CLANTON CLAIMS SUPER LATE MODEL MAIN AT SENOIA RACEWAY

SENOIA, GA (May 30) - If you are currently leading a national racing series point standings, it is usually for a good reason. You are pretty fast and a good racer. Zebulon’s Shane Clanton displayed Saturday night at Senoia Raceway why he is one of the nation’s best dirt late model drivers. Clanton made adjustments throughout the 30-lap main event before finding his set-up and then passing Senoia’s Clint ‘Cat Daddy’ Smith to claim the checkered flag. It was Clanton’s first win at a track his daddy, Billy Clanton, won at many times during his racing career.

“The track was awesome tonight,” said Clanton in victory lane. “You could race anywhere. It was a lot of fun.”

The current World of Outlaws Dirt Late Model Series point’s leader was joined in the winner’s circle by seventeen-year-old Joey Armistead of Senoia. It was the youngster’s fourth straight victory in the Limited Late Model division. Ryan Crane of Panama City, Florida, ended Alabama’s Dylan Knowles streak in the Crate Late Models while Covington’s Sam Carter and Alabama’s Paul Walters went back to back in the Hobby Stocks and Bombers. Alabama’s Jake Sanders was first in the B Cadets, Brandon Bright notched the victory in the Mini Stocks and Cartersville teenager Zach Leonhardi bested the Legends Car field.

Clanton set a new track record in qualifying with a 13.736 second lap for an average speed of just over 98 miles per hour, but Clint Smith would shoot out to the race’s first lead. Clanton slid back and lost second position to Colbert’s Kenny Collins during a lap five restart and faded as far back as fourth when Thomaston’s Shane Fulcher got a nose on him a lap later.

As Smith pulled out to what looked to be a comfortable lead, Clanton made his adjustments and began his charge. He overtook Collins in turn two when the high side of the track slowed for the lapped car of Trevor Thompson of Dallas. The middle groove and a unique angle through the corners allowed for Clanton to reel in Smith and on lap 17 he moved to the inside of the leader to sneak past in turn four. Clanton never looked back posting the victory over Smith, Collins, ‘Magic’ Matt Dooley of Brooks and ‘Mad’ Maddie Crane of Meansville.

In the Crate Late Model feature, Ryan Crane set the tone early that he was going to be the man to beat. ‘Thrillin’ Dylan Knowles provided the chase getting close only a few times. Knowles came into the event riding a four race win streak, but Crane was set on taking away the kid’s glory for a week. Crane won going away with Knowles in second ahead of Alabama’s Mike Combs and Ryan Law. Dublin’s Caleb Gay rounded out the first five.

The Crate Late Models had a few new competitors visit the ‘bull ring’ this past Saturday night as they prepared for a special race offering $1000 to the winner this upcoming weekend. Drivers from Florida, Alabama and middle Georgia were in attendance looking to gain some knowledge for the higher paying event.

Joey Armistead extended his win streak in the Limited Late Model division. The third generation driver led flag to flag to win his fourth straight feature race. LaGrange’s Tod Darda ran close for a few laps, but then found himself in a heated battle with fellow LaGrange competitor Dusty Jones which allowed Armistead to pull away a bit.

Darda and Jones kept the fans’ eyes away from the leader as they raced side by side for the second place position. Fayetteville’s Glenn Morris was also running strong after blowing an engine the week before. Morris moved past Grantville’s Austin Horton on lap eleven and then chased down Darda and Jones.

The final flurry to the finish line saw Armistead take the win with Darda winning by a nose over Morris for second. Dusty Jones faded to fourth with Newnan’s Marcus Caswell rounding out the first five.

Jake Sanders also led flag to flag for his victory in the B Cadets class, but it was with the help of a near caution free race. The only slow down came on the initial green flag when Newnan’s Parrish Duncan ran out of space and climbed the front stretch wall. Sanders took over on the complete restart keeping everyone behind him. Whitesburg’s Blant Duke fought through the field to gain the second place spot, but Sanders had too large of a lead and kept a number of lapped cars between himself and his nearest rival.

Sanders won his first of the season at Senoia Raceway while Duke settled for the runner-up spot. In his first ever appearance at the track, Dublin’s Eric Baggett ran third ahead of Lake Spivey’s Dow Kirkland and 2013 B Cadet champion Roger Arnett of Alabama.

Paul Walters passed Mansfield’s Blake Harmon on lap eleven of the Bomber race to take the lead. The exciting race featured great racing throughout the field and the return of 91-year-old Pappy Powell to the race track. Walters took home the checkered flag ahead of Conyers Tim Harmon and Zebulon’s Jim Jackson, but a post-race disqualification of Harmon moved everyone up one spot allowing Senoia’s Chris Holt to move into the top three finishers.

“The track was very racy for the Bombers as we tried a different approach to the track prep and the line-up of races,” explained track promoter Mayes Massey. “We ran some of the classes feature race earlier in the night and the faster, wider tire classes after the sun went down. It worked pretty well as the track was moist and tacky for most of the night and provided a great surface for all the divisions to race.”

The experiment in race scheduling benefited the Legends Cars as the track was in perfect condition for the short wheel-based race cars. Zach Leonhardi jumped to the lead at the drop of the green as McDonough’s Dwight Pilgram, LaGrange’s Jason Treschl and Robbie Woodall of McDonough sliced and diced for the second place spot. The three chasers swapped positions back and forth throughout the fifteen lap main event with each riding the top side and bottom side trying to find their fastest route. Leonhardi would not waiver as he claimed his second win of the season ahead of Pilgram, Woodall and Treschl. Fayetteville’s John Ponzio made the charge to nab a top five.

Sam ‘Bam’ Carter was awarded the victory in the Hobby Stock after Douglasville’s Billy Smith was found to have an illegal wheel on his front running car. It was Carter’s second win of the season with both victories coming after the apparent winner had been disqualified.

Brandon Bright won his twenty-third career Mini Stock feature at Senoia Raceway as he out-duelled James ‘Showtime’ Stansell of Douglasville for the checkered flag. Griffin’s Bo Chambers was third.

The Crate Late Models will headline the show this weekend, Saturday, June 4th as Senoia Raceway offers the division a bonus payout of $1000 to the winner. The Super Late Models, Limited Late Models, B Cadets, Hobby Stocks, Mini Stocks and Bombers will be racing as well. There will also be a driver autograph session giving the fans an opportunity to meet some of the competitors prior to the main events.

The pit gates will open this Saturday at 4pm, grandstands at 5pm and hot laps will begin at 7pm with the night’s first race at 7:30pm.

Grandstand ticket prices are $12; ages 5-12 are $5; four and under are admitted for free. Access to the pit area is available for $25; ages 5-12 are $12; four and under are free. Trackside parking is available on a first come, first serve basis. Trackside parking is only accessible through the pit area and pit passes must be purchased.
