Lowdown on the Showdown in Sarvertown: The Countdown

The Lowdown on the Showdown in Sarvertown
Garrett Krummert is ready to be a factor!
Sarver, PA (April 25, 2011) The first big Late Model race of the season is upon us as the All Star Late Model Series is set to invade the Action Track this Friday, April 29 for the $5,000-to-win Showdown in Sarvertown. Originally sanctioned as a World of Outlaws Late Model Series race in early spring, the Showdown in Sarvertown nickname was transferred to the All Star’s spring race last season due to the expansion of the Firecracker 100 as a three-day World of Outlaws sanctioned Mega-Event.
The All Star Late Model Series is a regional touring series and features a lot of the biggest stars in Fab Four Racing. One of the fastest rising stars in the local Late Model scene is Garrett Krummert. Krummert cut his teeth in the Small Block Modifieds at Mercer Raceway Park where he won four features. Two seasons ago, he debuted as the first driver of the KGR #43 sprint car owned by Kelsey George. Last season he hit the triple play by joining the Super Late Model ranks full time. Now in his second full season in a full-fendered racecar, Krummert is ready to make a splash this weekend at the Showdown in Sarvertown against the region’s top late model drivers!
While it may seem crazy to switch into what is arguably the most competitive division in the area, Krummert is confident that he’s finally found a home in the Super Late Model ranks, “The Late Model deal is the way to go right now,” stated Krummert. “There are about 12 tracks in a two hour radius we can run; we feel very comfortable with the super late model deal. Right now we’re just trying to log laps and figure this deal out.”
“Figuring the deal out” is a huge part of the equation in a big event like the Showdown in Sarvertown, as the All Stars use a time trial format as opposed to the weekly pill draw for heat race lineups. Of the big event format, Krummert remarked, “Time trial shows put a lot of pressure on a driver and crew early on in the night. A bad qualifying run can put you behind for the rest of the night. Our strategy is to go out and try to cut a good lap to set us up for a good run in the heat race, then hopefully the Showdown in Sarvertown A-Main.”
With the local weather cutting in to the shakedown time of the season, Krummert made the tow out to Attica Raceway Park two weeks ago to get some seat time and run with the talented UMP/DIRTcar Late Models in Western OH. In his first laps on the track, Garrett won his heat race! And while he only finished 15th in the feature, the seat time was invaluable!
Racing “at home”, as Krummert found out during the feature at Attica, has its advantages. “We have a better idea what the track surface will do here, as well as the confidence that goes along with running on a track that you’re comfortable at!” And while the team is more comfortable at the Action Track, Garrett is keeping his expectations realistic, “Winning a big race at Lernerville would be huge for us, but right now we’ll be happy to just make the feature!”
Garrett drives a family owned Rocket Chassis powered by a Rider Racing Engine. Ryan Haney serves as the crew chief, leading crew members Jo, Amy and Gabrielle. 2011 sponsors on the Krummert #29 are Pro Shot Directional Boring, McElwain Motors, Approved Toilet Rentals, Showtime Designs, Turbo Start Racing Batteries and Krummert Automotive.
The Friday Night’s Showdown in Sarvertown featuring the All Star Late Model Series, will set the stage for the upcoming 5th Annual Firecracker 100 presented GottaRace.com in late June. With 50 laps and $5,000 on the line, a loaded field of Late Model drivers is expected and at just $20 for adult general admission, the bang for your buck is unmatched! Seniors tickets are $18, students (11-17 years old) are just $15 and, as always, kids 10 & under are FREE! Gates open at 5:00, with hot laps set for 7:00, followed by time trials. The DIRTcar Pro Late Models and UMP Modifieds are also on the Showdown in Sarvertown card.

The Lowdown on the Showdown in Sarvertown
Dave Hess Jr. looking for rare Double Victory
Sarver, PA (April 25, 2011) As we continue to look forward to the $5,000-to-win Showdown in Sarvertown featuring the All Star Late Model Series at the Action Track this Friday, April 29 by profiling some of the stars of what promises to be a loaded field of the finest Late Model drivers in the region, Dave Hess Jr. once again comes face-to-face with Lernerville Speedway history.
Last summer, Hess made history by claiming the 2010 Budweiser Track Championship in the Precise Racing Products DIRTcar Late Models. In doing so, he and his father joined an elite group of father/son Track Champions. This Friday, April 29, Hess will try to become one of an elite few drivers to accomplish the impressive feat; a list which includes Hall of Famers Bob Wearing Sr., Lou Blaney and Dick Swartzlander and most recently David Scott during the 2000 season.
Hess is certainly no stranger to Sheetz Victory Lane, with multiple wins in both divisions, including three in the Late Model and one in the UMP Mod last year. But doing so on the same night would be an historic accomplishment!
Hess nearly achieved it last year during this same event, as he won the UMP Modified feature, after finishing second in the All Star A-Main behind Robbie Blair. “I think it also puts more pressure on me to compete because of the caliber of racers that show up. We try as hard as we can to win every week, but special shows add some more pressure to do well.” Hess continued, “Winning the All Star race at Lernerville would be really good for my career. Being so close last year, with a second place finish, puts a little more pressure on me this year to win; knowing I was so close last year!”
Running two cars in one night can also create more pressure as it presents interesting challenges, especially during a big event which includes time trials for the All Star Late Models, but Hess takes it all in stride, “Lernerville is definitely the type of track that experience and track time pay off. We don’t really have much of a different routine; we just make sure the cars are as good as they can be early because the first laps could be the most important of the night.”
With $5,000 on the line for the Showdown in Sarvertown and history in the making, Hess will certainly have his elbows up and right foot deep into the gas all night long!
Hess drives a family owned Rocket Chassis powered by a Craiger Race Engine. Crew members include 1980/1983 Late Model Track Champion Dave Hess Sr., Jimmy, Mark, Mike and Geoff. 2011 sponsors on Hess’s #44 are Hess Garage & Salvage, Linda’s Notary Service, Plyler Overhead Door, Beacon Lubricants, Jim Brozell Construction, Matt Teribery Flooring, Collision World, Genesis Shocks, Hoosier Tire, Fast Shafts, Simpson Race Products, Kinder Motorsports Media, MWB Graphics &Web Design, Koldrock, VP Race Fuels, Valken Wheels.

The Lowdown on the Showdown in Sarvertown
2009 WoO LMS RoY Russell King is eager to make a $5,000 statement
Sarver, PA (April 26, 2011) Russell King has spent most of the past two summers traveling the country with and learning from the best late model drivers on the planet. Despite scaling back his travel plans for the 2011 season, King is eager to apply what he was learned on the road with the World of Outlaws Late Model Series and become a more frequent visitor to Victory Lane.
King, of course, cut his teeth in the Big Block Modifieds where his dad, Rex King Sr. is one of the pre-eminent stars in the region. Russell started his foray into Late Models three seasons ago and got a true “baptism by fire” in 2009 by hitting the road with the World of Outlaws Late Model Series. And while not a tour series win, King scored his first big payday ($12,000) that season at McKean County Speedway. He also went on to win the 2009 WoO LMS Rookie of the Year Award.
2010 was a rough one for King as he retraced his steps on the grueling tour, but struggled with chassis issues before hooking up with Late Model setup guru Robbie Allen. Still, King plans to spend more time closer to home in 2011 and focus on the higher paying races in the Western PA/Eastern OH region mixed with some travelling to bigger shows around the country.
King certainly looked stout in his 2011 area debut as he was elbows up and moving through the field on Opening Night before slamming into a car that was stopped in turns three and four. King always takes an aggressive approach whether it’s a Fab Four Friday Night or the $5,000-to-win Showdown in Sarvertown with the All Stars, “We run our hardest every show no matter what! Everyone is so up on the wheel now, you can’t be lazy.”
With both a wealth of experience on the road at different tracks all over the country and countless laps at Lernerville Speedway, King feels very confident headed into the Showdown in Sarvertown, “I think we got a pretty good handle on our car this year and what to do for different conditions. Anyone can go fast when it’s wide open fast, but we’ve had some problems in the past at Lernerville when the track slicks off and slows down. But after Opening Night I think we figured something out and should be in good shape for the 50-lapper. It would be a pretty big win! I've never won at Lernerville, (not even in a modified), so to get that done would be cool for sure!”
King drives a family owned Rocket Chassis powered by a Custon Race Engines. 2011 sponsors include King Bros. Readymix concrete, Essroc Italcementi Group, Hoosier Racing Tires, Integra Racing Shocks, VP Racefuels, Frankland Rearends, Shaeffers Oil , Keizer Wheels and Hog Head Nation. He’d also like to thank his mom, dad, grandma and, (in his words), “my beautiful fiancé Ashley and most of all the haters out there!”

The Lowdown on the Showdown in Sarvertown
Asphalt Convert Tommy Beck excited for Showdown in Sarvertown
Sarver, PA (April 27, 2011) Tommy Beck is no stranger to Late Model Racing, no stranger to winning races and no stranger to Lernerville Speedway. He is, however, a stranger to all three aspects combined. But that will not stop him from making a strong showing at the Showdown in Sarvertown featuring the All Star Late Model Series this Friday, April 29 at the Action Track!
Tommy Beck made his Lernerville Speedway debut on Opening Night and was on his way to the front when he was rear-ended by another driver in the frenetic action of the Precise Racing Products DIRTcar Late Model Feature. The contact resulted in a shredded tire, then as Tommy slowed in turns three & four he was plowed into by another driver, effectively ending his night.
Beck and his team learned a lot despite the early exit and are primed for a solid run in the Showdown in Sarvertown this Friday, April 29. Beck stated, “As I'm starting my first season focusing on the dirt late model, races such as the Showdown in Sarvertown are a great opportunity to run for an increased purse and see how I stack-up to some of the best regional teams.”
When asked how his experience on pavement, (where time trials are a regular part of the weekly shows), transfers to Dirt Late Model racing and more specifically this weekend’s All Star Late Model event, Beck commented, “On the asphalt it was a whole different ball game due to the confidence level. I feel our team was at a point that we could compete for the win anywhere we went regardless of the competition on hand. With series such as the All Stars/Outlaws it's a new territory for me and, as I'm still getting my feet wet I, don't really know where I stand on a given night with the remarkable amount of competition in these series.”
He went on to explain, “I'll typically run tires and set up similar to a heat race and try to run the best lap I can. On a multi-groove track with a quality racing surface like Lernerville a good qualifying effort doesn't necessarily guarantee a quality starting spot in the main event. The heat races are just as critical and make a great show for the fans as it's possible to have a poor time trial and still finish up front in the heat.”
And while he’s new to Action Track competition, Tommy literally grew up at the Speedway. “I've been attending races at the track since I was three months old. Until I started running asphalt regularly when I was 15, I spent every Friday night cheering on my grandfather’s late model and playing matchbox cars under the bleachers in turn one. Any win at Lernerville would be big for me, but a race such as the Showdown in Sarvertown would be extra special!”
Beck drives a Rocket Chassis owned by his mother Ginger and powered by a Draime Racing Engine. Crew members include his parents Tom & Ginger, Doug Beck and new crew member Paul Walters. 2011 sponsors include Delmont Instant Oil Change, Diamond Shine Janitorial Services, Stan’s Transmission, Rocket Chassis and Hoosier Tire.
