Zobrist outguns Salter for Late Model win at Tri City Speedway

Pontoon Beach, IL (June 10th, 2011) A hot afternoon turned into a stormy night but Tri-City Speedway was able to get all but one feature event in before the skies opened up. Some showers early in the program delayed the show about 40 minutes during heat race action. Then thunderstorms kept missing the track just to the north until a major storm rolled in at the track during the Sport Compact feature. The Sport Compact feature was half way completed so it was considered an official finish. The UMP DIRTcar Pro Late Model feature was the only feature that didn’t get in before the rain.

There weren’t a lot of UMP DIRTcar Late Models on hand, but Chad Zobrist and Rick Salter entertained the fans with a great battle for the top spot for the first twenty laps of the main event. Zobrist and Salter fought for the lead lap after lap often side by side and swapping the lead on several occasions. As the laps were winding down, Zobrist would work lapped traffic perfectly and pull away from Salter at the end to get the win. Salter would take second with Nick Lyons finishing third. Jerry Lierly would recover from the lap two incident to finish fourth as did Walker who rounded out the top five. On lap two, Dewayne Kiefer would get sideways in turn two and Chris Streeval would tag him causing both cars to spin which would also collect Claude Walker and Jerry Lierly in the incident. Kiefer and Walker were both able to restart at the rear of the field and Lierly was able to keep going, but the contact ended the night for the Edinburgh, Indiana driver Streeval.

Scott Weber ended his night with two big wins in the UMP DIRTcar Modified division. Weber first claimed the King of the Hill Dash as he outgunned Rusty Griffaw for the $400 payday in the one on one head to head battle. Weber would then come back in the feature event and take a victory away from Tim Hancock in the closing laps. Hancock jumped to the lead on the opening lap of the main event and even though his left front tire went flat on lap one, he dominated the first 3/4 of the feature. As Hancock got into lapped traffic, Weber quickly reeled him in. On lap seventeen, Hancock would choose the low side in turns one and two but would get caught up behind the lapped cars of Larry Hull and Timmy Hancock, Jr. Meanwhile, Weber went to the high side and slipped past Hancock for the top spot. Weber would pull away at the end to take the win. Hancock would get the second spot while Rusty Griffaw and Ray Walsh battled for the third spot. Walsh would spin in turn four as he and Griffaw battled on the final lap, sending Griffaw to a third place finish. Bobby Regot III would come home fourth with Tommie Seets, Jr. rounding out the top five.

The UMP DIRTcar Factory Stock (Street Stock) feature event had its own wild finish. Buddy Love, Tommy Gaither, Randy Tyson, Jr., and Richie Gabriel were locked in a furious battle for the top spot, racing two and three wide as they worked lapped traffic. The action between Love and Tyson featured plenty of contact in the closing laps as they rubbed fenders for several laps as they swapped the lead back and fourth. On the final lap, as they went through turns one and two, Love dove under Tyson for the top spot and made contact again sending Love spinning at the exit of turn two. The huge pack of cars directly behind him took evasive action and Gaither would get collected and get his left rear tire cut off and then sent into the back stretch wall. Love showed his displeasure with Tyson under the caution as he pulled up door to door with him and the two exchanged pleasantries. On the restart, Tyson would be out front and he would go unchallenged for the win. Gabriel would cross the line second with Creg Cannon taking third. Brent Weaver would get fourth and Jason Worley rounded out the top five.

In the Sport Compact feature, Justin Suhre jumped out to the lead at the drop of the green flag, but Jacob Rexing wrestled the lead away from him on lap two. After a caution on lap three reset the field, Earl Pryor moved past Suhre and Rexing for the top spot and proceeded to the lead the next three laps when another caution flew for Tim Holt who stopped in turn four. During this caution period, the heavy rain and dangerous lightning moved in forcing officials to halt the program at that point. Pryor was declared the winner with Rexing taking second, Joey Haun third, Suhre fourth and Travis Horner fifth.
