Competition Beginning to Heat up in the FASTRAK City Chevrolet Weekly Racing Series

Carnesville, Ga. (May 20, 2010) - As the spring weather continues to heat up, so does the competition in the FASTRAK City Chevrolet Weekly Racing Series.

Just seven weeks into the 2010 season and some familiar drivers are already making their presence known, while some new faces have also emerged as potential contenders for the $10,000 check that awaits the 2010 national champion.

David Smith of Inman, S.C., has been virtually unstoppable during the opening weeks, winning seven of the 12 series races he has entered. Four of his wins have come at Buffalo Speedway (SC). The other three have come at Travelers Rest Speedway (SC).

The early success has allowed Smith to build a 91-point lead over his closest competitor, Travis Blackwell of Lyman, S.C. That lead may seem insurmountable, but it will dwindle quickly once drivers begin to reach the 15-race mark and start dropping their lowest-point finishes.

Blake Bentley of Duncan, S.C., sits in the third position with two wins in 10 starts. Bentley also leads the series’ rookie of the year standings. The 2010 season is the first year a rookie of the year will be crowned, with the top rookie in the final national standings receiving $1,000. Second will receive $500 and third will receive $250.

Jonathan Taylor of Toccoa, Ga., who has scored a win at both Lavonia Speedway (GA) and Toccoa Speedway (GA) is the second highest rookie in the current standings. Ricky Meglaye of Youngwood, Pa., is the third highest with two victories at Roaring Knob Motorsport Complex (PA).

Cranberry Township, Pa., resident Mike Pegher Jr. is currently fourth in the City Chevrolet Weekly Series standings. Pegher has won two races at Pittsburgh Pennsylvania Motor Speedway and a third at Tri-City Speedway (PA).

Rounding out the top five is 2008 City Chevrolet Weekly Racing Series champion Max Blair of Centerville, Pa. In seven starts, Blair has scored five wins at four different tracks.

Some other drivers to watch as the season progresses include 2008 FASTRAK Grand Nationals champion Royce Bray of Hull, Ga., who has three wins in five starts this season and defending City Chevrolet Weekly Series champion AJ Diemel of Bonduel, Wis., who has won two out of three starts this year at Shawano Speedway.

Winky McGee of Pilot Mountain, N.C., and Steve Davis of Manville, N.J., have also had strong starts to the season, each scoring four wins in five starts. McGee’s victories have come at Rolling Thunder Speedway (VA) while Davis’s have come at New Egypt Speedway (NJ).
