SKIPPER TAKES CARE OF S.R.R.S CASTAWAY's: ARP WINS BOYD's
Steve Hixson
Chattanooga/Ringgold (5/7/10) --- The SKIPPER Skip Arp of nearby Georgetown, Tennessee was the class of the field Friday night for the 2nd Annual "MAYHEM SHORTY 40" Southern Regional Racing Series presented by PPM Racing Products. At racetime thirty-three (33) Super Late Models from TN, GA, AL and NC had signed in for the $3,000 to-WIN, 40 lap event. Early on Arp seemed to be the dominant racer as the #31 "Stanley Best Heating & Air, Curtis Equipment Sales, Skip Arp Performance, Mid-Nite Oil Racing Fuels, Merriman Excavating" sponsored GRT / Smith-built Spec Motor powered racecar, set early fast time during PRECISION PRODUCTS INC. time trials. Arp's 14:104 wouldn't stand as the MILKMAN Mike Weeks backed-up his earlier season fast lap setting a 13:963 in his # 22 "West Haven Speed Equipment" sponosored Trakstar / Race Engine Design powered racecar.
Qualifying locked-in the Top 3 from each Group, so... behind Weeks and Arp were; Ray Cook & Anthony Burroughs, Derek Ellis & Mark Vineyard, Brett Wyatt & Ronnie Johnson and current S.R.R.S points leader Jacob Grizzle, Three (3) Last Chance races would take to the track, setting the remaining transferees for the A-Main feature. In B-Main #1 Jake Knowles piloting the #66 "CarSmart Auto Sales, Cleveland Speedway Driving School, Cruise with the Champions" MasterSbilt / R.E.D machine would take the win. Thus earning him the 10th overall starting position next to Grizzle. Josh Putnam would win B-Main #2, while ROCKETBOY Tommy Kerr would make up, row 6 for the feature, winning the 3rd and final B-Main in the #4T "Blount Excavating, Explosive Specialists, Arnold Trucking" sponsored Rocket / Custom Race Engines machine. Using S.R.R.S provisionals were a pair of Middle TN racers; 2009 series champ Jay Brinkley and Steven Ashby.
With a late start time the field staged quickly on the front straight-away. Weeks and Arp would bring the field to green only to have a lap 1 caution when the field became stacked as Skylar Marlar, Freddy and Jeff (of no relation) Smith, Mike Tinker and Rick Hixson all got tangled up. As the field took a lap 1 restart, Arp was in the lead with Weeks, Cook (who'd just won the Crate LM feature), Grizzle and Vineyard following. All that would quickly change when, just after a minimal lap 3 caution, Weeks would stack the field, this time, on the front straight-away. With the FQ outta the picture, as well as Putnam, the field began to unravel. Try after try to get consecutive green flags failed as yellows seem prominant. With almost ten (10) racecars out by lap 10 it would be Arp, Cook, Burroughs, Ronnie Johnson with Kerr coming fast from his 12th starting spot.
Burroughs would end his Top 5 run as RJ would bring out a caution in turn 2. ROCKETBOY would make quick work of Grizzle and Jake Knowles on the restart before settling in behind Cook for 3rd. Scott Creel and Tony Morris' runs would end prematurely as the SKIPPER kept the lead with Cook drifting between 2 and 4 car lengths back. The Top 3 (31-53-4T) would dance for about 20 circuits off & on as Marlar and Todd Morrow would designate yellow periods along with a struggling RJ. The races final yellow would appear just 4-laps from the finish, allowing Cook & Kerr to keen up on the wheel for one-last attempt on Arp. Grizzle in the #99G "Rick's Rentals, Kate's Marathon" sponsored MasterSbilt / Brown Engineering racecar and Knowles duked it out for 5th just ahead of Brinkley, Jamie Perry and a hard chargin Johnson.
Cook in the # 53 "Arvil Cook Property Investments, D&R Motorsports, Angie Hickson Contracting, A+ Moving & Storage" MasterSbilt / R.E.D ride would be 2nd as Arp headed to Jody Millard Pest Control victory lane. "We had a really good car all-night" stated Arp, catching his breathe after climbing from the racecar. Thanking his sponsors he stated that the new Spec Motor (from Stealth Carburators) made the difference. "I've never been a fan of the Spec, but tonight Tony and the guys convinced me. If it weren't for them we wouldn't be here for sure." Unfortunately the A-Hobby and FWD divisions didn't get to race, due to time restraints (curfew), so those two divisions will run for double purse, next Friday night (May 14th) at Boyd's Speedway.
