Smith, Conley, Wisecarver and Patterson winners at Wayne County Speedway by Ryan Pearson
Orrville, Ohio (September 9) Mother nature was a race fan Friday night as WCS officials squeezed in a night of exciting racing under threatening skies.
In the Super Late Model George Lee and Charlie Duncan led the field to the green flag. Duncan jumped out to the early lead. Chasing Duncan down were Lee, Ryan Markham and Norm Aronhalt. On lap eight Markham was pressuring Duncan for the lead and Lee slipped past Aronhalt. On lap thirteen Markham blitz passed Duncan to take the lead, Corey Conley was running third and Lee fourth. On lap eighteen, bad luck struck Markham as he spun out while leading. Handing the lead back to Duncan; his lead was short lived as on lap twenty Conley dipped under Duncan to take first place. Duncan pressed as hard as he could but was unable to make a late race pass. When the checkered flag flew it was Conley the winner. Rounding out the top five were Duncan, Lee, Weston Hutchinson and Aronhalt. Winning heat races were Lee and Markham.
Danny Smith and Mitch Harble started on the front row of the feature for the 410 Winged Sprints. When the green flag dropped Smith jumped out ahead of Harble, Bryce Dickson, Chris Myers, Sam Hafertepe Jr and Andrew Palker to take the lead. As Smith stretched his lead the caution flag flew for Brandon Spithaler who had mechanical difficulties. As the race restarted tight racing ensued through the field as Danny Mumaw cut under Myers to take fourth place and seventh starting Hafertepe Jr. worked his way around Harble for second place. On lap eight Smith stretched his lead over Hafertepe Jr. but began to get into lapped traffic. On lap eight the yellow flag again flew this time for Dickson who spun as he ran in the top five. This bunched the field erasing the lead Smith held over Hafertepe Jr. When the racing resumed Myers looked like he was shoot from a cannon. Myers whipped around the high side to pass Mumaw for third and began pressuring Hafertepe Jr. for second. Not a lap later Myers used the high side again to blast pass Hafertepe Jr. to overtake the Sunnyvale Texas racer for second. Myers closed the gap on Smith. On lap seventeen Myers slowed and came to rest on the track as his night was finished with mechanical troubles. Smith still led over Hafertepe Jr., Mumaw and Chaney. On lap twenty Hafertepe Jr. began searching around on track trying high side but Smith stretched his lead. Lap twenty one click off with Hafertepe Jr. who closed the gap on the leader as Smith approached lapped traffic. On lap twenty three Chaney flew around Mumaw up against the guardrail for third place. The white flag flew with Smith hold a very slim advantage over Hafertepe Jr. and Chaney. As the sprint cars crossed the finish line it was Smith winning over seventh starting Hafertepe Jr., eighth starting Chaney, ninth starting Mumaw and Palker. Winning heat races were Harble, Chaney and Andre Layfield.
In the Thrifty Discount Muffler Pure Stocks Jeremy Dickerson jumped out ahead of the field to take the early lead. Dickerson opened an early lead over Chad Craver, Paul Whitten, Shaun Cains and Justin Patterson. Craver began searching for the quick way around the track and was looking low under Dickerson trying to close on the leader. Seventh starting Patterson began setting them up and putting them down as he chased down the Dickerson. Patterson passed Craver and closed the sizable lead that Dickerson held. With the white flag in hand Dickerson held a half car length advantage over Patterson. Several people stood in excitement on the final lap. Patterson turned hard left under Dickerson to make the pass on the final lap. He was followed across the finish line by Dickerson, Craver, Whitten and Cains. Patterson and Cains were your heat race winners.
In the Tri-State Modifieds it was Jesse Wisecarver and Jess Hartman who led the field down to the green flag. At the drop of the green flag Wisecarver jumped out to a narrow advantage over Hartman, Kevin Morehouse, Matt Holcomb, Mark Dickson and Jack Young. The racing at the front of the pack was tight as Wisecarver still held a half car length lead over Morehouse and Hartman. A caution flag flew and it allowed Wisecarver a single file restart over Morehouse, Hartman and Dickson. Wisecarver smashed the loud peddle and he held the lead. Morehouse closed right on the bumper of Wisecarver and began applying heavy pressure. Wisecarver kept his cool as Morehouse was still plastered to his bumper.
