Lunger wins career first Super Late main at PPMSPITTSBURGH, Penn. (September 10) - In the Hoosier Tire Mid-Atlantic DIRTcar Super Late Models, Dennis Lunger, Albion, PA made a surprise appearance and picked up his first ever career Super Late Model win and first ever PPMS win and became the 95th different Late Model winner. Defending track champ Mike Johnson grabbed the lead at the start from his outside pole starting spot. Johnson was looking for his first win but Lunger had different ideas. Lunger moved into second on lap 2 and made his move on Johnson on lap 11 and pulled away to a straightaway win. The battle for second was sensational with Johnson just beating Lynn Geisler and Brandon Burgoon. Jim Lepro was fifth followed by Mike Davis (the 2011 track champ), Alex Ferree, Daryl Charlier, Kari Gasser, and Kyle Lukon. The two heats for the 20 cars on hand saw Jason Rider and Lynn Geisler pick up wins. Jon Hodgkiss hit the wall hard in the first heat totaling the #69. Jim Stephans lost a motor in his heat. Mike Basich also did not start the Main, after problems in his heat. Lunger became the 4th different "new" winner to the PPMS record books this season.
The Brougher's Machine Shop Fastrak Crate Lates Special had Kyle Lukon Burgettstown PA pick up his 5th win and a cool $700 to win in a great race. Steve Beatty grabbed the lead at the outset, but was replaced before the first lap was over by Mike Pegher Jr. Pegher looked as if he was on cruise control opening up a huge lead. Lukon bided his time getting into third by lap three and battled back and forth with Steve Beatty and Josh Holtgraver. Lukon moved into second on lap 13, and his break came with a caution on lap 13, which eliminated Pegher's large lead. Lukon chased Pegher for a few laps then made his move with a slide job in three and four on lap16. Pegher kept the heat on but Lukon held him off. At the finish it was Lukon, Pegher, Beatty, Holtgraver, Justin Lamb, Pete Rech (in the Reft #9), Beau Glemba, Laura Lukon in a solid 8th, Mark Moats Sr. (subbing for Jr.), and Scott Schempp. Josh Holtgraver and Justin Lamb won the heats. Colton Flinner is the 2011 point champ.
The Sunoco Race Fuels DIRTcar Cadet Thunder 25 had McKees Rocks PA's Jake Simmons win his 11th win of year and the 2011 track championship. Simmons started 5th and played a waiting game while Nick Kocuba and Wayne Carbo battled for first for 16 laps. Carbo took over on lap 17, and Simmons moved into second on lap 18. Simmons made his move on lap 23 getting by Carbo, while Carbo kept the pressure on thru the checker. At the line it was Simmons, Carbo, Kocuba, Pat Weldon, Josh Langer, Jesse Gould, Brad Koteles, Brad Westover, Dave McManus and Gary Koteles. Nick Kocuba and Wayne Carbo grabbed the heat victories.
The Miley Truck Rental UMP E-Mods saw an excited Clayton Kennedy, Mars PA pick up his second win of the season. A wild crash on the first lap of the E-Mod feature saw J.E. Stalder spin and collect Evan Taylor, Jonathan Taylor, Bruce Dreistadt and Tom Martineck, with Stalder ending up on his roof. Only Evan Taylor returned for the restart, and Jonathan Taylor returned two down. Mike Davis in J.E. Stalder's new backup machine led the first 13 laps, but began to slow allowing Kennedy to grab the lead on lap 14. Davis dropped out after that, while Kennedy defeated Carl McKinney, Bruce Takach, Kevin Miller, Evan Taylor, George Nicola, Davis, Jonathan Taylor, Tom Martineck and J.E. Stalder. Jonathan Taylor and Carl McKinney won the heat races. Bruce Takach is the 2011 PPMS point champ. Kennedy's win came on his parent's 28th anniversary.
The Miley BP Car Wash DIRTcar Hobby Stocks, Brain Huchko McDonald PA (in the Ed Wiser #OU2) picked up his second win of the season. Joe Podolinsky and Ricky Steigerwald swapped the lead three times before Podolinsky looked like he grabbed the lead for good after a restart, but on lap 9 Podolinsky developed a flat and went to the pits. Huchko grabbed the lead at this point and defeated Ian Tomei, Rick Steigerwald, Chase Evans, Joe Podolinsky, Richard Wilson and Steve Hoschar at the flag. Brian Huchko won the heat, while Ricky Steigerwald picked up the 2011 track championship.
The Imperial Heights Garage DIRTcar Young Guns had Bernie Blair Jr. Pittsburgh PA win his sixth feature of the season. Adam Carson looked as if he was headed to his second feature of the season but lost a wheel on the last lap giving the lead to Zach Stehle. He was passed on the last lap restart by Blair. Blair was followed by Pete Block, Todd Weldon, Stehle, Courtney Chaimberlain and Carson. Todd Weldon is the 2011 track champion.
In the Wacky Wheels Figure 8, Joe Podolinsky, Oakdale PA continued his winning ways in the class by winning his second feature of the season, over Car 24, Charles Davis, Sam McGervey, and Ian Tomei.
