Adams Wins Exciting Late Model Feature at SSP on Saturday Night

by Todd Fisher
NEWBERRYTOWN, PA (May 14) – On Saturday night, May 14, Ono’s Grant Adams defeated a hard charging Gene Knaub to win the 25-lap Late Model feature at the Susquehanna Speedway Park. Doug Bennett of Chambersburg claimed his third Street Stock feature event of the season. Leesport’s Davey Nester recorded his first Xtreme Stock Car main event of the year. Curt McDade of Carlisle won the the Road Warrior feature. Blaine Leppo of Spring Grove won the non-stop 15-lap Legends Cars feature event.

In Late Model action, Steve Billet, who started fourth, grabbed the lead on the first lap and continued to lead the first ten laps. A caution flag waved on lap 10, bunching up the field behind Billet. This put 11th place started Grant Adams on his rear bumper. On the restart, Adams took the lead away from Billet with Gene Knaub taking over the runner-up spot on the next circuit. For the remainder of the race, Knaub tried several times to take the lead but Adams was perfect as he never made a mistake and took the checkered flag for the victory. Knaub settled for second, followed by Justin Ehrhart and Billet. Jake Lettich turned in a strong run to round out the top five. Bob Minnich, Larry Baer and Knaub were heat race victors.

The 20-lap Street Stock feature began with Brett Pickel leading the first eight laps before Doug Hoffman took over the top spot on lap 9. Bennett never looked back and scored his third win of the season. Pickel finished a strong second place with Scott Thunberg finishing third. Dan Zechman and Jeff Haag rounded out the top five. Pickel and Mat Wampler were heat race winners.

The 20-lap Xtreme Stock Car feature had polesitter Davey Nester leading every lap to claim the feature event. A wild scramble for the runner-up spot had Chad Stine taking second over Mike Zeigler Jr. and J.R. Rodriguez. Adam Smith rounded out the top five. Nester and Johnny Palm were the heat race winners earlier in the night.

The 15-lap Road Warrior feature event saw Daryl Sipe lead laps one and two with Curt McDade taking over the top spot on the third circuit. A spirited battle between McDade and Sipe had Sipe hitting the wall coming out of the turn midway through the race. McDade held on for his first win of the season followed by Sipe in second. Brian Lefebvre finished third with Robert Pyle and Jeff Svendsen rounding out the top five. Robert Pyle was the heat race winner.

In another non-stop 15-lap feature event for the Legends Cars, Lucas Montgomery grabbed the early lead until the second circuit when Blaine Leppo took the top spot away from Montgomery. Leppo continued to lead throughout the race with challenges for the lead from both Scott Gobrecht and Tim Henry. At the finish, Leppo held on for his first victory of the season with Henry taking the runner-up spot. Gobrect finished third with Bill Diehl and Montgomery rounding out the top five. Blaine Leppo and Montgomery each won their qualifying heat races.
