Burgoon repeats in Super Late Models at Pittsburgh PA Motor Speedway
PITTSBURGH, PA (June 26) - McDonald PA's Brandon Burgoon became the first repeat winner in eight weeks of racing in the Hoosier Tire Mid-Atlantic DIRTcar Super Lates. Newcomer K.C. Burdette and Keith Barbara brought the field down for the green, with Barbara taking the top spot and leading the first lap. Burgoon moved into second on lap 2, coming from 4th and began to battle with Barbara for the top spot. The pair began to battle side by side, swapping the lead a couple times at the line before Burgoon took over for good on lap 10. Barbara slowed on that lap and brought out the yellow. He went to the pits but was able to return. From that point on the race was all Burgoon's, as he led the remaining laps to pick up the win. K.C. Burdette making his first ever PPMS start finished a strong second in the Fast Freddie Carpenter homebuilt machine, followed by defending track champ Mike Johnson, Jon Hodgkiss had a career best finish in the lates finishing fourth, with Steve Baker coming from 9th to finish 5th, followed by Barbara (who recovered from his earlier mechanical problems), Ben Miley, Jim Lepro, Dave Wade and Dave Johnson. Mike Davis, current point leader dropped out on lap 3 with a hole in his radiator. Mike Norris and Steve Baker took the heats.
In the Flight of the Phoenix Sprint Car Special, Pittsburgh PA's Danny Holtgraver continued his domination of PPMS winning his third straight feature at the track in the past two seasons. The tracks all time leading sprint winner, Ed Lynch Jr. started on the pole of the 21 lap event and most probably conceded the race to him, especially since setting a new track record for the sprints of 15:878 in his heat. Lynch took the lead at the drop of the green and opened up some daylight over the rest of the field, while Holtgraver moved into second on lap 3 from his third starting spot. Holtgraver ran Lynch down and battled with him for several laps before he took the lead for good on lap 8. From that point, Holtgraver was gone winning by half a lap and lapping up thru 6th spot. Lynch was second followed by Andy McKisson, Dan Kuriger, Rod George, Pete Miller III, Dan Shelter, Brian Steinman, Ronnie Rough, and Adam Anderson. Ed Lynch Jr. and Andy McKisson took the two heat race wins.
Not to be outdone, cousin Josh Holtgraver, Pittsburgh PA, picked up his first win of the season in the Brougher's Machine Shop Fastrak Crate Late Models. In a wild event that saw a red flag on lap 10 for a wreck on the back straight that eliminated a large portion of the field, saw Nico Dabecco grab the lead at the start. The young Dabecco was having a career race leading the first 10 laps of the event, when the red flag occurred. While track crews were cleaning up the wrecked cars, including three time winner Kyle Lukon, Dabecco pitted with unknown problems and did not return. At this point Holtgraver took over first and held off Colton Flinner to pick up his first win of the season. Newcomer young Ryan Montgomery ran a strong race in his first ever PPMS appearance to finish third followed by Beau Glemba, Rick Meglaye, Jeff Broniszewski, Mike Reft, George Kowatic, Ron Hall, and Tony White. The heats were won by Colton Flinner and Ryan Montgomery.
Morgantown WV's Deana Groves won her first ever PPMS feature event in the Miley RV Service UMP Modifieds. Groves started 8th and worked her way thru the field taking the lead on lap 12 and leading the rest of the way. Evan Taylor was second followed by Chris Basich, Clayton Kennedy, Kari Gasser, Bruce Takach, George Nicola, Kevin Miller, Denny Nakutis, and Tyler Atkinson. Jonathon Taylor and Bruce Takach grabbed the heats.
Imperial PA's Nick Kocuba started fifth and took the lead on lap 3 to win his third feature if the season going away in the Sunoco Race Fuels DIRTcar Cadets. Craig Koteles was second followed by Pat Weldon, Josh Langer, Jesse Gould, Tyler Fox, Mitch Wattelet, Wayne Carbo, Jake Simmons and Gary Koteles. The two heats saw Wayne Carbo and Jake Simmons take the wins.
In the Miley BP Car Wash Hobby Stocks, Oakdale PA's Joe Podolinsky picked up his second win 2011. Podolinsky, who started 6th, beat out Dan Duseheid, Chase Evans, Richard Wilson, Ed Wiser, Karl Kovachs, Hannah Ramsey and Ricky Steigerwald. Dan Duseheid won the heat.
The Imperial Heights Garage DIRTcar Young Guns saw Robinson PA's Zack Stehle win his second feature of the season. In what was the best race of the year Stehle started 4th, but was never able to break away from the field. He was followed closely by Adam Carson, Todd Weldon, Alec Broniszewski, Bernie Blair and Logan Crewl at the finish.
