Steve Baker, Kevin Bolland, Kyle Lukon, Jonathan Taylor, Jake Simmons, Ricky Steigerwald, and Todd Weldon win at Pittsburgh's PA Motor Speedway
PITTSBURGH, Penn. (May 28) - Fairmont WV's Steve Baker picked up his first win of the season in the Hoosier Tire Mid-Atlantic DIRTcar Super Late Models. Baker led all 25 laps, but it was not an easy win as he had pressure almost all the way from impressive youngster Mike Norris. Garrett Krummert and Baker brought the field down for the start, with Baker grabbing the lead going into the first turn. Krummert was second, but slowed coming out of turn two, which stacked up six cars, including heat winners Tom Beck and Jared Miley, as well as John Mollick, Herman Bertolini, Daryl Charlier and Dave Murdick. Mollick, Charlier and Murdick returned to the race, while Beck, Miley and Bertolini did not. Baker grabbed the lead with Ben Miley in second and Norris in third. The yellow flew again on lap two when Krummert slowed after tagging the back straight wall. Baker again grabbed the lead on the restart with Miley, Norris and Jim Stephans behind. Norris got by Miley on lap 5 and set out after Baker. Norris was behind Baker by lap 10, and began to pressure the WV Rim Rider. Norris made a couple attempts on the inside to get by Baker, but Baker held him off by running his high outside line. Norris kept Baker in sight, as the pair lapped traffic. On lap 20 Norris scraped the wall slightly in turn one, and that allowed Baker to pull away by several car lengths, and it seemed like Baker was home free. However, John Garvin spun the next lap, which gave Norris another shot at Baker on the restart. Baker was up to the task on the restart, and pulled away and led the rest of the event to pick up the win. Norris slowed a bit on the restart, allowing Lynn Geisler to move into second. At the finish it was Baker, Geisler, Norris, Ben Miley, Mike Davis, Mike Johnson, Jason Rider, Jim Stephans, Jim Lepro and Dave Murdick. Mike Johnson picked up the Awesome Signs Hard Charger Award. Tom Beck and Jared Miley took the heat wins. For Baker it was his 99th career feature win.
In the BRP Big Block Modified Special Modisaurus III, New Brighton PA's Kevin Bolland ran a steady and patient race to pick up the big win. For Bolland who started 6th, it was his second career win at PPMS. Kevin Hoffman grabbed the early lead from his 3rd starting spot, with Jeremiah Shingledecker, Dave Murdick, Bolland and Chad Homan trailing. Homan moved to third the next lap, with Hoffman still leading. Homan moved by Shingledecker, then Hoffman for the lead on lap 8. The races first and only yellow occurred on lap 11 when Brad Rapp hit the first turn wall, ending his strong run. Homan still lead on the restart, with Bolland now in second. Bolland made his move on lap 13 and took over the lead. Bolland pulled away after that opening up a straightaway lead. Meanwhile Shingledecker found new life and moved by Homan for second and set after Bolland. The last five laps of the 30 lapper saw Shingledecker close the once huge gap to just a couple car lengths by the last lap, but ran out of time. At the finish it was Bolland, Shingledecker, Homan, Brian Swartzlander, Rex King Sr., Dave Murdick, Mark Flick, Brian Weaver, Chris Haines and Mike Turner. Kevin Bolland, Brian Swartzlander, and Dave Murdick grabbed the three heat wins. Swartzlander set a new track record of 19:377 for the Modifieds in his heat.
The Brougher's Machine Shop Fastrak Pro Late Models saw Burgettstown PA's Kyle Lukon win his second main of the season. Lukon started sixth, and worked methodically thru the field and passed leader Mike Reft on lap 13, to lead the rest of the way. Colton Flinner picked up second with Reft ending up third followed by Mark Moats, Tommy Schirnhofer, point leader Justin Lamb, Dustin Curry, Nico Dabecco, Laura Lukon and Tony White. Kyle Lukon also won his heat with Colton Flinner taking the other win.
McKees Rocks PA's Jake Simmons continued his domination of the Sunoco Race Fuels DIRTcar Cadets, grabbing his third win in a row. Nick Kocuba grabbed the lead at the start, coming from third and led until lap 5, when Simmons took over and won going away in the non-stop affair. Kocuba ended up second followed by Wayne Carbo, Charlie DiLoreto, Craig Koteles, Robert Betz, Pat Weldon, Gary Koteles, A.J. Flick, and Josh Langer. The heats saw A.J. Flick and Wayne Carbo take the victories.
The Miley RV Service UMP Modifieds saw a new winner as Saltsburg PA's Jonathan Taylor take his first ever PPMS win, and second career win. Taylor grabbed the lead from his outside front row starting spot and led the first 8 laps, with pressure first by J.E. Stalder and later Bruce Takach, before being passed by Takach. Takach led lap 9, with Taylor back in front the next lap after a restart, after Vince Laboon slowed after a restart. J. E. Stalder was back in second putting some pressure on right after the yellow until he caused a caution on lap 14. On the restart Taylor held off Takach and went on to win. Tom Martineck was third followed by Jim Plance, Rich Curry, Vince Laboon, Kari Gasser, Clayton Kennedy, Randy Baucknecht, and point leader George Nicola. The two heats saw Chris Basich and Jonathan Taylor take the wins.
Ricky Steigerwald, Robinson Township, PA won a career first win in the Miley BP Car Wash DIRTcar Hobby Stocks. Steigerwald, who started third, battled with Ed Wiser for the first four laps of the race, then held off Adam Chytil the last six laps to pick up the victory. Wiser was third with Ian Tomei, Richard Wilson, Joe Podolinsky, Chase Evans and Hannah Ramsey trailed. Adam Chytil won the heat.
Todd Weldon, Monongahela PA, picked up his second win in a row in the Imperial Heights Garage DIRTcar Young Guns. Weldon started 4th and took the lead from Zack Stehle on lap 5 and led the remaining laps. Stehle was second followed by Bernie Blair Jr. and Logan Crewl.
