Layfield, Duncan, Dickerson, Aronhalt, Gibbs and Adkins winners at WCS

Orrville, Ohio (August 27) - Exciting racing was the theme of the night for The Dzugan Fire and Rescue kids night. The packed grandstands were treated to great door handle to door handle dirt slinging action in all divisions. The pits were nearly overflowed with 111 cars signing in.

In the 410 Winged Sprints it was Medina, Ohio’s Andrew Palker and Shawn Hubler who lead the field to at the drop of the green flag. Palker who won last week’s feature jumped out front of the field, he was being chased by Hubler, Chris Myers and Wes McGlumphy. It was clear early cars were passing through the field as 9th starting Andre Layfield and 19th starting Kenny Jacobs were moving forward at a blistering pace. Layfield used the highside around the track to pass Jason Dolick and Myers then set his eyes on Palker. Before the lap was completed a caution would fly thus negating the two positions that Layfield made. At the drop of the green Palker again jumped out front but Layfield didn’t waste any time as he powered past Dolick and Myers. As Layfield caught Palker he again used the high side and flew past Palker to take the lead. Palker climbed up on the wheel did not give up and came back and passed Layfield setting up this epic battle for the lead. Layfield pitched in turn three hard under Palker making the pass, but again Palker didn’t give up he sliced back under Layfield as they came of turn four and dragged raced down the front stretch. It looked like Palker would make that pass on the inside but Layfield hammered down up against the guard rail and then rode the cushion to complete the pass and put a little distance on Palker. The red flag flew for Duffy Smith who flipped in turn 3 on lap nine, Smith was ok but his car was not able to continue. Kenny Jacobs who was running in the top ten would also retire with flat tire. The racing would resume with Layfield on the point. He was being chased by Palker, Myers, 8th starting Broc Martin and Danny Mumaw. Martin making a late race push was able to slip past Myers for third. At the checkered it was Layfield winning his second feature at WCS this season. He was followed by Palker, Martin, Myers and Mumaw. Winning heat races were Palker, Myers and Martin.

In the Super Late Model division it was J.R. Gentry and Weston Hutchinson who lead the field down to the green flag. The green was not displayed very long as a caution flew for Hutchinson and Dave Hornikel who crashed in turn one. When the racing resumed Gentry jumped to the lead ahead of David Liles, 10th starting Mark Gardiner who shot the middle splitting several race cars to power up to third and Ryan Markham. On lap three Liles who was putting heavy pressure on Gentry passed him. Gentry fought back and regained the lead on lap four. Gentry still out front but he was chased by Liles, Markham, 14th starting Charlie Duncan, 9th starting George Lee and 15th starting Rick Bond. Lap six Gentry found the fast way around the track riding the cushion he had the left front cranked up in the air flying around the track. Markham kept plugging away moved into second and looked under and passed Gentry for the lead, Gentry again not giving up battled back to regain the lead. On lap eight the caution came out for Markham who had mechanical issues, also collected Duncan. Markham’s night was finished but Duncan was able to continue restarting on the tail of the field. Gentry again powered to the lead but as he raced down the back straightaway sparks flew from under his racecar. With the handling going away Bond closed the gap on Gentry. On lap ten Bond completed the pass on Gentry and pulled away from the field. Eyes were on Duncan who passed Aber and Larry Bellman and was quickly closing on Skip Watterman. Duncan methodically dispatched Watterman and Gentry who was still working the high side around the track. Duncan then set his sights on Bond who held a commanding lead. Bonds lead started shrinking as Duncan closed on the leader. On lap twenty with the crowd on its feet Duncan passed Bond by a nose at the finish line and held the lead from there. The checkers fell it was Duncan coming home victorious for his first at WCS this season. Following Duncan were Bond, Gentry, 17th starting Watterman, Aber and Bellman. Heat race winners were Lee, Hutchinson and Gentry.

In the Tri-State Modifieds Norm Aronhalt and Mark Gardiner who lead the field to the green flag. Aronhalt motored to the lead but he was being chased closely by Nick Smith, Larry Kugel, Sid Danals, Jimmy Smith and Gardiner. On lap 6 the caution flew as Danals, J.Smith got together in turn 3 both drivers unable to continue. Just prior to contact they were running three wide with Gardiner also on the outside. At the drop of the green flag Aronhalt took the lead but the racing through the field was tight as Smith and Kugel would battle side by side. Kugel and N. Smith traded positions for several laps. On 15 Kugel had mechanical difficulties thus finishing his night. N. Smith tried to close on Aronhalt but came up short. At the checkers it was Aronhalt taking his first feature ever at WCS, he was followed by N. Smith, 11th starting Rory Reed, Jeff Votaw, Justin Morey and Jason Morey. Winning heat races were Danals and Kugel.

In the Thrifty Discount Muffler Pure Stock division Jeremy Dickerson and Roger Drouhard lead the field to the green flag. Dickerson jumped out to the point ahead of Drouhard, Ed Leasure, Steve White and Dave Moreland. A tight battle ensued at the front of the between Dickerson and Leasure with Leasure taking the lead on lap seven. Dickerson not giving up fought back under Leasure as the laps clicked by. On lap nine and ten both Leasure and Dickerson were neck and neck. Leasure gained a slight advantage over Dickerson. Leasure held the lead until the final turn on the last lap when Dickerson slipped passed him to take the checkers. Dickerson was followed by Leasure, Dave Haven Jr., 16th starting Josh Miller and Drouhard. Heat race winners were Tory Gibbs, Moreland and Leasure. Josh Miller won the B-Main.

In the Mini Stock division Jerry Adkins jumped out to the early lead ahead of Doug Hensel, Brad Hensel and Chase Alexander. An early caution flew and on the re-start Alexander got a great jump moving under both Hensel boys to take second place. Adkins pulled away from the field to take the checkered flag. Following Adkins were Brad Hensel, Alexander, Doug Hensel and Tyler Rose.

In the Mini Stock Make up feature from July 31st. On the opening lap the caution flew for pile up involving Michael Workman, Tyler Wiles, Brody Horner and Doug Hensel. When racing resumed Jerry Adkins took the lead. Jordan James, Chase Alexander and Brad Hensel chased down the leader. On lap 2 James spun into the infield ending his night. The caution again flew for Alexander who made contact with the guardrail then went over the hill coming off of turn two. When the green flag dropped it was Adkins pulling ahead of the field. At the drop of the checkered flag it was Adkins taking the win. He was followed by Brad Hensel, Tim Cecil, Sam Huffman and Ben Hershberger.

In the Thrifty Discount Muffler Pure Stock make up from July 31st Tory Gibbs jumped out to the early lead ahead of Ed Leasure, Josh Miller and Brandon Craver. By lap 10 Gibbs who was setting a blistering pace was dealing with lapped traffic. The running order remained Gibbs out front ahead of Leasure, Miller, Lynch, Craver and John Frame. As the race wound down Leasure closed on the bumper of Gibbs trying to pass. Leasure looked high but couldn’t complete the pass. At the checkered flag it was Gibbs for his first win this season at WCS. He was followed by Leasure, Miller, Lynch and Craver.
