Waits holds on for Late Model win at Deer Creek
by Bill Nelson SPRING VALLEY, Minn. (June 18) - Mother Nature tried to stop the racing action in Southern Minnesota again on Saturday night but the crew and racers outdueled her to the checkers tonight. Just before hot laps she slowed the opening ceremonies and also dumped a little shower on the speedway before the Late Model heats but the show was ran in its entirety.
A special thanks to Randy and Patty Eastvold from Hanson Tire in LeRoy who threw an extra $100 to each class tonight. A $50.00 bonus went to the first place driver and a $50.00 bonus to the second place driver.
Nick Beyenhof used a freshly rained on track earlier in the night to take home a heat win. During that heat win Beyenhof turned in a lap of 14.5 seconds which was 4/10th of a second off the Late Model track record which was set by Steve Francis in a WoO Open Motor show. That is how fast the track was after the rain delay in the middle of the program. For the start of the Altenburg Construction WISSOTA Late Model feature event Jordan Yaggy led with Brad Waits in second. Nate Beyenhof sat in third early as the field was three wide early on in the middle of the pack. With six completed Waits sat on Yaggy's bumper waiting for his chance to pounce. Further back Mike Prochnow worked past Beyenhof for the third spot. With eight down Yaggy closed up on the back of the field and started to work the lapped traffic. Yaggy got held up as Waits shot by to steal the lead. Yaggy fired back under Waits to try and retake the lead but Yaggy lost the handle on his mount and brought out the caution. On the restart Waits led with Prochnow in second, Lance Matthees and Nick Herrick worked into the top five and on lap fourteen Matthees was credited with third. On lap sixteen Herrick moved into fourth. Prochnow was shadowing Waits up front and watching the lead duo slice through lapped traffic was worth the price of admission. Both worked through the slower cars trying different lines with Prochnow pulling alongside of Waits a couple times but Waits was able to hold him off and come home with the win. Prochnow came home in a close second ahead of Herrick and Beyenhof.
The Hinz Trucking USRA B-Modified feature event was up first with Erik Kanz jumping to the early lead. Todd Borwege moved into second while the field raced two and three wide for lap one. Shaun Walski took over third on lap fourth behind Josh Smith. Dan Tenold was in fifth with Kylie Kath and Brandon Hare side by side behind him. Hare moved into fifth on lap four as Smith worked past Borwege moved into second. With six completed Hare and Walski raced for fourth with Kath looking to get past them both as a caution flew. On the restart Kanz led, Borwege moved back into second with Kath, Smith and Hare three wide for third. On the next lap Hare took over second as the caution once again flew. This time on the restart Kanz led with Kath, Hare and Borwege three wide for second. Hare took the spot with Kath following through to third on lap eight. With ten completed Borwege and Smith raced for fourth while upfront Kanz was checking out on the field. Late in the race Parker Hale worked into fifth as he worked past Borwege after starting last in the twenty car field. As the checkers flew it was Kanz, Hare, Kath, Smith and Hale in the top five.
Next up was the 331 Bar and Grill WISSOTA Street Stocks with Fast Freddie Prudoehl taking the early lead. Karl Hewitt Jr. Nicholas Schwebach and Danny Hanson were three wide for second. Hanson took over the second spot with Hewitt Jr. in third. Shaun Mann and AJ Zvorak were racing for position behind Schwebach. Three laps into the feature Hanson moved past Prudoehl to take the lead. Zvorak worked past Hewitt JR. and Prudoehl to take over second with four down as the first caution flew. On the restart Hanson led with Zvorak in second. Mann worked into the third spot as another caution flew with six completed. Hanson led on the restart with Mann and Zvorak racing for second, Ryan Henderson sat in fourth ahead of Kory Adams. With eight laps completed Adams and Mike Blowers started to race for the fifth spot, these two would keep racing side by side through most of the rest of the race. Up front Hanson was out to a comfortable lead with Mann and Zvorak racing hard for the second spot. With fifteen down Mann and Zvorak touched with Mann taking over the second spot and following Hanson to the checkers.
In the Dirt Doctor Trucking WISSOTA Midwest Modifieds Dalton Yohnk took off at the drop of the green with Greg Erickson in second. Mike Paulson and Cody Gardner were side by side for third and on lap two they raced past Erickson to make their race for second now. Paulson eventually gained control of the second spot while Gardner had Greg Pfeifer Jr. to contend with. These two raced while Jason Born, Jared Boumeester and Erickson raced for fourth. Paulson slowly started to gain on Yohnk up front but was unable to make a strong enough charge to get up to his bumper. Gardner came home third followed by Pfeifer Jr. and Boumeester. Yohnk took home his first ever feature win at Deer Creek Speedway.
Earlier in the night in the US ARMY WISSOTA Super Stock heat race action. Jeff Brauer took a wild tumble flipping his car and just as his car started to come to rest Kevin Hager rolled his mount in turn three. Hager was able to get his machine fired up for the feature event and joined the rest of the field minus Brauer for the feature event. Chuck Nerland led at the drop of the green with Ryan Siegle in second and Kelly Anderson in third. With two completed Dave Mass challenged Anderson for third. Mass took the spot while up front Siegle attempted to move under Nerland for the lead. Siegle slid up in front of Nerland to try and complete the pass but was unable to clear him, causing Nerland to hit Siegles right rear and send him spinning. On the restart Nerland led with Mass now in second. On lap four Mass took over the lead. Tony Bloom sat in second behind Anderson as Anderson started to work on Nerland for second. Anderson took over second on lap six while Colin Polacek worked into the top five. At the finish it was Mass, Anderson, Nerland, Bloom and Polacek.
The final race of the night was probably the best of the night with two of the best Napa AutoCare USRA Modified drivers battling it out side by side for the win over the last seventeen laps. On the drop of the green Bob Timm and Lucas Schott raced for the lead with Steve Wetzstein in third. Brandon Davis and Brandon Aggen raced for fourth. A caution with six down saw Timm, Wetzstein and Schott three wide for the lead on the restart. Just as the three exited turn the Schott machine shut down bringing out the caution again. On the restart the race for the win started with Timm up high on the cushion and Wetzstein running down low, Davis sat in third while Donlinger made it up to fourth on lap eight after starting fourteenth on the field. With eleven down Timm still held the slight advantage over Wetzstein many laps by a bumper and sometimes a half car as they crossed the line. Davis and Donlinger now raced for third with Davis keeping his momentum working up top. Lap nineteen saw Wetzstein with the lead but Timm retook it at lap twenty. Wetzstein took over on lap twenty one again but Timm got the upper hand on lap twenty four. As the cross the line it was Wetzstein scored with the win ahead of Timm, Davis, Donlinger and Nate Wasmund who charged up to fifth late in the race.
