Inaugural class on Wall of Fame inducted at Elkins Raceway

KERENS, WV (August 14) - What started off as an idea from Jimmy Henry. Pitched to Pete Secret. Then to Elkins track officials. The ball got rolling this past spring as the ’wall’ was built. Next, an eight anonymous person panel nominated fifteen names they deemed worthy of placement onto the “wall’ The field was narrowed to ten, and that was the 2015 inaugural class of the Wall of Fame, inducted Friday night before racing action.

R H “Dick” Armstrong, Denny Chamberlain, L J Dennis, Red Fredrick, Keith Hamner, Dave Harold, Bernard Keene, Bood Lodge, Gene Lodge, and Richard Skidmore are now embossed on the Elkins Raceway Wall of Fame.

Many more ’old timer’s, drivers, promoters, announcers, writers, car owners, sponsors, too numerous to mention were in attendance for the event. Although they finished their meal, on Old Timers night back on June 19, rain cut short the activities. It was brought back in conjuncture with the induction. Plus a candy rush for the kids sponsored by Mountaineer Insurance. And racing on the slate as well.

There were two scary moments Friday. Bill VanDeVander was involved in a wreck in the Modified finale, as he was briefly knocked out. Thankfully Bill was ok. In the Mini Mod feature Colby Hutton rolled his kart, and again, thankfully he was ok.

In the Jenkins Ford Super Late Models, Bob Gordon and Shane Hitt collected prelim honors. Three early yellows, laps two, four and seven, slowed Gordon, but that was all. Gordon driving the Kevin Roy Trucking / BB & T Auto Wreckers #31 would lead flag to flag for his first win since July 4, 2014. Hitt gave chase but had to settle for second. Dusty Hamrick, Chuck Harper, and Skip Hare would complete the top five.

On the second try at green, the Budweiser FASTRAK Late Models saw Billy Beachler emerge as the front runner. Kris Southern was running second, when on lap six he pushed in turn four and dropped to sixth. Then Southern pushed in turn two dropping him near the tail. Now with point leader, Daniel Hill trying to close the gap, Beachler was unfazed. The Cecil B Arthur General Contracting / Kowalsky Machine #21 would sit in victory circle for the second time in three weeks. Hill added to his point lead by finishing second. Garrett Paugh was third. Derrick Shaw and Chad Green rounded out the top five.

Stop us if you have heard this one before. Dave Defibaugh takes lead in the Performance Motors Modifieds. Brent Trimble starts sixth. Lap four Trimble moves to third. Lap seven, second. At the half way mark, Defibaugh and Trimble are side by side. Have we told you this before? The front two battle tooth and nail. Lap nine Trimble takes front spot. The H & R Block / Diamond Chassis #1B adds his eleventh checkerboard to the wall. Defibaugh again crossed in second. Jeff Fornash, Randy Bohan, and James Nelson were third through fifth.

In the West Virginia Pools Street Stocks, John Tallman used his front row starting spot to his advantage and jumped to the point at the drop of the green. Tallman stayed there wire to wire unchallenged. He placed the Pennington Motorsports / John Tallman Sr. #37 in victory lane for the third time this season. Completing the top five were, Anthony Arbogast, Chad Judy, Jamie Keene, and Josh Rovello.

The Miller’s Used Cars Mod Lites ran a feature only. Logan Hitt driving the Odyssey Rehabilitation / Jenkins Ford #2* would capture his second win of the year. John Cogar Sr., Mitch Ward and Dean Ward finished the order.

When it was all said and done, Paije Bragg in her John Watson Trucking / Taylor Construction #8 closed the gap on BCT Construction Mini Mod group A point leader Garret Jones who finished second. Wayne Bonner was third, Haley Mahoney was fourth and Ryan Hare was fifth.

While the Extreme Plastics / Shalewater Solutions #99 of Presley Wilt added to her outstanding season with win number five. George Casto III, Blake Runyon, Abbie Hudler - Pennington, and Madison Taylor filled out the top five.

This week will be Season Championship night with double points!!! Come on out and root on your favorite driver, as double points can make you or break you! See who will be crowned 2015 class CHAMPIONS! Regular racing coming August 28.
