Carolina Clash Super Late Models
June 4, 2011
Dennis Franklin Wins at 311 and Takes over the Points Lead
by Alex Cummings
Dennis Franklin led flag to flag in route to his first Carolina Clash victory of the season at 311 Speedway Saturday night. With the win Dennis Franklin moves into the points lead knocking off the Wisconsin native, Luke Roffers. 31 cars signed in at 311 Speedway marking the best turnout for a super late model race at the "Daytona of Dirt" this season. Six different states were also represented with four new drivers present at their first Carolina Clash race of the season.
"I have to thank my crew and especially my dad for all of their hard work this week getting our car prepared for this race," said Franklin "The Clash is the premier touring super late model series in the south and I really enjoy racing with them and I'll be around with this series for a long time to come."
When the green flag waved over the 24 car starting field, the XS Power Racing Batteries Fastest Qualifier, Johnny Pursley elected the inside line and Dennis Franklin started on the outside pole and took the early lead. Before the first lap could be logged in, Chris Ferguson jumped the cushion in turn 1 and made slight contact with the outside wall but was able to continue. On the restart, it was much of the same with Franklin taking over the lead.
Franklin set a blistering pace to start the race as he began lapping cars by the fifth lap with Johnny Pursley hot on his heels. The first caution appeared on lap 8 when Daniel Baggerly slowed on the track.
On the restart, a massive nine car pileup ensued in turn 4 coming to the green resulting in Jay Sessoms having to leave the track on the wrecker.
The Delaware Double-File restarts kept the fans on their feet especially with Scott Autry, Chad Paxton, Dustin Mitchell, and Travis Yow all making their way through the field running up high against the cushion. All four drivers advanced at least 6 positions with Dustin Mitchell earning the Safety Kleen Hard Charger Award advancing an outstanding 11 positions.
"The track was real racy tonight if you could get on the cushion," said Mitchell "I had a lot of fun tonight and the good run tonight propelled us into 10th place in points."
The next caution flag would fly on lap 20 when Chris Ferguson slowed in turn 3 then on lap 21 when Chris Meadows stopped in turn 4 with heavy front-end damage from contact that took place the lap before.
This would set the stage for a 19 lap dash with Franklin still on the point followed by Pursley and Randy Weaver who was making his first ever Carolina Clash start in his first appearance at 311 Speedway. Franklin would again step out to a two car length lead but the race was on for second as Weaver wore off the back bumper of Pursley car until he made the late race pass.
Weaver then set his eyes on Franklin and caught him with just a hand full of laps to go. Weaver would look high and low but was unable to make a pass.
Dennis Franklin would go on for the victory with Randy Weaver finishing in second. Johnny Pursley would cross the line in the third position. Ross Bailes was in a new ride in the B4 at 311 and made the most finishing fourth. Ronnie Hoover in his second appearance of the season with the Carolina Clash raced his way to a fifth place finish.
With the win, the 2010 Carolina Clash Points Champion Dennis Franklin takes over the Carolina Clash championship points lead by 41 points over Luke Roffers. Kenny Compton Jr. finished the race in the seventh position and moved into the third place in points. Mike Gault dropped to fourth in points with his 10th place finish but is just 3 points behind Compton Jr. The 2009 Carolina Clash Points Champion, Jeff Smith still holds down fifth place in points. Just 9 points separate third from fifth in points and with Fayetteville Motor Speedway coming up June 11th, the points could change again.
Johnny Pursley made a large jump from eight to sixth in points with his third place finish. Scott Autry made the biggest jump from 16th to 12th in points with his sixth place run.
Chad Paxton still leads the Klotz Rookie of the Year Standings by a wide margin over second place Mike Huey. Travis Yow sits just 6 points behind Huey in the Klotz ROY Standings.
The next Carolina Clash event is scheduled for next Saturday, June 11th at Fayetteville Motor Speedway. Be there as the action is heating up and the best drivers in the southeast tackle the three-eighths mile oval for a $4,000 to win race with $2,000 in Contingency awards and prizes to be presented to the drivers.
