morristown, TN was dominant all throughout the raceday events at Wythe Raceway in Rural Retreat, VA. Hill captured the Roush Yates Performance Fast Time Award during qualifying and was on the pole position for the opening laps. Luke Roffers started alongside Hill and the drivers started the event on a rocky note as Luke Roffers and Johnny Pursley battled off turn one, making contact, resulting in a melee that snagged Roffers and Chris Blackwell. Roffers sustained a lot of damage to the front of his Wolfpack Rocket and was retired for the event.

When the race resumed, Dennis Franklin and Vic Hill were in a very heated battle over the first five laps of the race. Hill took the lead on lap four and pressed forward to dominate to a near ¾ lap lead on the track. Hill continued to dominate the event until his car experienced problems in turn three, where he made contact with the guardrailing and suffered a flat tire. The lap 29 caution also saw Ricky Weeks and Jonathan Davenport pit for a flat tire.

Tim Allen assumed the race lead after holding off Johnny Pursley and Dennis Franklin, who made up the top five cars at the restart.

Allen held the race lead over the next four laps until an outside run by Dennis Franklin off turn four gave the race lead to the point leader who pulled away and survived a few late race cautions to take the win.

"This win is for my grandmother who suffered a stroke today. We were not even going to come up here tonight, but I want to thank Steve Cooke for flying me up here and all my crew for getting this car ready for tonight. This race means a lot to me personally and I was driving for her tonight!" stated a very emotional Dennis Franklin from Wythe Raceway Victory Lane. The win was the fourth all-time for Rambo at Wythe and his 29th all time win with the series.

Mike Gault was able to race around Damon Kotke for the fifth-place position after a furious battle for the fourth, fifth and sixth positions panned out on the track in the final laps. Gault was named the Safety Kleen Hard Charger of the Race advancing six spots to finish fifth.
