Steve Clancy Takes ULMA Thriller while Ebert and Ziegler Repeat, Thompson Earns Modified Victory at CMS

By Sam Stoecklin
Warrensburg, MO (June 11) – Another week comes to an end, which means drivers and fans made their way to Central Missouri Speedway for Saturday night dirt-track action presented by Cliff Harris Warrensburg Ford and Warrensburg Chrysler.  At the conclusion of the night’s action there were a few surprises after the official results were released, two repeat winners, and one new winner during KOKO AM 1450 Radio Race Night.

One of the best races in recent memory at the track, or anywhere else for that matter, took place in the 20-lap ULMA late model main event as the drivers gave the fans twenty straight laps of close racing.  Heat race winners Shawn Rayfield and Jason Bodenhamer, who led the field at the start of the late model main with Rayfield leading a four-car run at the front.  It appeared Rayfield might be the man to beat as he and Bodenhamer battled but Brett Wood had other things in mind as he made his way to the front with Steve Clancy close behind.  Wood had the lead after Rayfield lost the top spot with Wood now appearing to be the man to outrun.  The torrid pace and close racing continued on with laps clicking off, the top four raced hard with Clancy eventually making his way to third place.  Clancy grabbed the lead on lap 18 and brought Bodenhamer with him as the leaders threaded their way through lapped traffic.  Clancy buckled down and hung on for his first win of the season with Bodenhamer second and Wood third.  Behind these drivers were Jon Binning, James McMillin and Rayfield inside the top six.  The race was caution free all twenty laps with Clancy taking home an extra $150, which was donated by a fan at the beginning of the night.

Jacob Ebert continued his winning ways with his third straight feature race victory in the b-modifieds and fifth overall win this season.  From the get go, Ebert had things well in control from his outside pole starting position.  Ethan Isaacs had some trouble early on in the event which eventually led to a sixth-place run in the final order.  Three cautions slowed the race but it wasn’t enough to prevent Ebert from taking the win. Nic Bennett posted yet another strong finish by coming away in second position after starting in sixth.  Bobby Russ Wood again looked locked in as he came away with third followed by Lucas Isaacs, Ethan Isaacs and Johnny McGinnis inside the top six.  Heat race winners were Jason Billups and Wood.

For the street stocks it was anyone’s guess for the win as the seventeen cars on hand competed throughout the night.  Brian Ziegler and Jimmy Morris, both two-time feature winners this season heading into the night, started from the pole position in row one after claiming heat race wins.  Devin Irvin also took a heat race victory earlier in the evening and started in fourth.  Prior to the feature event, Jerry Schmidt experienced a fire in his car and was unable to begin the race.  Ziegler shot out to an early lead with Morris battling closely along with Herb Dannar, Irvin and Chad Eickleberry inside the top five.  By lap eight, Ziegler led Irvin and Morris inside the top three until a yellow on lap ten slowed the field.  After the restart it was a great three-car battle for the lead with Ziegler, Morris and Irvin.  Eickleberry and Dannar were close behind.  Michael Mullins was unable to continue during the event after experiencing another week of hard luck on the track.  In the end, Ziegler picked up his third feature win of the year in Waterloo Storage Products victory lane.  Irvin posted his strongest finish of the year in second with Morris third.  A late-race tangle by Dannar and Eickleberry inside the top five allowed Scott Dukes, birthday man Nate Barnes, and T.J. Faulkenberry to advance in the top six as Eickleberry and Dannar finished seventh and tenth after contact.

And then there were the modifieds, in what appeared to be a great race on the track was not to be after post-race technical inspections.  Early night heat race winners were Jim Moody, Curt Rackers, and Tim Karrick.  Aaron Marrant and Moody led the field at the initial drop of the green flag but a hard hit by Clint Long on the back stretch forced a complete restart on the field, Long was uninjured after the spin and was able to continue racing.  Dean Wille had to exit early with mechanical woes while Moody led the opening laps with Marrant, Karrick and Chad Lyle giving chase.  Marrant looked strong up front for a turn at the forefront as caution fell for David Ralph after spinning.  Karrick made his way to second on the ensuing re-start bringing Lyle with him to third just as Jason Thompson began coming forward from his eighth starting position.  A few more cautions fell on the track as by lap 16, Lyle found his way to the front.  Karrick looked to have his best finish of the year going but it was not to be as he was sidelined with major mechanical issues.  With just five laps to go, Lyle looked to be going on to his second straight victory as Moody, and Terry Schultz raced inside the top three.  Lyle crossed the finish line as the leader with Thompson second, Moody third, Schultz fourth and Marrant fifth.  However, after post-race technical inspection, the cars of Lyle, Moody, and Marrant were disqualified from the final finishing order.  The official top six finishers in the race were Thompson who claimed his first feature win of the season with Schultz second, Jason Bodenhamer third, Jake Richards fourth, Tyler Schmidt fifth and ‘Fast’ Richard Layne in sixth.
