Brede holds off Becker for Wissota Late Model victory at Casino Speedway
by Tony Steuck WATERTOWN, S.D. (September 3) - Scott Ward rebounded from a blown motor in hot laps to dominate the Advantage RV Modified Tour main event and collect $1,500 during the JDRF Fall Shootout at Casino Speedway on Saturday night. Ward missed his heat race with engine woes, but swapped his power plant and won the B-feature from the final starting spot. He took only 10 laps to climb from 13th to first then drove away for the victory on night one of the double header.
In other AMSOIL Dirt Track Series action, Seth Brede held off Chad Becker to collect the WISSOTA Late Model victory, Steven Grabow led every lap for his first career Street Stock triumph and Rich Pavlicek made the tow from Casselton, ND to win the Midwest Modified feature. Brandon Buysse topped the MiniaKota Micro Sprint feature and Scott Harrington and Kevin Block won the cruiser feature on Saturday night as well.
Curt Gelling started on the pole of the 20 car, 20 lap WISSOTA Late Model main event, but Scott Ward and Seth Brede split the pole sitter in turn two and raced side by side for the lead on lap one. Brede led the first lap by a nose with Gelling third and Dave McDonald fourth. Ward hounded Brede and edged into the lead on lap five, but Brede fought back to regain the top spot on lap six. The first caution flag of the event waved with seven laps complete after Chad Chenoweth spun in turn one.
Brede found some breathing room after the restart while Ward and Gelling raced side by side for second and Chad Becker climbed into fourth. Gelling secured second on lap ten and Becker ousted Ward for the third spot on lap 14. Brede had opened a half straightaway lead by lap 15, when the final caution flag waved after Dustin Beebe and John Kaiser tangled in turn two.
Becker and Gelling fought for second after the restart; they raced door to door until Gelling jumped the cushion with two laps to go and allowed Becker to make a bid for the lead. Becker used the low groove and pulled alongside the leader in the turns, but Brede ran the cushion to perfection and kept his momentum to score his second victory of the season by a narrow margin over Becker. Gelling finished a close third with Kent Arment fourth and Ward fifth.
Gelling, Becker and Arment were the Late Model heat race winners.
Scott Hansen and Kent Arment paced the 20 car WISSOTA Modified field to the start of the 40 lap Advantage RV Tour main event. Hansen grabbed the lead on the opening lap while Andy Gordon moved into second from the fourth starting spot and Arment slipped to third. The top three cars went three wide on the second lap, but Hansen remained in control and Arment moved to second. The first caution flag dropped with only two laps complete after Duane Zabel and Jordan Foster sat sideways on the speedway in turn one. Zabel retired from the event.
Gordon used the middle groove after the restart and powered around Hansen to lead lap three. Rich Pavlicek challenged Arment for third while fifth row starters Ryan Canon and Mike Stearns advanced into contention. Gordons reign at the point ended on lap five when he pulled up lame and slowed to a stop on the high side of the speedway. The yellow flag waved and Gordon was able to re-fire and join the rear of the field. Matt Gilbertson, Brent Dutenhoffer and David Orr tangled out of turn four after the restart, but all were able to continue after the yellow flag.
Hansen led while Arment ran second and Canon and Stearns dueled for third. Ward made his first appearance in the top five on lap six then picked off Canon on lap eight to take fourth. He hugged the inside of the speedway and made a three wide move under Hansen and Arment to lead the field with 10 laps complete. Ward pulled ahead to a straightaway lead five laps later and caught the tail of the field by lap 20. Hansen remained in second while Arment dealt with Stearns in third and Canon raced fifth.
Stearns and Arment were all over Hansen before Stearns slipped by on lap 23. Arment went to the high side and grabbed third from Hansen on lap 26. Canon attempted to follow suite and went around on lap 27, but Hansen fought back into the spot two laps later. The two raced side by side for fourth while Ward had stretched his lead to half of a track over Stearns by lap 30.
Canon fell off the pace on lap 34 and exited the speedway which moved Nate Heinrich into the top five. Behind him, Todd Stark, Jordan Foster, Curt Gelling and Gordon raced two and three wide for spots seven through ten.
Ward lapped up to the top ten by the time he crossed the checkered flag and grabbed the $1,500 top prize. Stearns, Arment, Hansen and Heinrich earned top five finishes. Pavlicek, Foster, Stark, Gordon and Gelling rounded out the top ten.
Pavlicek, Stearns, Canon and Stark won the Modified heat races. Ward and Heinrich were victorious in the consolation races.
Tyler Lamb took the lead out of turn two in the 20 lap WISSOTA Street Stock feature, but pushed across the track in turn four and fell to third. Steven Grabow, who started on the outside of row one, nipped Chris Serr to lead the first lap and while they raced on the second lap, Serr looped his machine in turn four and brought out the yellow flag.
Grabow remained at the point after the race resumed with Adam Butterfield second and Al Schmidt into third. Tyler Lambert advanced to challenge Schmidt for third while Schmidt looked for a way around Butterfield. Grabow opened a comfortable margin, but the yellow dropped again with eight laps complete after Zach LaQua spun in turn four.
The pack mixed it up for second after the restart and Lambert emerged from the four car battle into the runner up spot. He put the pressure on Grabow on lap 13 while Lance Haskell, who started ninth, raced into third by lap 16. Lambert stuck his nose under Grabow on the final lap, but the first year driver fended off the threat and grabbed his first career victory. Lambert, Haskell, Butterfield and Schmidt followed Grabow to the checkered flag.
Scott Borstad and Serr topped the Street Stock heat races.
Six caution flags in the first four laps plagued the WISSOTA Midwest Modified feature and eliminated a substantial portion of the field. Kenneth Mayer paced the field for the first four laps, but spun to bring out the final caution. Rich Pavlicek started eighth and was into third by lap three, then took the lead when Mayer spun. He led the rest of the way for his first victory at the speedway. Lorin Johnson followed Pavlicek through the field, but could never mount a serious threat and finished second. Tony Croninger raced from 11th to finish third, Scott Hinricher rallied from 21st to finish fourth and Les Schoon rounded out the top five.
Midwest Modified heat wins went to Johnson, Pavlicek and Landon Krause.
Brandon Buysse led all the way to win the MiniaKota Micro Sprint main event. He was challenged early in the race by Tim Ottenbacher, who settled for second. Kris Wilke, Shane Fick and Ryan Schuur finished in the top five positions.
Scott Harrington and Kevin Block topped the cruiser main event ahead of Bradley Rossow, Alyssa Anderson, Sheldon Foster and Caleb McGuire.
