Pepsi Night Victories go to Dustin Boney, Bob King, Jerry Schmidt and Jacob Ebert at Central Missouri Speedway

by Alan Miller
(Warrensburg, MO) – After some light rain and thunderstorms Saturday morning, the warm spring weather made a much needed appearance at Central Missouri Speedway (CMS) on Pepsi and Mother’s Day night at the races.  Fans in the stands were excited after the opening night tight racing action at the ‘Fastest High Banked Clay Oval in the Midwest’ in the four weekly divisions, including the ‘mighty’ modifieds, ULMA late models, street stocks, and b-modifieds.  Saturday evening some returning 2010 modified feature winners added cars to the field when 79 drivers signed in for competition.

Starting the weekly racing action at CMS were the Brooks Automotive B-Mods with three heat races for the 19 cars in the pits.  Early season title contender, Jacob Ebert took the checkered flag in heat one. Bronson Combs grabbed heat two for his first heat win this season. In the final heat, 2010 track champion Brad Smith nipped Ethan Isaacs at the flag and claimed the victory during his first visit to CMS.  After intermission, the b-modified main event started with Combs and Ethan Isaacs up front leading the 15-lap feature.  Isaacs led the event early on with Smith and Ebert fighting for the second spot until the first yellow.  Smith had to leave the track with a body brace hanging off the car and returned at the tail of the field.  Ebert then settled into the lead for the remainder of the race even after several yellow flag re-starts.  Finally, Ebert claimed his second trip into the Waterloo Storage Products Victory Lane with another early season feature win with Isaacs placing second.  Combs finished with a solid third place with an up-and-coming young driver, Cody Brill, for a strong fourth-place just ahead of Lucas Isaacs in fifth and Johnny McGinnis sixth.

The Eickleberry Concrete, Expressways Food Shop, Brooks Automotive Street Stocks placed their machines on the track for three event heat qualifiers.  Jerry Schmidt took heat one over John Brooks with Brian Ziegler taking heat two for his first 2011 heat win.  Devin Irvin claimed the final heat checkered flag. Two heat winners started on the front row for the 15-lap main with Schmidt making a statement early on in the feature with his strong moves on the low-side to the front of the field.  Irvin attempted to make some moves on Schmidt, but he was able to hang on to the lead and gained his first feature trophy at CMS.  Devin Irvin posted a strong runner-up finish with Scotty Dukes coming home with third, Ziegler fourth, Jake Conley fifth and Michael Mullins in sixth.

Next up were the Rod End Supply, Bodee’s Race Bodies, B&D Transmission, All-American Auto ULMA Late Models for two heats.  In the first heat, Bob King, with his new Rocket Chassis machine, garnered the heat one victory along with Lane Ehlert with a solid win in heat two.  Early on in the 20-lap main event, Brett Wood pushed his machine onto the low side into the lead past King. Wood had a problem in turn two with the uke tire and ended with major damage on the front end of the car.  Steve Clancy then moved into the lead on a restart and King took back the lead again until late in the race when Clancy’s car pulled off the track.  Clancy had to head to the pits when all of a sudden Bodenhamer moved up on the high-side to challenge. Ultimately, King held on after several re-starts and made a dazzling run to the checkered flag picking up his first win.  Bodenhamer ran a solid race using the high side to take second, Ehlert moved back into third after a charge from the back of the field after a yellow flag. Jon Binning wound up with a patient run into fourth, Kevin Coyne fifth and Shawn Rayfield in sixth.

The talented field of modified drivers highlighted the Beebe Heating & Cooling, Seeburg Mufflers, Cornerstone Agency, and Dale’s Towing Modifieds with four challenging heats.  The four heat winners gained much deserved checkered flags.  Multiple 2010 feature winner Dustin Boney grabbed heat number one and Jim Moody with the checkered flag flying won heat two.  In a stacked heat three, Tim Karrick won for his first heat at CMS this year as Austin Siebert looked strong in the final heat for the win.  Boney and Moody secured the front row with the highest passing points and led the field to the green flag for the 25-lap main event.  Early on, Boney, Moody and Karrick battled for the top spot until Karrick grabbed the lead on lap four.  After several restarts Boney and Karrick were side-by-side until Karrick looped it around on turn four coming to a stop on the track.  Boney then led the re-start with Moody and Chad Lyle working hard for the second spot.  Mark Dotson then moved with several strong passes into the top three.  After several yellows for various mechanical problems with cars and spins, track officials made the call for a green-white-checkered flag finish to complete the modified feature.  Boney took the feature win as the double checkers flew for his first win at CMS of 2011.  Lyle also finished a very strong in second place with Mark Dotson climbing his way into third.  Moody finished fourth with 2010 track champion, Jason Thompson fifth and a hard-charging Tim Karrick worked his way back up into sixth.
