Chad Simpson Benefits from Brothers Misfortune to Claim NCRA Late Model Soup

GREENWOOD, Nebraska (May 29) - Chad Simpson of Mt. Vernon, Iowa took advantage of his brother’s mechanical misfortune with just three laps to go to claim the tenth annual “Alphabet Soup” event as the National Championship Racing Association of Park City, Kansas DIRTcar late model series made their annual Memorial weekend trip to Nebraska Raceway Park’s I-80 Speedway in Greenwood, Nebraska this past Sunday night.

Chris Simpson started on the pole for the 50 lap feature and held off repeated challenges from outside front row starter Kyle Berck and brother, Chad, throughout the event. It looked as though Chris would become the ninth different “Alphabet Soup” feature winner but his hopes went sour as his motor blew with just three laps to go.

The final restart put Chad out front and he would hold off former two-time NCRA champion Berck the final distance to claim the $5000 victory and would etch his name as yet another new winner of this annual event.

Berck, the only repeat winner of this race, settled for second with former two-time series champion Al Purkey coming from his sixteenth starting position to finish third. Travis Dickes finished a strong fourth while Steve Kempt rounding out the top five.

Heat race winners from the 54 car field were won by Denny Eckrich, Gary Christian, Chris Simpson, Chad Simpson, Dickes and Berck. The twin “B” features were won by Brady Smith, who won the previous night at Junction Motor Speedway, and Purkey. Eight different states were represented.

The next event for the NCRA presented by Smiley’s Racing Products DIRTcar late model series will be a huge night for all the fathers out there as the tour heads to the home of the NCRA, 81 Speedway in Park City, Kansas on Father’s Day Sunday night, June 19th.  The tour will be joined by the series modified and sprint car divisions. More information on this huge night of racing will be forthcoming.
