TEN DRIVERS VISIT SENOIA RACEWAY’S VICTORY LANE

SENOIA, GA (July 11) -  On a night that featured an overload of racing due to the make-up races from the previous week, ten different drivers experienced the elation of reaching Senoia Raceway’s victory lane.  There was not a single repeat winner in the field of 110 race cars that packed the pit area on Saturday night.

“There was a lot of racing,” said first time Senoia Raceway race fan Spence Marshall from Griffin.  “A lot of good racing.  My family and I just moved here from the Midwest and this was more fun than any of the tracks we went to there.  These guys really get after it.”

The night was full of side by side racing sometimes three wide and even a four wide battle during the Legends Cars second feature race.

Senoia residents filled the winner’s circle as Joe Armistead, Jr. topped the field of Super Late Models while his son Joey split the double features for the Limited Late Models with Clint ‘Cat Daddy’ Smith.  Winford Minix bested the field of Bombers.  All drivers reside in the track’s hometown.

Also picking up checkered flags on Saturday night were Winston’s Michael Page in the Crate Late Models, Milner’s Ben Wells in the Hobby Stocks and Whitesburg’s Blant Duke in the B Cadets.  Christopher Clanton of Brooks and Bubba Harry of Palmetto split the features for the Legends Cars while Villa Rica’s Todd Brewster stole the show for the Kajun Mini Stock Association.

Joe Armistead, Jr. shot out to the early lead in the Super Late Model feature with fifteen-year-old Senoia rookie Ashton Winger moving into the second place position.  The two darted around lapped traffic until lap 15 when Winger went high in turn four to pass a lapped car and hit the outside concrete wall coming to rest at the entrance to turn one.

Armistead never looked back after the restart posting his fifth win of the season ahead of Clint Smith, Fayetteville’s Ricky Williams, Alabama’s Bo Shirley and 18-year-old Matt Dooley of Brooks.

Kenny Collins of Colbert drove five hours from a rained out event in Tennessee to start scratch on the field.  He was the race’s hard charger as he passed eight cars before running out of time finishing in tenth.

After Grantville’s Austin Horton developed mechanical problems in the first feature for the Limited Late Models, Clint Smith inherited the lead and cruised to the victory.  His nearest competitor, seventeen-year-old Joey Armistead, could not muster the speed to pass the veteran driver and had to settle for second ahead of Hamilton’s Brand Lewis, Fayetteville’s Glenn Morris and Pine Mountain’s nineteen-year-old Dustin Elliott.

The tables were turned in the second feature for the Limited Late Models.  Armistead led with Smith left to chase him.  The youngster out-dueled the veteran to win his fifth of the season matching his father’s win mark in 2015 at Senoia Raceway’s bull ring.  Hamilton’s Thomas Lewis finished in third with Bowden’s Shane Criswell fourth and LaGrange’s Dusty Jones completing the top five.

The first feature for the Legends Cars was also a qualifying event for the series national championship race later this fall.  Bubba Harry and thirteen-year-old Zach Leonhardi battled for the lead position almost the entire duration with Leonahrdi getting the upper hand on lap thirteen.  As the white flag came out, Harry pulled alongside Leonhardi with Douglasville’s ‘Wild’ Will Martin making it three wide.  Harry and Leonhardi locked wheels sliding towards the inside wall forcing Martin to slow down.  Christopher Clanton hopped on the opportunity shooting past and into the lead while the leaders spun.  The caution never needed to come out as Clanton sped to the finish line ahead of Martin.  McDonough’s Dwight Pilgram was third with Villa Rica’s 72-year-old Dennis Aiken fourth and McDonough teenager Bailey Woodall fifth.

Harry was not going to let the lead go in the second feature as the former national legends cars champion led the entire race.  The race behind him was one of the most exciting of the night as drivers raced a few times four wide while jostling for position.  Another budding young star,  fourteen-year-old Joshua Hicks of Senoia, finshed in second.

Todd Brewster worked Auburn’s JJ Garrett for the first fourteen laps of the Kajun Mini Stock Association main event.  Brewster made his way past with a quick move to the inside and then went on to win the inaugural appearance of the modified four cylinder racing series at Senoia Raceway.  Tennessee’s David Hallbrooks ended up in second ahead of Commerce’s Kevin Tullis.  Arkansas’ Micah Gavin finished in fourth with Tennessee’s Michael Courtney completing the first five.  There were twenty cars representing five states in attendance.

Michael Page held off all challenges from Alabama’s Montana Dudley to win the Crate Late Model feature.  Page and Dudley stayed close to each other the entire race with Douglasville’s Matt Black not far off the pace.  Neither Dudley nor Black had enough to gain the ground and take over the lead from Page.  It was Page’s second win at Senoia Raceway this year, but the first in his crate engine powered race car.

Ben Wells dominated the caution-filled Hobby Stock feature.  Wells held off a late charge by Newnan’s Scott Sherrer to win his second of the year.  Franklin’s Chris Steele continues to be winless at Senoia Raceway this season posting a third place finish.

Blant Duke was never seriously challenged in the B Cadet race as he posted the victory over Alabama’s Marc Gooden.  LaGrange teenager Jake Traylor gained the most positions finishing in third with Alabama seventeen-year-old Dylan Holmes notching a fourth place finish in his first visit to the bull ring.  Point’s leader Parrish Duncan of Newnan completed the first five finishers.

The newly created Chevrolet Performance 525 Series is scheduled to visit Senoia Raceway this Saturday, July 18th.  The series point’s leader the ‘Chattanooga Flash’ Ronnie Johnson leads a stellar field into the bull ring for the $3000 to win special event.  This will be the first time since 1984 that dirt racing hall of famer Johnson will compete at Senoia Raceway.  His last appearance was during a Southern All-Stars race that was won by Leon Sells.

The pit gates will open this Saturday at 4pm, grandstands at 5pm and hot laps will begin at 7pm and the night’s first race at 7:30pm.

This week’s Chevrolet Performance 525 Series special grandstand ticket prices are $15; ages 5-12 are $5; four and under are admitted for free.  Access to the pit area is available for $25; ages 5-12 are $12; four and under are free. Trackside parking is available on a first come, first serve basis.  Trackside parking is only accessible through the pit area and pit passes must be purchased.  Pit passes will be $30; kids age 5-12 are $15; four & under are free.
