Herrick Edges Hartung for Win at Deer Creek Speedway
by Bill Nelson SPRING VALLEY, Minn. (July 9) - 110 cars checked into the back gate on a great Saturday evening for racing action at the Deer Creek Speedway. Justin Sass jumped out front in the Altenburg Construction WISSOTA Late Model division with Roger Torgerson in second early on. Kevin Kuehn ran in third as Jack Hartung worked into fourth on lap two. Nick Herrick worked into fifth on lap three with Kyle Jumbeck trying to take that spot away from him. Jumbeck took over fifth on lap six. Hartung and Mike Prochnow worked low on the speedway as most of the front runners ran up high and got the lower groove working to their liking. On lap nine Prochnow moved under Jumbeck for fifth. Torgerson started to reel in Sass up front while Hartung worked under Kuehn for third on lap eleven. On lap twelve Torgerson and Sass were side by side for the lead with Hartung hanging on their rear bumpers. Lap fifteen found Hartung in second and on lap sixteen he took the lead away from Sass. Prochnow and Torgerson were now racing for third as the caution flew. On the restart Hartung led with Torgerson in second. Herrick came back to life and started racing with Prochnow and Sass for third. Prochnow held the spot on then moved under Torgerson for second on lap nineteen. Jumbeck took over fourth on lap twenty one as he moved under Torgerson. Herrick was flying up high and as the white flew he worked past Prochnow for second. Herrick slowed as Hartung shut the door down the back stretch but coming out of turn four Herrick kept the loud pedal to the floor boards and squeezed between Hartung and the wall to beat him to the stripe. How close? Herrick won by 4/1000ths of a second. Hartung, Prochnow, Jumbeck and Doug Herrick rounded out the top five. Doug Herrick started twentieth on the field to work his way to the top five. Heat races were won by Nick Herrick, Sass and Hartung.

On the restart Demmer led with Kath and Jake Timm racing for second. The yellow flew again on lap three with Demmer, Timm and Kath three wide for the lead out of turn two. Timm took over the top spot in turn three with Parker Hale working into second on the restart. With five completed Shaun Walski was coming quickly and started to challenge Brandon Hare for fifth. Two laps later Hare moved into the fourth spot leaving Walski and Demmer to race for the fifth spot. Another caution with nine down bunched the field back up. On this restart Timm led with Hale working him low in second. Hare and Kath raced for third with Walski right there with them. A couple more quick cautions saw Walski racing with Hare for third behind Timm and Kath. Timm continued to hold the edge over the field and took home the checkers followed by Kath, Walski, Hare and Demmer. Heat race action was won by Hare and Kath.
The 331 Bar and Grill WISSOTA Street Stocks saw some great racing with three wide battles for the lead throughout most of the feature. At the drop of the green it was Troy Voth, James Weber and Nicholas Schwebach three wide for the lead out of two. Voth took the lead with Mike Blowers quickly jumping into second as the rest of the field raced side by side on lap two. Blowers raced around the bottom of the speedway as he tried to work past the Voth machine running up high. A brief four wide race for fourth ensued as Blowers was credited with leading lap five. Blowers held the lead on lap six as the caution flew over the field. On the restart Blowers, Voth and Danny Hanson started their three car battle for the lead with Blowers low, Hanson middle and Voth running up high. Blowers led lap nine, Voth lap ten. On lap eleven Hanson and Voth raced for the lead as AJ Zvorak moved up to race Blowers for third. Hanson and Voth were still side by side on lap thirteen with Voth keeping the slight edge, Blowers and Zvorak raced for third with Kory Adams and Fred Prudoehl raced for fifth. Two laps later Blowers rejoined the race for the lead with Voth still holding onto the slight lead. On lap sixteen Voth led the three car battle by a nose, Hanson took over the lead as the white flag flew over the field but Voth powered back by down the back straightaway. Coming out of four Voth's machine slid up slightly allowing Hanson to pull by as the checkers waved. Voth held on for second with Blowers, Zvorak and Prudoehl rounding out the top five. Karl Hewitt Jr. and Danny Hanson won the heat races.
Greg Erickson led lap one of the Dirt Doctor Trucking WISSOTA Midwest Modified Feature event with Greg Pfeifer Jr. and Josh Crary racing for second early on. Jared Boumeester moved into third on lap two and quickly took over the second spot with Cody Gardner following him through into third. With five down Boumeester and Erickson were side by side for the lead at the line. Boumeester took the lead as Erickson now raced with Gardner for second. They rubbed hard going into three with smoke billowing from their tires. Gardner took over the second spot through three and four. The caution flew on lap six and on the restart Boumeester led with Pfeifer Jr. getting a good run into one but got pinched into the wall slowing his progress. With Pfeifer Jr. slowing slightly Rob Arnold moved into the third spot behind Boumeester as Gardner had powered under the leader through one and two. Nine laps completed and Dalton Yohnk and Jason Born raced for fifth behind Pfeifer Jr. The field ran this way to the checkers with Gardner taking home the win. Boumeester, Arnold, Pfeifer JR. and Born rounding out the top five. Pfeifer Jr. and Arnold won the heat races.
Gary Wiersgalla and Chuck Nerland raced for the lead on lap one of the US ARMY WISSOTA Super Stock feature event with a three wide battle for third behind them. On lap two Kelly Anderson stole second spot from Nerland while Wiersgalla led up front. Jeff Brauer sat in fourth but on lap three followed Anderson past Nerland into the third spot. Up front Anderson moved alongside of Wiersgalla at the start of lap four and took over the lead before the caution flew on lap five. On the restart Anderson led with Brauer now moving into second. Josh Anderson, Wiersgalla and Ryan Siegle raced for third. Josh took over third on lap six leaving Wiersgalla and Siegle racing for fourth. Another caution flew on lap seven with Kelly leading on the restart. Brauer in second holding off Josh and Siegle. Brauer started working on Kelly Anderson up front and on lap eleven they raced side by side for the lead. Brauer led lap twelve just as another caution bunched up the field. On the restart Siegle got the jump on Kelly and raced side by side with Brauer for the lead. They stayed side by side through lap sixteen with Brauer holding the slight edge as another caution slowed the field. Brauer held off all remaining challenges from Siegle to take home the win with Kelly Anderson in third, Tony Bloom in fourth after working into the top five late in the race and Brett Dulas in fifth. Heat races were won by Nerland and Kelly Anderson.
The final race of the night was the NAPA AutoCare USRA Modified feature event. Lucas Schott jumped out front on the start with Jason Cummins in second. Tim Donlinger and Keith Foss raced for third while Josh Angst sat inside the top five. Schott pulled out to a good lead with four down running low on the speedway while Cummins ran up against the wall. With six down Donlinger and Foss were still battling it out for third. Outside of the top five there was some wild action as the cars were side by side and swapping lines. A caution with eight down bunched the field back up but Schott was quick on the restart, Donlinger was challenging Cummins for second. Foss sat in fourth as the field was three wide for sixth place. Eleven completed and Cummins held onto second while Foss and Angst raced for fourth. seventeenth starting Wetzstein sat in sixth looking to move into the top five. Seventeen down and Wetzstein worked into fourth and chased Donlinger to the finish. As the checker flew over the action on the night Schott came home with the win by a straight away over Cummins. Donlinger, Wetzstein and Foss rounded out the top five. Heat races were won by Joel Alberts, Doug Hillson, Donlinger and AJ Wiste. A special thanks to the anonymous donor who put up extra money to make it a $1000 to win for the Modifieds.
