Repeat winners highlight Tyler County Race For Angels

MIDDLEBOURNE, W.V. (May 28) - Saturday night Tyler County Speedway featured Race for Angels, honoring drivers, sponsors, track workers and anyone else who had a part in Tyler’s history that are no longer with us.

In the Dodd’s Sporting Goods Late Models Scott Irvin, (Steve Wilmoth won the first heat but was docked two spots for jumping a start) Paul Wilmoth Jr. and Ricky Conley scored the prelims. As the green flag waved P. Wilmoth shot to the point with Irvin, Steve Weigle, Billy Brown and Conley close on his tail. The yellow quickly came out on lap two when Tracie Sampson got around and collecting Tony Musolino, Dannie Ruza and Jamie Watson. Racing resumed but stopped again on lap four when Ruza and Doug Wriston got together in turns one and two. Wilmoth was comfortably in command as Weigle motored to second on lap nine. P. Wilmoth, Weigle, Brown, Steve Wilmoth and Irvin were now the top five as the caution slowed action againn on lap 16 for a slowing Sampson. P. Wilmoth easily put the Midcap Land and Timber / Monroe Excavating B1 in victory circle for the second time this season. Weigle, Brown, S. Wilmoth, and Tyler Carpenter rounded out the top five.

The United Rentals FASTRAK Crate Motor Late Model finale was nothing short of edge of your seat excitement and a bit on controversy. Danny Thomas grabbed the early lead with Derek Doll, Jacob Lash, Kyle Thomas and Joel Prosser occupying the top five slots. K. Thomas brought out the first yellow on lap four with a spin in turn four. D. Thomas still held the point but Doll began to turn up the heat as on lap eight the duo raced door to door. The two continued their duel at the front circuit after circuit. Then on lap 15 they made contact exiting turn four. They became hooked together and drove into the infield. Lash sped by for the lead, Thomas and Doll unhooked as Thomas rolled to a stop on the front chute. Just as the yellow was displayed for Thomas, Doll spun in turn one. Because the yellow was thrown for Thomas, Doll became the new leader. The Cell Accessories / Perkins Supply sponsored #87 would hold off Lash the remaining go rounds to collect his second straight win. Derek Rogers, Prosser, and Dusty Hamrick completed the top five.

In the last two weeks there have been 45 laps of competition in the Bridgeport Equipment & Tool TSMA Modifieds. Mike “Bird” Wilson has lead all 45 circuits. Although a bobble on the first lap of this weeks feature almost halted the streak, he recovered and flew to his second consecutive checkerboard. Matt Holcomb started sixth and raced to second. Brent Trimble chased Bird in the heat and feature but finished third. Tommy Powell crossed in fourth and Del Cunningham drove from eighth to finish fifth.

Brain Probst jumped into Kenny Isner’s #7 and survived the marathon of cautions in the Sigler Fabrication Hot Mods to claim the win. Mike Conkle, Devin Verardi, Cody Eaton and Levi Flesher finished second through fifth. It was the third win for the Mike’s Auto Body / Norris Tire machine. In the finale Curtis Watson slapped the urns three and four guard rail hard as was complaining of leg pain. He was transported to the hospital. At the time of this writing there was no word on his condition.

The Herrington Yoak Ford and Pre Owned Auto Mod Lite had their deal of excitement. Zanesville Ohio’s Tracy Fritter made a rare visit and began to walk away from the field in enroute to an apparent victory. But with four laps to go he slowed in turn four bringing out the yellow. That handed the lead to Zack Watson. Watson held Brandon Fluharty at bay as the two entered turn four with the checkers in hand. Watson broke loose and spun in turn four bringing the caution out. That in turn gave the front spot to Fluharty. The AAA Homes sponsored car would only lead one lap but it was the one that counted. It was Fluharty’s third trip to victory lane. Mitch Ward, Tyler Riggs, Beau Newlon, and Kacy Campbell completed the top five.

Donnie Wamsley grabbed his second checkerboard in the Champion Sport Cards & Trophies Eco Flyer 4 Cylinders. He put the East Gate Used Cars / Barbie’s Day Care across the stripe before David Bunnell, Bill Doll, Kathy Bell and Zack Jones.

Shayla Griffey received her first winner’s trophy in the Outlaw Graphic and Automotive Services MWRA Mini Wedges. In the highly competitive feature Griffey bested Brandon Weigle, Wesley Baker, Trey Watson, and Jackson Jacobs. Georgie Tennett and Baker collected heat wins.

Next week the UFo series lands for a second time for the 13th annual King of the Ring. The race’s history began in 1999 for the Beecher Eaton Memorial where Gary Dalton won the event. The next race was in 2002 and was called the Bill Childers Memorial as Bobby Hill claimed the 2002 and 2003 versions. In 2004 the two races were combined as the Eaton / Childers King of the Ring. Steve Wilmoth was the winner in 2004. Steve Lucas in 2005, Mike Balzano in 2006, Paul Wilmoth Jr. in 2007, Rick Aukland in 2008, Eddie Carrier Jr. in 2009 and Paul Wilmoth Jr is the defending Champion.
