DAVENPORT, Ia. (May 9) – It was a full night of racing Friday at the Davenport Speedway, with well over one hundred racecars in the pit area. It was also a full night for Chris Simpson of Oxford, Iowa who captured the Lucas Oil MLRA 40-lap late model main.
Simpson won his heat race and started on the pole of the feature, but would not take the lead until late in the race.
Ryan Gustin of Marshalltown jumped out to the early lead and was into lapped traffic by lap ten. While Gustin was out in front, Simpson was battling with Muscatine’s Brian Birkhofer for second. Birkhofer would take the position and later grab the lead on lap 26.
Chris Simpson put his car into the lead on lap thirty and led the final ten laps en route to the victory. Terry Phillips made a late charge finish second, with Birkhofer placing third. Gustin held on to finish fourth and Chad Simpson took fifth.
With 45 late models on hand for the event, five heats and two B-mains were needed to set the starting line-up. Heat wins went to Brandon Sheppard, Rich Bell, Jason O’Brien, Terry Phillips, and Chris Simpson. Jeremy Payne and Jason Jaggers won the B-mains. Twenty-eight cars started the A-main, which went all 40 laps caution-free.

Davenport Speedway Results
Chris Zogg scored the win in the Milan Heating & Air IMCA Modified division. Bob Dominacki led the first 18 laps of the feature, until the caution flag flew as the field was coming to the white flag. Unfortunately the yellow was for Dominacki’s car. Zogg and Brandon Durbin restarted the race side-by-side. Durbin got the early advantage, but Zogg came on strong to take the win.
Doug Crampton managed to finish second. Durbin took third, with Dean McGee and Tony VonDresky completing the top five.
Donnie Louck took home the trophy in the Koehler Electric Street Stock main. Louck would hold off a three-way fight for second to secure the win. Andrew Burk would wind up in the runner-up spot. Jeremy Gustaf finished third with early race leader Cary Brown fourth. Perry Gellerstedt finished fifth.
Bryce Garnhart dominated the Hawkeye Auto IMCA SportMod feature. Garnhart got out to a big lead and held off Austin Moyer down the stretch for the win. Following Moyer were Brandon Jewell, Jacob Beal, and Jake Morris, in that order.
The Roto-Rooter 4-Stock feature may have been the most entertaining race of the evening. There were four lead changes and four-wide racing in the feature that went green, white, checkered. In the end, Brandon Setser stood in victory lane. Eric Stogdell had to settle for second and was followed by Luke Benischek. Andrew Fitzgerald and Zach Dahl completed the top five.
The racing action continues next Friday, May 16th, at the Davenport Speedway. Joining the weekly racing program will be an added attraction, Powder Puff Races.
