Williams two for two in early season action at Potomac Speedway

By Doug Watson
Budds Creek, MD- Charlotte Hall Md.’s David Williams is now two-for-two in early season action at Potomac Speedway. After scoring a late model win back in March, the tracks most prolific winner, scored his first limited late model feature win of the season in last Friday night’s program. In scoring his 33rd career limited late model win at Potomac, Williams became the third different division winner in the three-week old season.

Williams left little doubt he was the man to beat as he snared the race lead on the first lap of the event from his sixth starting spot. Williams would then go on to lead every lap of the event. As Williams Lead, defending track champion Tommy Wagner Jr. and Derrick Quade , had their own personal battle for second that lasted the final sixteen-laps of the feature. As Williams took the checkered flag for his overall 78th career Potomac feature win, Wagner would take second, Quade settled for third, While Dave Adams collected fourth and rookie Tyler Emory completed the top-five.
“This was a tough night for us.” Williams stated. “A mount in the rear broke during the heat race and the guys worked up until feature time to get it fixed. I just cant thank Sommey and Ruth Ann (Lacey) for allowing me to drive their car, it’s a lot of fun to drive such a well-prepared car.” With a big lead during the closing laps of the race, Williams slowed his pace to conserve equipment. “We only have one motor right now and it has a lot of laps on it, so I figured to take it easy the last few laps, because we need this thing to last until the other motor is done.” Quade took the qualifying event win.

Defending street stock champion Kurt Zimmerman made his first start of the season a good one as he took top honors in the division’s sixteen-lap event. Zimmerman, who started fourth, took the lead from Troy Kassiris on the sixth lap and would have to survive a couple late race cautions to score his 17th career Potomac street stock feature win. Kassiris would hang on for second, Stephen Quade was third, Sam Archer took fourth and 12th starting Eric Johnson completed the top-five. Heats went to Archer and Darren Alvey.

In other action, Class rookie Jonathon Raley scored his first-ever feature win in the 15-lap hobby stock main, Ray Bucci annexed the 20-lap strictly stock contest and Greg Gunter scored his second win of the season in the 20-lap four-cylinder event.
