Pestka survives late yellow to win feature at Independence Motor Speedway

by Christine Rublack
Independence, Iowa (July 30) – Over 100 cars signed into the pits for some high intensity racing actions at the Independence Motor Speedway.

Luke Pestka took top honors in the IMCA Late Models. Pestka took command early in the event with Rory Metcalf moving into second. The top two began to pull away until a wreck in the back stretch caused the first red of the evening. When racing resumed Pestka took off from the field as Luke Merfeld moved into third. Tysus Pattee found himself in fourth reeling as he began to reel in Merfeld. Pestka and Metcalf sat alone in the top two spots as Jon Passick got a run moving himself into the third position. The field was side-by-side through the middle of the pack as the halfway point was reached. Pestka now had lapped traffic to contend with allowing Metcalf to close in. With 3 to go the yellow waved bunching the field. Pestka now had Metcalf and Merfeld on his bumper. Tyler Bruening had made his way into the top three once racing resumed hugging the bottom groove he now had his eyes set on Pestka. Travis Smock found himself looking at Bruening’s back bumper as he followed him into the third position. Pestka held on for the win, Bruening, Smock, Merfeld and Metcalf followed.

Quinton Miller found his way back to victory lane in the IMCA Hobby Stocks. Shawn Kuennen took command early as Miller landed in second. Nathan Christie seemed to be holding on to third with a hard charging Chris Wiltse in fourth. Miller moved under Kuennen for the top spot prior to the halfway point. A yellow bunched the field up with Miller now having Kuennen and Jamie Whitaker hugging his bumper. When racing resumed Whitaker shot into the second position and eyeing Miller for the top spot. Wiltse had moved into third as the top three began to pull away. Wiltse began to challenge Whitaker for the second position but Whitaker held on. Miller scored the victory, Whitaker, Wiltse and Rod Grother followed.

Adam Johnson took home the trophy in the IMCA Modifieds. Keith Pittman took control of the top spot early in the event with the field going three and four wide behind him. Ed Thomas moved into second but not for long as he challenged Pittman for the lead. Thomas took over the lead as Jeff Kriz moved into third. Johnson was now in fourth. Johnson hugged the bottom and in just a couple laps found himself into the lead. Johnson began to pull away as the field was three wide for third. Shawn Ryan and Jerry King were side-by-side for third and fourth as the time limit was approached. Mike Burbridge found himself using the high line and into second reeling in Johnson. With just a few laps remaining the time limit shortened the event with Johnson taking the win, Burbridge, King and Ryan followed.

It seems as the Johnson family has victory lane dialed in as Sean Johnson also scored the win in the IMCA Stock Cars. Tim Helle and Mike Padden battled for the top spot just laps into the event but it was a three car battle for third between, Johnson, Austin Evens and Roger Clesielski. Johnson hugging the bottom he moved into the lead as Justin Temeyer who started towards the middle of the pack made his way into fourth. Temeyer used the high line and found himself into second by the halfway point. Johnson had increased his lead as Clesielski now found himself in second as Temeyer spun and fell to the rear of the field. Kirk Fauser had moved into third with Dave Stricker closing in. Johnson held on for the win, Clesielski, Fauser and Stricker followed.

Ray Lundry brought home the trophy in the IMCA SportMods. From the start the field began to go side-by-side as Danny Dvorak took to the front. Matt McCahen moved into second as Lundry followed in third. Lundry had moved into second as he and Dvorak began to extend from the field. Lucas Lundry had made his way into third over McChane. Ray seemed to be hooked by the halfway point he had worked under Dvorak and into the lead. Dave Schulze had found himself in fourth as a yellow bunched the field. Tyler Droste and Josh Sherbon began to make an appearance into the top five as the laps began to wind down. Droste hugged the bottom line as he worked passed Dvorak and into second. Ray held off a hard charging Droste and Dvorak for the win. Droste, Dvorak and Sherbon followed.
