SUPER LATE MODELS RETURN TO WAYCROSS MOTOR SPEEDWAY IN 'BATTLE of the SWAMP' THIS WEEKEND
Historic Half-Mile Waycross Motor Speedway Set to Host Huge Stock Car Weekend Featuring America’s All-Time Top Short Track Racers

(May 5, 2010) WAYCROSS, GEORGIA Big time short track racing will return to South Georgia this week (May 6-8) as Waycross Motor Speedway plays hosts to one of the biggest super late model dirt car racing events in the nearly 60 year history of the famed half-mile oval located at the edge of the vast Okefenokee Swamp. Some of the biggest guns in the American short track industry will be in the mix battling for the lucrative purses which will feature Super Late Models, while also hosting competitors in supporting divisions as part of the big money racing weekend. Some of the nation’s all-time winning dirt late model aces will be in action this weekend at Waycross led by a pair of former multi-time national champions Scott Bloomquist of Mooresburg, Tennessee and Billy Moyer of Batesville, Arkansas. Joining Bloomquist and Moyer in the Battle of the Swamp will be former Southern All-Stars Champions Chris Madden (Gray Court, South Carolina); Ivedent Lloyd (Ocala, Florida) and Randy Weaver (Crossville, Tennessee). Former multi-time Southern All-Stars East champ Casey Roberts of Toccoa, Georgia and former two-time Tennessee Thunder Series Champion Rick Rogers of Knoxville, Tennessee will be in the Battle of the Swamp as they head to Waycross for this week’s big money racing. Other heavy hitters who will be at Waycross Motor Speedway this weekend include Jonathan Davenport (Blairsville, GA); Tyler Ivey (Tallahassee, FL); hard charging Bub McCool (Vicksburg, MS) and Tennessee’s April Farmer as she duels with the dudes on the dirt. Racing brothers Ben and Jeremy Faircloth (Swainsboro, GA) will be joined by fellow Georgia hot shoes Royce Bray (Athens), Chesley Dixon (Swainsboro), Jeff Fortner (Vidalia), Mike Nasworthy (Macon), Brent Dixon (Elberton) and Russell Brown Jr. (Lake Park) among others who will go at it this weekend at Waycross Motor Speedway.

The event, sponsored in part by Walker-Jones Chevrolet-Buick-Honda-Toyota-Scion of Waycross, takes the green flag this Thursday night (May 6) with a special Pure Stock ‘Thursday Night Thunder’ feature event, as well as open practice sessions for all racecars. This weekend will mark the first time that the Super Late Models have raced at Waycross Motor Speedway in nearly ten years. The lightning fast dirt track has a long history dating over half a century when the big half-mile racing oval saw legendary battles involving some of the sports' toughest competitors at the time. Waycross Motor Speedway is the oldest active racing oval in the state of Georgia with racing at the facility dating back to 1951. The upcoming May 6-8 racing action will reignite those glory days as 900 horse powered super late models make their return to the new look Waycross Motor Speedway which has recently been reconstructed with a Georgia red clay surface. In addition to the lineup of all-star racers on the track, other dirt late model legends will be in attendance for the Battle of the Swamp, including Hall of Fame drivers Larry Moore, Mike Head and Eddie MacDonald Sr. One other special racing hero will be a part of the weekend of racing as legendary short-track veteran Rance Phillips will be honored and serve as the Grand Marshall of the Battle of the Swamp. Phillips is one of the all-time win leaders in south Georgia and north Florida racing history and during his racing career also put in many years of service at Walker-Jones Chevrolet in the 1960’s and 70’s for the respected automotive dealership in Waycross, Georgia.

The stars of the super late model racing world will compete on the Friday night (May 7) portion of the weekend in time-trial qualifications and feature qualifying heat races in preparation for the weekend's main event, a 50-lap feature paying the winner $10,000. Also on Friday night a strong contingent of regional Limited Late Models is expected to battle in the first of their weekend double-header with a 25-lap feature paying the winner $2,500.00. The Super Street division will race in a feature event on Friday evening as well.

On Saturday night (May 8th) the Super Late Models will take the green flag with last-chance consolation qualifying races on tap to fill the balance of the field for the weekend's main event, the 50-lap feature paying the winner $10,000.00. The final night of action will see the Limited Late Models back in action for a second night battling in a 30-lap, $3,000.00 to win feature, the Limited Sportsman in a $1,000.00 to win feature as well as a Pure Stock feature race.

As part of a special Fan Appreciation portion of 'The Battle of the Swamp' two fans will receive the opportunity of coming to the green flag in a pair of two-seat racecars as part of the field for the main event on Saturday night. Race fans have the opportunity to register for their chance to take the Saturday night Racing Ride of a Lifetime by stopping in at Walker-Jones Chevrolet-Buick-Honda-Toyota-Scion on US Hwy 1 South in Waycross, Georgia through Thursday evening at 6:00 pm in order to be eligible for the special ride of a lifetime on Saturday night.
