John Garvin Jr. Competes in Florida DirtCar Nationals at Volusia

Sarver, PA (February 21, 2011) 2010 O’Reilly All Star Late Model Series Rookie of the Year John Garvin Jr. and Copperhead Racing opened their 2011 season last week at Ocala Speedway in Ocala, FL for an $8,000 to-win UMP sanctioned event and at Volusia Speedway Park in Barberville, FL for the 40th Annual Florida DirtCar Nationals presented by UNOH.

‘Copperhead’ used a third place finish in his heat race to transfer him to the feature event at the season opening ‘Battle Between the Coasts’ at Ocala Speedway, but rough track conditions forced John to end his night early in the A-Main. ‘It was wild out there, that’s for sure,’ Garvin said about his 15th place finish at Ocala. ‘We still had a six nights of racing to go over at Volusia so I thought it was best to pull off during the first caution. We weren’t gaining any positions and I didn’t want to tear anything up the first night out.’

Garvin hoped that his strong run at Ocala would carry over to Volusia Speedway Park but it was more of a learning trip for John and team as they kept their expectations reasonable for the week. 'We learned as much as we could while we were down there,' said John. 'I knew we weren't going to go down there and set the world on fire, this was a learning trip for us so we're happy with the information that we've been able to soak in while there. We were hoping to at least make a show but we were more worried about learning as much as we could.' Garvin was unable to qualify for an A-Main event while at Volusia but believes he will be a better racer because of the trip. ‘The competition down there is unreal so even though I’m behind those guys, I’m out there learning. I’m learning my car and I’m behind them watching the lines that they run and their different marks on the track. It was definitely a beneficial trip for me and the guys.’

John Garvin Jr. and his Copperhead Racing team will kick off the year closer to home on Friday, March 25 at Lernerville Speedway in Sarver, PA for their season opening event. The next night Garvin will help open up Mercer Raceway Park in Mercer, PA for the $3,000 to-win, UFO sanctioned ‘Chiller Thriller’.
