Chris Ferguson Caps Off Season Runner up at 20th Annual Blue Grey 100 Mt. Holly, North Carolina – Chris Ferguson and his Starrette Trucking and Specialized Hauling Race Team made their way to the familiar confines of Cherokee Speedway in nearby Gaffney, S.C. The Southern All Stars East sanctioned event, a 100 lapper paying $10,000 to win, marked Ferguson’s first 100 lap main event of the year.
Ferguson started the day off slow after posting a 14th place qualifying effort. This placed him starting 4th in the highly competitive heat race consisting of drivers Chris Madden, Johnny Pursley, Casey Roberts, Randy Weaver and Dennis Erb Jr. Ferguson managed to advance to 3rd position in his 8 lap heat race which placed him starting 11th in the main event.
At the start of the 100 lap race Ferguson began advancing through the field slowly but surely utilizing the low groove while trying to conserve tires. Pit strategy was the talk of the pit area before the race but Ferguson’s crew chief Bryan Conard made the call to go hard on tires and try to make all 100 laps without pitting for tires. Ferguson managed to conserve his tires but still make his way up to the 6th position by the half way marker. Ferguson then began his assault on the top 5 with 30 laps to go. A late caution with 24 laps to go placed the Starrette Trucking house car pilot on the outside of 2nd place runner and World of Outlaws regular Clint Smith during a Delaware double file restart. Ferguson took advantage of this opportunity by using the outside momentum to power around Clint Smith and close in on leader Chris Madden. However Ferguson’s late race charge came up one spot short at the finish line.
The 20th Annual Blue Grey 100 marked the end of Chris Ferguson’s 2010 season. Ferguson stated “This is really good way to end the year for me and my team. I know a win would have been nice but second place after starting where we did and running against the competition that was here tonight, is a great accomplishment.” Ferguson added “2010 has been an up and down year for us, we’ve won our biggest career race, lost a couple big races, but all in all, it’s been a great learning curve for us.” After the passing of car owner Jack Starrette, Ferguson carried a special paint scheme the rest of the year in his memory. Ferguson had this to say about car owner Jack Starrette, “It was an honor to drive for Mr. Starrette and get to know him and his family. I have been blessed to have been able to know and become not only a driver for Mr. Jack, but more importantly a friend.” Chris would like to thank Jack’s son Roger for continuing his father’s passion and continuing to support Ferguson’s racing career.
