Williams gets first win of season in Late Models at Virginia Motor Speedway; Arnold, Childress and Bowler also visit victory lane

Jamaica, VA – With a three wide pass out of turn 4 on lap 28 David Williams of Clements, MD took over the top spot then was able to hold off several late race challenges to take the checkers for his first win of the season in the Victory Lap Late Model 35 lap feature at Bill Sawyer’s Virginia Motor Speedway on Pepsi / WXGM Night at the Races.

Scott Adams led the first 28 laps and while in traffic Williams made a bold move to the outside to make it three wide coming to the line to take over the top spot with the fans on their feet.

“Lapped traffic helped me tonight, the track was really fast and when Scott (Adams) came up on the slower traffic the outside opened up and I just shoved it in there and hoped it would stick,” commented Williams in victory lane.

“It feels great to finally get that win here this year, the team has worked so hard and they deserve it,” added Williams.

Davis Lipscombe and Adams led the field to green with Adams taking the lead with a strong move from the outside. Adams looked like he was going to run away and hide but once in lapped traffic Lipscombe and Williams began to close in on Adams for the lead.

On lap 27 Williams got by Lipscombe for second and went after Adams for the lead. On the next lap Adams and Williams began to get into lapped traffic and in turn 4 the door opened to the outside and Williams muscled his way to the outside to make it three wide at the line and take over the lead.

The caution would come out for the second and final time on lap 31 when Adams sun in turn 4. On the restart Williams was able to fend off Lipscombe and went on to record his first win of 2011 in the Victory Lap Late Model division.

Rounding out the top five were Davis Lipscombe, Kenny Moreland, Billy Tucker and Matt Marshall.

In other action Dan Arnold of Petersburg, Va picked up his second win of the season in the Budweiser Modifieds. In the Truckin Thunder Sportsman Stephen Childress of St. Stephens Church, VA got his third win of the season and in the Collision One Limited Stock Car division David Bowler of Gloucester, VA picked up his career first victory.

In the Budweiser Modified 25 lap feature Joey Polevoy and Brian Maxey led the field to green with Polevoy jumping to the lead. Caution would fly before the first lap could be completed for Maxey who came to a stop in turn 3 with a flat tire.

A complete restart saw Dan Arnold moved up to the front row and on the drop of the green flag rocketed to the lead.

Arnold began to pull away from Polevoy and Bret Hamilton as they battled for second. Hamilton would get by Polevoy on lap 14 with an outside pass out of turn 4. Hamilton would tangle with lapped traffic two laps later and give the spot back to Polevoy.

Caution would come out on lap 18 for Aaron Harris who came to a stop with front end damage in turn 4. On the restart Hamilton retook the second spot. The car on the move was Maxey who had worked his way back to sixth. Over the next three laps Maxey worked his way to third with great moves out of turn 2 each time.

The races third and last caution came out on lap 22 bunching the field back on Arnold’s bumper for the restart. On the restart Arnold pulled away as Hamilton battled with Maxey for second. Arnold would go on to take his second win of the season and extend his point lead over Maxey in the chase for the championship. Rounding out the top five were Brett Hamilton, Brian Maxey, Page Harrison and Wayne Barricks.

In the Truckin Thunder Sportsman 25 lap feature Stephen Childress and Junior Carter led the field to green with Childress leading the first lap. Following closely were Todd Traylor, Tony Wood and Roger Jamerson.

The races first caution came out on lap 6 when Wood ran into the back of Traylor on the backstretch locking the two cars together. They were able to get apart but Wood’s bumper ended up on the track bringing out the caution.

On the restart Childress maintained his lead over the field. on lap 8 Traylor began pressuring Cater for second and on lap 9 took the spot with a inside pass out of turn 4.

The action in the top five was intense with Traylor trying several times for the lead. On lap 21 J.R. Guy began to work his way to fourth with passes on Wood and Jamerson.

With one to go Childress had Traylor all over his rear bumper pressuring him for the lead. Childress woull pick up the win with Traylor pushing him across the finish line in second. Rounding out the top five were Junior Carter, J.R. Guy and Roger Jamerson.

In the Collision One Limited Stock Car 20 lap feature Brandon Sandridge and David Bowler would lead the field to green with Sandridge taking the point. On lap 2 the battle for the lead went three wide with Sandridge, Bowler and Ryan Toole. Bowler would emerge with the lead at the line followed closely by Sandridge and Toole. In fact the top seven cars were all in position to take over the top spot.

On several occasions Bowler would fend off challenges several times rubbing sheet metal in the process. On lap 18 Toole looked inside Bowler as they exited turn 4; the two raced side by side to turn 2 where they touched allowing Bowler to regain the lead. In turn 4 Toole would bring out the races final caution with a spin setting up a green, white, checkered finish.

On the restart held off Sandridge and went on to record his career first victory. Rounding out the top five were Brandon Sandridge, James Givens, Brett Adkins and Joe Ender. Results are unofficial until further inspection.
