Baer Finds His Way Back to Late Model Victory Lane at SSP on Saturday Night

NEWBERRYTOWN, PA (May 21) – On Saturday night, May 21, Dover’s Larry Baer defeated a hard charging Coleby Frye at the end to win the 25-lap Late Model feature at the Susquehanna Speedway Park. Dan Zechman of Hanover claimed his third Street Stock feature event of the season. Dover’s Matt Wampler recorded his second Xtreme Stock Car main event of the season. Aaron Brommer of Auburn won the PENNMAR Vintage Car feature event.

In Late Model action, Bob Minnich grabbed the early lead from the pole position for the first three circuits. Larry Baer, the 2010 SSP Late Model Track champion, took the top spot on the fourth lap. Steve billet made his way to the runner-up spot on lap six and set his sights on Baer. Meanwhile a wild race was going on behind the top two spots among seven or eight cars. Towards the waning stages of the race, Coleby Frye, who started 14th, took the runner-up spot on lap 22. For the final three laps, Frye tried everything in the book but was unable to make the winning pass as Baer was first to the checkered at the end. Unfortunately, Baer had to be towed to victory lane with a broken driveshaft in the cool down lap. Fyre finished second, followed by Steve Billet, Justin Ehrhart and Tommy Slanker. Baer, Carl Billet and Charles Potts were heat race victors.

The 20-lap Street Stock feature began Jim Palm Jr. leading the first lap and polesitter Matt Wampler taking away the top spot on lap 2. On the eight lap, Wampler spun while leading and retired from the race with mechanical problems. With Palm back in the lead after the restart, Randy Zechman passed him at the midway point of the 2- lap race. Randy’s son Dan,took the runner-up spot from Palm on lap 13. After a late race caution, Dan took the lead from his father and collected his third Street Stock win of the season. Randy Zechman held onto second with Palm, Scott Thunberg and Brett Pickel rounding out the top five. Matt Wampler, Randy Zechman and Dan Zechman were heat race winners.

The 20-lap Xtreme Stock Car feature had exciting wheel-to-wheel action from start to finish with Dover’s Matt Wampler taking the victory over Davey Nester. Adma Smith, Johnny Palm and J.R. Rodriguez rounded out the top five. Wampler and Patrick McClane were the heat race winners earlier in the night.

The 15-lap Road Warrior feature event finish will be announced in the next two weeks.

Auburn’s Aaron Brommer won both his heat and the feature in the PENNMAR Vintage Car class that visits the speedway once a month. Fred Krickbaum was the runner-up with Clark Bartholomew, Larry Felty and Paul Hoffman rounding out the top five.

Before the racing action began, former Susquehanna Speedway track champion, Leroy Felty was interviewed as part of the 57th Anniversary festivities at the track which began racing in 1954.
