Knaub Claims Late Model Victory at SSP on Saturday Night
Newberrytown, PA (April 23, 2011) – On Saturday night, April 23, Dover’s Gene Knaub won the 25-lap Late Model feature at the Susquehanna Speedway Park. Dan Zechman of Hanover claimed the Street Stock 20-lapper with Dover’s Matt Wampler victorious in the Xtreme Stock Car main event. Daryl Sipe of York Haven won the Road Warrior feature and Scott Gobrecht of New Oxford won the 15-lap non-stop Legends Cars feature.
In Late Model action, polesitter Jason Rochelle and Randy Christine Jr. brought the field to the green with Rochelle grabbing the early lead after two complete restarts. The first caution of the race saw Chase Billet rolling over on his roof and escaped uninjured after a multi-car accident. When racing finally resumed, Gene Knaub took the lead from Rochelle on the third circuit. Rochelle continued to follow Knaub but was unable to regain the lead. At the end, Knaub claimed his first SSP victory of the year followed by Rochelle and Christine. Justin Ehrhart and Carl Billet rounded out the top five. D.J. Mease and his brother Travis finished sixth and seventh respectively, followed by Chaz Walls, Chris Knopp and Bob Minnich rounding out the top ten. Alex Updegraff, Knaub and Christine were the heat race winners.
The 20-lap Street Stock feature saw polesitter Scott Thunberg taking the early lead unti the fourth circuit when Dan Zechman moved by to take the top spot. Among numerous cautions, Dan Zechamn and Doug Bennet put on a great battle for the top spot with Bennett leading laps 13 and 18. Dan Zechman led the most important lap, the final one to claim the Street Stock feature victory. Bennett settled for second followed by 2010 SSP track champion, Randy Zechman. Matt Wampler and Sam Rial rounded out the top five. Thunberg, Lemmon and Dan Zechman were heat race victors.
The 20-lap Xtreme Stock Car feature event began with Cameron Benyou leading the first five laps of the race. Matt Wampler took command of the race on the sixth circuit. Patrick McClane then began to stalk Wampler setting him up coming off the fourth turn of the final lap. Coming of the turn, Wampler and McClane made contact as both continued to the finish line in the right direction. At the line, Wampler edged McClane followed by Benyou in third. Davey Nester and J.R. Rodriguez rounded out the top five. Benyou and Wampler won their respective heat races.
Daryl Sipe led from start to finish to pick up the Road Warrior feature victory. Cory Weishaar charged from sixth to finish second, followed by Robert Fryberger, Brian Lefebvre and Jeff Svendsen. Weishaar won the heat race.
In a non-stop 15 lapper for the Legends Cars, Chad Glatfelter, Scott Gobrecht, Lucas Montgomery and Tim Henry swapped the top four spots throughout the race. Glatfelter led laps 1 and 4 with Henry crossing the line first on laps 2 and 3. Gobrecht took the lead on the final circuit and never looked back with the wild battle behind him for the next three spots. At the end, Gobrecht took the win over Henry, Montgomery and Glatfelter. Bill Diehl finished in fifth. The brothers, Blaine and Harlon Leppo each won their qualifying heat races.
Racing action returns to the SSP Outback Track on Friday night, April 29 at 7:30 p.m. featuring quarter midgets, karts, Adult Speedcar and lawnmower racing action.
Racing action returns to the Big Track at SSP on Saturday night, April 30 with the Late Models, Street Stocks, Xtreme Stock Cars, Mini Vans and Classic Cars.
Saturday will also be the “Hometown Heroes” night featuring the towns of Etters, Lewisberry and New Cumberland. Before the races begin, the drivers from those hometowns will have the opportunity to display their cars and meet the fans at the front gate of the speedway. The drivers will also be interviewed during the night’s racing program. Also, all fans entering the speedway from that driver’s hometown being honored will be admitted FREE to the grandstands by showing proper photo identification and filling out an information card at the ticket booth.
