Christine Jr. Visits Late Model Victory Lane at SSP on Saturday Night

Newberrytown, PA (May 28, 2011) – On Saturday night, May 28, Manchester’s Randy Christine Jr. held off a hard-charging Carl Billet near the end to win the 25-lap Late Model feature at the Susquehanna Speedway Park. Randy Zechman of Hanover claimed his first Street Stock feature event of the season. Patrick McClane of York scored his first Xtreme Stock Car feature win of the season. Daryl Sipe of York Haven was victorious in the 10-lap Mini Van feature event. Bill Brown Sr. of Woodbridge, Maryland won the Classic Car feature event.

When Late Model polesitter Bob Minnich elected to start at the rear of the feature due to mechanical issues, Carl Billet began the race from the pole. Billet quickly took the lead on the start and led the first five circuits. On lap 2, the red flag waved when Chris Knopp spun in turn 4 and flipped his racecar without damaging a body part. The car landed on its wheels and was towed back to the pits for a quick check. Knopp was forced to retire from the race when a broken radius rod was discovered, otherwise he would have rejoined the race. Randy Chrsitine Jr., who started third, took the top spot away from Billet on lap 6. As Christine weaved his way through lapped traffic, Billet methodically pursued. Throughout the final five laps, Billet glued himself to Christine’s bumper, awaiting the opportunity to make the winning pass. The opportunity never came and Billet finished in second, less than a car length behind Christine who took the checkers. Coleby Frye started ninth and finished in the third spot. Larry Baer and Justin Ehrhart completed the top five. Randy Christine Jr., Carl Billet and Larry Baer were heat race victors.

The 20-lap Street Stock feature saw four lead changes throughout the race. Polesitter Matt Wampler was the first leader of the race until lap 10 when Doug Benneet grabbed the lead. Contact between Bennett and Wampler resulted in both spinning and going to the rear, giving the lead to Brett Pickel. Pickel held onto the lead for the next two laps until 2010 SSP Street Stock track champion, Randy Zechman moved into the top spot. Zechman never looked back to take his first win of the year. His son, Dan Zechman finished in the runner-up spot with Pickel taking third at the end. Jimmy Slaseman and Scott Thunberg finished fourth and fifth place respectively. Matt Wampler and Dan Zechman were heat race winners.

Matt Wampler grabbed the early lead from outside the front row of the 20-lap Xtreme Stock Car feature race. He led laps one and two. Patrick McClane then led laps three and four. Wampler regained the lead on lap five and led until through the ninth lap. McClane once again took the top spot on lap 10 and led until the end of the race to take his first win of the season. Wampler settled for second with Adam Smith, Chad Stine and Tim Hahn rounding out the top five. Wampler and J.R. Rodriguez were the heat race winners earlier in the night.

The 10-lap Mini Van feature was won by Daryl Sipe followed by a close battle for second with Donny Groff edging out Davey Groff Jr. John Kitner and Jeremy Haines rounded out the top five.

Bill Brown Sr. started on the outside of the front row and wired the field from start to finish to win the 20-lap Classic Car feature event. Matt Wallace was the runner-up with Kurt Welsh, Brandon Little and Charlie Summers rounding out the top five.
