Title: Carolina Clash at Lancaster Speedway - 3/19 Results Post by LMR on 03/19/16 at 9:50pm Carolina Clash Super Late Model Series Lancaster Speedway March 19, 2016 __________________________________________________________ Ross Bailes Goes Back-to-Back in Carolina Clash at Lancaster by Mark Huey LANCASTER, SC (March 19) - As forecasted throughout much of the week, Saturday's weather included a threat for rain. The models were very consistent on the fact that it would rain. When and how much? That was a different story. For the teams of the Carolina Clash Super Late Model Series last night, the rain was not the problem. It was the brewing storm that most don't see coming until it is too late. Many cars fell victim to mechanical problems, overheating engines, tire failures as such that only five cars were running at the conclusion of the event. Chris Madden set a new track record with a qualifying speed of 18.219. Ben Watkins, the former track record holder, broke his old track record of 18.329 with a fast time of 18.289. Ross Bailes hit the wall on his second lap of qualifying after setting a first lap time of 18.487. That was among the fastest first lap times. Who knows what speed lap two might have been, but so much momentum into one of the scariest dirt track turns in the country - turn three at Lancaster - proved near disastrous for Bailes. His car clung to the wall and stopped and had to be towed in. After fierce repairs were made during the down-time, Bailes was able to start the main in fourth. Doug Sanders, Kevin Wilson, Timbo Mangum were among early resignations from the event, all before lap 2 was officially scored. Donald Bradsher retired from the event on lap 12 after enduring a red-flag altercation with G.R. Smith, who before the incident crashed his #22* machine after hitting the wall in turn three. A brief fireball erupted from beneath the car as it careened into the air, nearly flipping end-over-end. He was able to walk away from the accident, but confronted Bradsher while he was sitting in his car under red-flag. Smith was disqualified from the event for his actions and will face a two-race suspension as a penalty enforced by the series on Tuesday afternoon. Once the long process of removing Smith's car (had to be towed into the pits by two wreckers) was completed, the officials were in a race against the impending rain that eventually fell, just three minutes after the checkers fell. Ben Watkins, Josh Langley, Brett Hamm, Chris Madden and Anthony Sanders had all fallen out of the event with mechanical problems by lap 33, with Madden relinquishing the lead to Bailes on lap 27. On the final approach to the white flag lap, Johnny Pursley slowed to a stop in turn four and retired with two laps to go. Bailes went on to lead the final two laps and captured the win. Dean Bowen of Whiteville, NC eventually survived the event and landed in second place for the second straight week, earning the event's Hard Charger bonus points. Chris Ferguson rebounded from a flat tire to finish third and Ricky Weeks finished fourth ahead of Tim Allen.
